Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessman and television celebrity who served as President of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
Trump was born and raised in Queens, New York City, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1971, he took over his father Fred Trump’s real estate company and renamed it The Trump Organization. Trump expanded his business to include the construction and renovation of buildings, hotels, casinos, and golf courses. Later, he created a number of side businesses, largely by licencing his name. More than 4,000 state and federal court actions have been filed against Trump and his enterprises, including six bankruptcies. From 1996 to 2015, he was the owner of the Miss Universe beauty competition. He co-produced and hosted the reality television series The Apprentice from 2003 to 2015.
Populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist have all been used to define Trump’s political stances. He ran as a Republican in the 2016 presidential election and defeated Democratic contender Hillary Clinton in an upset victory, despite losing the popular vote. Protests erupted in response to his election and policies. During his campaigns and presidency, Trump made several false and deceptive comments, to an unparalleled degree in American politics. Many of his remarks and acts have been labelled racist or racially motivated.
Trump issued a travel ban on nationals of many Muslim-majority nations, claiming security concerns; the Supreme Court upheld the policy’s third revision after legal challenges. He signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which reduced taxes for people and corporations and repealed the Affordable Care Act’s individual health insurance mandate penalty. More than 200 federal judges have been nominated by Trump, including three Supreme Court nominees: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Trump adopted an America First agenda in foreign policy, renaming the North American Free Trade Agreement the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement and withdrawing the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Iran nuclear deal. He increased import taxes, sparking a trade war with China, and met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un three times, but disarmament talks eventually fell through. Trump was reluctant to respond to the COVID-19 epidemic, ignoring or contradicting several health authorities’ recommendations in his communications, and spreading misinformation about experimental therapies and testing options.
Russia meddled in the 2016 election to assist Trump win, but Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation into the meddling found insufficient evidence to prove a criminal conspiracy or collaboration between the Trump campaign and Russia. Mueller also looked into whether Trump obstructed justice, but he didn’t prosecute or exonerate him. On December 18, 2019, the House of Representatives impeached Trump for abuse of authority and obstruction of Congress after Trump pressured Ukraine to probe his political adversary Joe Biden. On February 5, 2020, the Senate acquitted him of both counts.
He enrolled in the New York Military Academy, a private boarding school, when he was 13 years old, and Fordham University in 1964. In 1973 and 1976, the New York Times falsely stated that he had graduated top in his class from Wharton; in fact, he had never made the honour roll at the school. Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen threatened legal action against Trump’s colleges, high school, and the College Board if they disclosed Trump’s academic records in 2015. He was designated 1-Y, a conditional medical deferment, in October 1968, and reclassified 4-F, permanently banning him from duty, in 1972, due to bone spurs.
Trump bought the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League in September 1983. The league disbanded after the 1985 season, owing to Trump’s strategy of relocating games to the fall (when they competed for viewership with the NFL) and attempting to force a merger with the NFL by filing an antitrust suit against the organisation.
When speaking to the media and on social media, Trump has a history of demeaning and dismissing women. He made filthy remarks about women’s appearances, calling them things like ‘dog,’ ‘crazed, sobbing lowlife,’ ‘face of a pig,’ and ‘horseface.’
