Diana Krall, a Canadian jazz artist who has found crossover success with her sensuous, natural contralto voice and beautiful piano playing, was born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.

Krall learned to play the piano and sing by ear from her father’s collection of records of Fats Waller and other jazz greats when she was a child, and she also participated in church choirs. At 15, she embarked on a professional piano playing career, during which she attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and studied privately with jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles. She performed in the United States and Canada, where she honed a setlist of songs that were both subtle and refined, relying on a cool jazz rhythm section that featured her own piano and, on occasion, adding unobtrusive string-orchestra backgrounds.

In her latest album, Turn Up the Quiet, she sticks to the basics (2017). Krall and Tony Bennett covered Gershwin tunes for their 2018 album, Love Is Here to Stay. She paid respect to her late longtime producer Tommy LiPuma in the low-key This Dream of You (2020).

Krall has made cameos in the movies and on TV now and then. During the 2004 biopic De-Lovely, she gave a memorable performance of “Just One of Those Things” by Cole Porter.

Whitney Houston, the cousin of Dionne Warwick and the daughter of singer Emily (“Cissy”) Houston (whose group, the Sweet Inspirations, provided backup vocals for Aretha Franklin), began her singing career in the church choir. She began her career in the entertainment industry while still in high school, providing backing vocals for Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls and appearing on the covers of fashion publications.

One of her signature songs, “Greatest Love of All,” and two others, “Saving All My Love for You” and “How Will I Know,” were were number one hits in the United States from her debut album Whitney Houston (1985). With Whitney (1987), Houston notched four additional top 10 hits and won a Grammy for best pop vocal performance.

In 1992, Houston wed singer Bobby Brown and made her cinematic debut in The Bodyguard, where her cover of “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton spent 14 weeks at the top of the charts. Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance were all won by Houston for the film’s soundtrack the next year. The soundtracks of films she appeared in during the mid-1990s, like Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996), led to radio hits for her.

My Love Is Your Love, Houston’s 1998 album, did not do as well commercially but was warmly received by critics and won her a Grammy. She re-signed a multi-album deal with Arista in 2001 worth $100 million, but she soon found that her personal problems were overshadowing her professional ones. The tabloids were able to make use of Houston’s admitted drug usage and financial problems, as well as her troubled relationship with Brown (the pair separated in 2007). Just Whitney, her album released in 2002 in response to her critics, received mixed to negative reviews and poor sales. Other than releasing a lackluster Christmas album (2003’s One Wish), Houston essentially went into retirement for the next few years.

She kicked off her comeback at Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy Awards event in February 2009, performing four songs. The show was so well received that Houston promised a new record for release later that year in June. Released in August to generally excellent reception, I Look to You has such noteworthy tracks as the upbeat “Million Dollar Bill” (written by Alicia Keys) and the title track, a slowly-building ballad written by R. Kelly.

Houston drowned in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub in February 2012, just days before Davis’s Grammys bash. According to an autopsy report published in March, the individual drowned due to an accident; heart disease and cocaine usage were identified as contributory causes. Even after her death, Houston was included in the musical film Sparkle (2012), which she had helped produce. 2020 will mark her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In the early to mid-1980s, American singer, songwriter, and dancer Michael Jackson was the most popular entertainer on the planet. His full name, Michael Joseph Jackson or Michael Joe Jackson (see Researcher’s Note), was Michael Jackson.  He died on June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, California. Michael Jackson grew born in Gary, Indiana, as the youngest and most gifted of five siblings whom his father, Joseph, molded into dazzling child stars known as the Jackson 5. Besides Michael, the Jackson 5 consisted of Jackie (born Sigmund Jackson; born May 4, 1951 in Gary), Tito (born Toriano Jackson; born October 15, 1953 in Gary), Jermaine (born December 11, 1954 in Gary), and Marlon (born May 4, 1956 in Gary) (b. March 12, 1957, Gary).

In 1969, they were signed by Motown Records’ president Berry Gordy, Jr. With the biggest Afros, the flashiest dance, and a youthful, soulful exuberance, the Jackson 5 shot to fame. I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, and I’ll Be There were all top 10 pop songs for them in 1970. Through 1975, the Jackson family continued to produce song after hit for Motown, with Michael’s solo efforts topping the pop charts with “Ben” and “Rockin’ Robin,” and the Jackson 5 setting new standards in dance music with “Dancing Machine.”

Michael’s voice changed as he got older; family conflicts flared up; and a contractual impasse developed. Once they had enough of Motown, the group left to sign with Epic Records under the name the Jacksons. After Randy Jackson succeeded his older brother at Motown, Jermaine stayed on as a solo artist (in full Steven Randall Jackson; b. October 29, 1961). The Jackson 5 had a string of hit albums up until 1984, and Janet Jackson started her own solo career in the early ’80s, but Michael Jackson’s solo albums were in a league of their own.

With Off the Wall (1979), Jackson debuted as a solo artist for Epic and immediately became a huge commercial success (it eventually sold more than 20 million copies). Both “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You,” from Michael’s big international success album Off the Wall, were produced by music industry veteran Quincy Jones and highlighted his upbeat approach while also capitalizing on the disco dance craze of the time. Three years later, he and Jones reunited for another masterpiece, Thriller, which included a slew of cameos and catapulted him to international fame.

Thriller won an unprecedented eight Grammys, dominated the charts for over two years, and sold over 40 million copies, making it the best-selling album of all time for a very long time. The album’s lead song, a breezy duet with Paul McCartney called “The Girl Is Mine,” peaked at No. 1 on the rhythm-and-blues charts and No. 2 on the pop charts that fall of 1982. Both “Beat It,” featuring a rowdy solo from legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and its follow-up, “Billie Jean,” an exhilarating dance hit and the vehicle for Jackson’s famous “moonwalk” dance, topped the mainstream charts. More than that, “Beat It” aided in tearing down the phony walls that separated Black and white performers on the radio and in the new music video format on television.

The title of “King of Pop” was officially bestowed upon Jackson by the media in 1984. One of 1984’s biggest tours, the Victory tour, featured his long-awaited reunion with his siblings. Jackson and Lionel Richie collaborated on “We Are the World” in 1985, which became the trademark track for the all-star USA for Africa project to aid with famine relief in Africa. Michael Jackson’s continued solo success is attested to by the chart-topping success of Bad (1987) and Dangerous (1991), both of which featured significant contributions from New Jack Swing phenomenon Teddy Riley. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, following the Jackson 5’s induction the year before.

Following these occurrences, Jackson’s financial situation deteriorated to the point where he had to sell off many of his valuable possessions, including the opulent Neverland property. After his untimely death from cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009, which prompted an outpouring of grief from his fans, a memorial celebration of his life and legacy was held on July 7 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Friends and luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy, Jr., Brooke Shields, and Al Sharpton paid tribute to the late singer. The coroner ruled Jackson’s death a homicide in August 2009; he was given a deadly dose of sedatives and the anesthetic propofol, which killed him. As of that November 2011 verdict, Jackson’s personal physician was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Over the course of Jackson’s preparations for his 50-show comeback engagement in London, more than 100 hours of video were compiled for the documentary film This Is It, which had its world premiere in October 2009. In addition, Jackson’s “Thriller” (1983) music video directed by John Landis was the first music video to be entered into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2009. Later documentaries like “Leaving Neverland” (2019) focus on two guys who claim they were sexually molested by Jackson when they were young.
