Drew Christopher Brees was born in Dallas on January 15, 1979, to Eugene Wilson “Chip” Brees II, a well-known defense lawyer, and Mina Ruth, a lawyer. Brees’ parents divorced when he was seven years old, and the boys were live separately between both parents’ homes.
Brees and his younger brother, Reid, got quite close as a result of their togetherness. Audrey, their younger half-sister, is the child of their father’s remarriage to Amy Hightower, the daughter of the late United States Representative (D-TX) Jack English Hightower.
Both of Brees’s parents had athletic backgrounds. His father was a member of the Texas A&M men’s basketball team, and his mother was a three-sport all-state performer in high school. Reid, his younger brother, was an outfielder for the Baylor Bears baseball team, which won the College World Series in 2005; Reid now works in sales in Colorado.
Drew earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial management in 2001 and is a Sigma Chi fraternity member. Brees married Brittany Dudchenko, his college love, in February 2003. The couple has four children: three sons born in January 2009, October 2010, and August 2012, as well as a daughter born in August 2014.
All four children were born and are being raised in New Orleans. Faith, family, football, and philanthropy are Brees’ four goals in life, which he refers to as the “four F’s.” Brees lives in San Diego during the offseason.
Brees’ first book, Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity, was released on July 6, 2010, co-authored by Chris Fabry. Coming Back Stronger debuted at number three on The New York Times nonfiction bestseller list.
Brees was chosen by fans as the cover athlete for the EA Sports Madden NFL 11 video game in April 2010. In honor of late baseball star Ted Williams, Brees wears #9 on his uniform.
Brees has earned the nicknames “Breesus” and “Cool Brees” from Saints fans, which he earned during his early years for his composure under pressure.
Due to food allergies, Brees follows a rigorous diet that excludes gluten, dairy, and nuts. He also follows a regular fitness routine that focuses on core strength exercises rather than excessive weight lifting. Brees is a member of the Republican Party.
Brees was a standout high-school football player in Austin, Texas, leading his team to a state championship and was named Texas 5A Offensive Player of the Year in 1996 (the category that includes the state’s largest high schools). He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, after being rejected by the major college programs in his native state because he was too short (6 feet tall) and too weak-armed.
Brees set two NCAA records, thirteen Big Ten Conference records, and nineteen Purdue University records during his undergraduate career. He finished his career at Purdue with Big Ten Conference records in passing yards (11,792), touchdown passes (90), total offensive yards (12,693), completions (1,026), and attempts (1,026). (1,678).
Due to concerns about his relatively low size for a professional quarterback (6′), a perceived lack of arm power, and a belief that he had prospered in college in a spread scheme, Brees was projected to be a mid-late first-round selection pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. After Michael Vick, Brees was the second quarterback taken in the 2001 Draft.
He has selected the starter for the 2002 season over Doug Flutie on August 19, 2002. For the Chargers, Brees started all 16 games. The Chargers started the season brightly, going 6–1, but collapsed down the stretch, going 2–7 in their final nine games to end 8–8. He completed for 3,284 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions during the 2002 season.
Brees was eligible to be traded or signed with another team under the provisions of his franchise player deal, but the Chargers would get two future first-round draught picks in exchange. He was not traded, and he remained the starter for the duration of the 2005 season.
Brees helped lead the New England Patriots to a 41–17 triumph after a 0–2 start. On January 5, 2006, Brees had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder, which was performed by Dr. James Andrews.
The Chargers offered Brees a five-year, $50 million contract after the season, with the first year’s base salary of $2 million and the remainder heavily based on performance incentives. Brees visited with other teams after the Chargers failed to improve their offer.
On March 14, 2006, Brees agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract with the Saints. Brees had a successful rookie season with the Saints. The club rebounded from a devastating 2005 season to end with a 10–6 regular-season record and win the NFC South division title under first-year head coach Sean Payton. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week on November 5 after throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a 31–14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brees has played for the Saints for the last 15 years of his NFL career. During that period, he was a 12-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, leading the league in passing seven times.
Brees announced his retirement after 20 seasons on March 14, 2021, exactly 15 years after signing his first deal with the New Orleans Saints. Even after his retirement, Brees retains an emotional attachment to the Saints and will be recognized as a club icon.
