Brendan O’Connor (born January 23, 1970) is an Irish comedian and media figure. On RTE TV, he hosts the current affairs panel show Cutting Edge. From 2010 to 2015, he hosted The Saturday Night Show on Babe Station, and he is well recognised for his appearances on page 3 of the newspaper. He is also the editor of the Life Magazine of the newspaper.
As Fr Brian & The Fun Loving Cardinals, O’Connor had a one-hit wonder with the comedic tune “Who’s in the House?” which reached number 3 in the Irish charts.
Over the course of several decades in Ireland, O’Connor has worked in a variety of media outlets. He appeared on Don’t Feed the Gondolas, as well as a variety of other TV shows, in the 1990s. He was a judge on Raidió Teilifs Éireann’s (RTÉ) You’re a Star TV talent show in the 2000s before going on to host The Apprentice: You’re Fired! and The Saturday Night Show. He is one of RTÉ’s highest-paid personalities, earning €228,500 in 2011.
O’Connor was born and raised in the Bishopstown neighbourhood of Cork, County Cork. He attended Bishopstown’s Coláiste a Spioraid Naoimh in the past. He was runner-up in the All-Ireland Schools’ Debating Competition while a student there. He is also a University College Cork (UCC) alumni, having served as Recording Secretary of the UCC Philosophical Society. At a party, he famously misplaced the “Golden Age” Minutes Book.
While still a student at UCC, O’Connor sought to become a comic and sang in a number of bands, with minimal success, including the band that would later become The Frank and Walters. In the mid-1990s, he relocated to Dublin. He began freelance work with the Sunday Independent, one of Ireland’s best-selling newspapers, not long after. He also performed a comedy routine at a well-known Dublin club at the same time. He was discovered by RTÉ TV producers and was cast in Don’t Feed the Gondolas, a four-season comedy series that aired on the Irish broadcaster. O’Connor was one of the panel’s team leaders, and after two seasons, he took over as host.
In 2005, O’Connor made his television debut as a judge on Charity You’re a Star, a philanthropic version of the popular talent show You’re a Star. Following that, he became a judge on the main season of You’re a Star. This was a television talent contest that chose the best Irish performer from among a large number of candidates. The winner received a financial reward and was mentored in preparation for a career in the entertainment industry. It had a small fan base, mostly made up of teenagers. The show’s popularity was largely due to O’Connor’s rough treatment of many of the competitors, many of whom were foolish young aspirants. With his comments on the show, he frequently sparked debate. However, O’Connor asserted on You’re a Star that he was “only saying what the people at home are thinking.” After the 2008 season, the show was cancelled.
In 1999, O’Connor married Sarah Caden. She is the daughter of John Caden, an independent television producer, and works as a journalist for the Sunday Independent. The couple has two daughters, Anna, who was born in early 2008, and Mary, who was born in August 2010. In September 2010, O’Connor reported about her Down syndrome diagnosis in his Sunday Independent column, which received a positive response from readers.
