Bruce Stanley Kovner (born 1945) is a philanthropist, hedge fund manager, and investor from the United States. He is the Chairman of CAM Capital, a company he founded in January 2012 to manage his investing, trading, and commercial interests. Kovner was the founder and chairman of Caxton Associates, LP, a diversified trading firm, from 1983 to 2011.
Kovner is Chairman of The Juilliard School’s Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He is also a member of the Metropolitan Opera and the American Enterprise Institute’s boards of directors.
Isidore Kovner, an engineer who briefly played semi-professional football, and his wife, Sophie, raised Bruce Stanley Kovner in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Before moving to suburban Los Angeles in 1953, Kovner spent his early years in the Borough Park district of Brooklyn with his parents and three siblings. He was a high achiever from the start, earning the title of Merit Scholar. At the age of 16, he was the student body president of Van Nuys High School and a gifted basketball player and pianist.
Beginning in 1962, Kovner attended Harvard College, a period marked by the hanging death of his mother in his family’s Van Nuys home in 1965.
Despite this, he was regarded as a good student who was widely loved by his peers. Kovner continued his studies at Harvard, where he studied political economy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he studied under noted conservative researcher Edward C. Banfield.
Kovner did not complete his Ph.D. and instead continued his education at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government until 1970. He worked on political campaigns, studied the harpsichord, was a writer, and drove a cab for the following five years. He found commodities trading during the latter career, not long after his marriage to his ex-wife Sarah Peter.
The Kovner Foundation was founded in 1996 by Kovner to support organisations that promote excellence in the arts and education, as well as initiatives that defend private enterprise and protect individual rights, as well as scholarly studies and research that strengthen American democratic principles.
Kovner has been chairman of The Juilliard School’s board of trustees since 2001, and has been a long-time supporter of the school. Bruce and Suzie Kovner funded the Kovner Fellowship Program at Juilliard with a $60 million grant in 2013, the school’s greatest one-time gift. Kovner endowed Juilliard’s graduate programme in historical performance with a $20 million gift in 2012. In 2006, Kovner gave Juilliard a collection of music manuscripts. Kovner is the vice chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and a significant funder of the center’s reconstruction. The School Choice Scholarships Foundation, which granted scholarships to financially underprivileged youth in New York City, was formed by Kovner and he served as its chairman. Other charter schools, such as Success Academy Charter Schools, where his wife Suzie serves on the board, have benefited from his assistance.
Kovner has made significant contributions to conservative causes. He gave about $500,000 to Restore our Future, a Super PAC supporting Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, in January 2012. He is the former chairman of the American Enterprise Institute’s board of trustees. He was previously a supporter of the Manhattan Institute and a shareholder in The New York Sun daily newspaper. From 2003 through 2010, Robert Brulle’s foundation sponsored conservative organisations that could have been involved in conservative climate change studies, according to a paper. The Guardian slammed the report since the majority of the organisations in the study have several focuses, and Brulle couldn’t tell how much money was spent on climate concerns.
Kovner is married twice and has three children, including Rachel P. Kovner, a federal district judge in Brooklyn. He married artist Sarah Peter in a Jewish ceremony in Connecticut in 1973, when he was 28 years old. In 1998, they divorced. In 2007, he married Suzie Fairchild, the daughter of Robert Fairchild and great-granddaughter of Louis Fairchild, who created Fairchild Fashion Media, now a division of Condé Nast Publications, with his brother Edmund Fairchild.
