Bear Grylls, a well-known adventurer, traveler, and explorer, gained worldwide fame for his hit reality show, ‘Man vs. Wild’. His love for adventure sports like mountaineering, sailing, and skydiving was evident from a very young age, and his father, who was associated with the ‘Royal Yacht Squadron’, played a vital role in training him for these activities. At an early age, Bear even obtained a black belt in Shotokan karate and became a cub scout at the age of eight.
Bear Grylls’ adventures were never without risks, and they demanded tremendous physical and mental strength. He has faced numerous injuries during his expeditions and even suffered a severe back injury. However, Bear’s passion for adventure was undeterred, and he overcame his physical and psychological barriers. Despite these challenges, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of climbing Mount Everest.
Bear Grylls is a true example of determination and perseverance. He has defied his detractors, and even after facing several failures, he continues to push his boundaries. His near-death experience only fueled his desire to pursue adventures even more vigorously. In addition to his TV shows, he is also a renowned survival educator, writer, businessman, and former Special Air Service (SAS) member. He is an Honorary Colonel and is committed to promoting adventure sports and outdoor activities that test one’s limits.
Bear Grylls was born on 7 June 1974 in London, England, to Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah ‘Sally’ Grylls. His elder sister Lara Fawcett gave him his nickname ‘Bear’ when he was just one week old. He was raised in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, and when he was four years old, his family moved to Bembridge village on the Isle of Wight.
As a child, Bear was trained by his father to climb and sail. He became a cub scout at the age of eight and was educated at Ludgrove School and Eton College. He initiated the foundation of a climbing club at Eton College and also earned a black belt in Shotokan karate. He was trained to skydive in his youth.
After joining the Territorial Army, Bear spent three years in the army’s special air service unit. He was an instructor in combat survival and learned demolitions, parachuting, unarmed fighting, evasion, and trauma drug. However, during this period, he encountered a spinal injury accident, and to recuperate from the injury, he required medicine and rehabilitation.
In 1997, he climbed Mount Ama Dablam and became the youngest British person to achieve this accomplishment. He then walked the Sikkim and the western Bengal Himalayan mountains and climbed Everest on 16 May 1998, entering his name in the Guinness Book of Records.
In 2000, Bear undertook a fundraising excursion for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and led a Jet-Skis team to sail around the UK. The journey took 30 days to accomplish, and it was a pioneering initiative. That same year, he published his debut book ‘The Kid Who Climbed Everest,’ which described his journey to the mountain peak. He then wrote a book called ‘Facing the Frozen Ocean’ and has since written books like “Born Survivor: Bear Grylls” and “Bear Grylls Outdoor Adventures.”
Bear Grylls finished his part-time Hispanic Studies degree from ‘Birkbeck, University of London’ in 2002 and also attended West England University. In 2003, he went on a journey to the Arctic Ocean in the North Atlantic with a team of five members. They sailed to Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, and eventually Scotland from Nova Scotia.
In 2005, Bear created a new record by hosting the highest formal open-air dinner party. He planned the party alongside mountaineer David Hempleman-Adams and Leader of “Royal Navy Freefall Parachute Display Team Lieutenant Commander Alan Veal.” That same year, he appeared in the ‘Escape to the Legion TV series.
He undertook an excursion and led a para-engine team across Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, in 2005. In 2006, his television series ‘Man vs. Wild’ was released. Initially entitled ‘Born Survivor: Bear Grylls,’ the show was broadcast in Great Britain. Over the years, the show has become famous worldwide for depicting Grylls’ survival skills in some of the toughest settings.
In 2007, when he flew a parajet across the Himalayas, he set a new record. In the following year, dual amputee Al Hodgson and Scotsman Freddy MacDonald accompanied him in setting the “Guinness World Record” for the “longest indoor storm.”
In 2009, at the age of 35, he was appointed Chief Scout of “The Scout Association,” making him the youngest person to occupy the rank of chief scout. His appointment was extended to 2020, making him the longest-serving chief scout in history.
Supported by a team of five, he sailed over the Northwest Passage on a rigid-inflatable boat in 2010. That same year, he appeared in a show called ‘Worst-Case Scenario’ on the Discovery Channel. The following year, he performed in the show ‘Bear’s Wild Weekend.’
His book ‘Scouting for Everyone’ was published in 2011, and he has also written a series of books called ‘Mission Survival,’ which includes volumes like ‘Gold of the Gods,’ ‘Way of the Wolf,’ ‘Sands of the Scorpion,’ ‘Tiger Tracks,’ and ‘Crocodile Claws.’ In 2012, his autobiography “Mud, Sweat and Tears: Autobiography” was released, followed by books such as ‘A Survival Guide for Life’ and ‘True Grit.’
The show ‘Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls’ premiered in 2013, and the same year, ‘Bear Grylls: Escape From Hell’ aired for the first time. He hosted ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’ the following year, featuring 13 individuals on a lonely Pacific island.
In 2014, he started his show “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” which featured prominent people like Tamron Hall, Zac Efron, Tom Arnold, Ben Stiller, Deion Sanders, and Channing Tatum.
In 2015, he hosted a different reality show called ‘Bear Grylls: Mission Survive,’ featuring eight famous individuals with specific tasks to survive. DJ and model Vogue Williams won the inaugural season. The show was revived for a new season in 2016, won by Alex Scott, a player for Arsenal F.C. However, it was discontinued due to poor ratings.
In 2015, he also introduced ‘Survivor Games’ to China, and in 2016, ‘Bear Grylls Survivor School.’ Since then, he has been a part of “Bear’s Mission With…,” England’s edition of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” featuring several British celebrities going on an expedition in each episode with Grylls.
