King was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 3, 1989, to Rob Schneider, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, and London King, a former model. Her mother remarried after her parents separated. She grew up in Ohio, between the cities of Wellston and Columbus. Her stepfather, Justin Tesa, gave her a record by the Donnas, an all-female hard-rock band, when she was nine years old, and she credits this as the turning point in her decision to pursue a career as a musician. She began listening to the Runaways and Blondie about this time, and she made her acting debut in the film Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo with her father.
King began playing guitar at the age of 13 and grew up listening to Otis Redding, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Earl Scruggs’ country and bluegrass music motivated her to pick up the banjo. She attended Buck’s Rock camp in Connecticut as a teenager, where she was a successful star in a number of musicals.
She made her acting debut in her father’s film Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo in 1999. She began gigging around New York City at the age of 16, using a fake ID to get admission to local nightclubs. King immersed herself in the local songwriting community and busked her way around town, honing her performing talents. Peter Edge, the newly appointed Chairman of the RCA, then signed King. On March 13, 2012, her debut track “Good To Be A Man” was published as a digital download and a 7″ vinyl single. The Elle King EP, consisting of four songs, was released on RCA on June 12, 2012. The EP was recorded in New York and produced by Andy Baldwin and Chris DeStefano, including a tune produced by King herself. “Playing for Keeps,” the EP’s opening tune, was picked as the theme song for VH1’s Mob Wives Chicago series, which premiered on June 10, 2012.
The lead track from King’s debut album, “Ex’s & Oh’s,” was released in September 2014. The next day, she performed “Ex’s & Oh’s” on The Today Show to promote it. The song debuted at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, making it King’s first top ten hit in the United States. At the 58th Grammy Awards, “Ex’s & Oh’s” received two nominations: Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. King opened for Modest Mouse on their UK tour in July 2015. Following that, the singles “Under the Influence” and “America’s Sweetheart” were released for rock and mainstream radio, respectively. Her song “Good Girls,” which was featured on the Ghostbusters album and played over the credits, was released in 2016. She collaborated with country musician Dierks Bentley on the song “Different for Girls” in 2016. On November 2, 2016, she and Bentley won the title for Musical Event of the Year at the 50th CMA Awards, where they performed this song.
On March 6, 2017, she released “Wild Love,” a new single with minimalist electronic production that marked a modest shift from her prior musical style.
In January 2016, King began dating Andrew Ferguson. They married on February 14, 2016, and on May 15, 2017, they announced their intention to divorce. After allegedly holding King by the throat and threatening to murder her on April 23, 2017, Ferguson was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence, though the allegation was eventually withdrawn. In late 2017, King and Ferguson had a brief reconciliation. King has been in a new relationship since October 2018.
