The use of time travel came about when Gabaldon decided it would be interesting to have “an Englishwoman to play off all these kilted Scotsmen,” but her female character “refused to shut up and talk like an 18th century person.” This idea gave rise to Claire, the beautiful and stubborn English nurse “who took over the throne” of Jamie Fraser. Gabaldon stated, “I’m afraid Jamie Fraser has nothing else in common with Jamie MacCrimmon save the kilt. Later on in the year 1988, Gabaldon made public a little portion of her work by posting it on the CompuServe Literary Forum, also known as the “Lit.Forum,” which is a gathering place for individuals who like reading (the forum is still extant, but is now called The Compuserve Books and Writers Community). She was an active part of this community for discussing books, and she had uploaded many chapters of her unfinished work in order to bolster her claims in a dispute with a male forum member about what it is like to be pregnant. The argument was about what it is like to be pregnant. After reading her brief message, a science fiction and fantasy agency made her an offer to represent her work within a few days.
