Jenni Rivera was born on July 2, 1969. She is best known for her work in the regional Mexican music genre, especially in the styles of Banda, Mariachi, and Norteo. Several media outlets, including CNN, Billboard, Fox News, and The New York Times, have referred to her as the most influential female figure and top-selling female artist in regional Mexican music, both in life and in death. She was called the “top Latin artist of 2013” and the “best selling Latin artist of 2013” by Billboard magazine.
Rivera, her sister, and four brothers were raised in a close-knit, musical family; her brother Lupillo is also a regional Mexican musician. Rivera was fluent in both English and Spanish. Her family was the first to introduce her to traditional Mexican music, such as banda, nortea, and ranchera. Rivera received straight A’s until her sophomore year, when she became pregnant with Janney “Chiquis” Marn-Rivera, the first of her five children, at the age of 15. She helped the two of them by selling CDs at flea markets and completing her GED at a continuation school, where she graduated as class valedictorian. Rivera elaborated on her experiences as a teenage mother in 2003.
Rivera got her start in music in 1992, when she recorded for her father as a Father’s Day gift; she went on to record more songs and sign with Capitol/Latin EMI’s division. Chacalosa (slang for “party girl”) was her debut album, released in 1995.

She was told several times at the start of her musical career that she would not make it. Men dominated the genre known as regional Mexican music at the time, and they still do today. She said in a 2011 interview with Billboard magazine, “It was difficult to get my music played by knocking on those doors. One radio DJ in L.A., the world’s meanest son of a bitch, threw my CD in the garbage right in front of my ears.” Rivera had to deal with problems like these as a woman seeking to break into the regional Mexican genre. She then went on to self-release the albums We Are Rivera and Farewell to Selena, the latter of which was a tribute to Tejano singer Selena, who was murdered in 1995.

Her breakthrough came with the release of Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida in 2005, which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and has been certified double-platinum in the Latin sector by the Recording Industry Association of America since its release. “De Contrabando,” the album’s second single, became her first and only number—one hit in the United States, reaching Latin Regional Mexican Airplay. It’s also one of her most well-known albums.
She revealed in 2010 that she would be going on tour to support her new album, La Gran Seora. At the conclusion of the tour, she released La Gran Seora en Vivo. On August 6–7, 2010, she recorded the album and became the first artist to sell out two consecutive nights at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Rivera had five children and was married three times. While still in high school, she gave birth to her first child, Janney, better known as Chiquis (born 1985). She later married the baby’s father, José Trinidad Marn, and they went on to have two more twins, Jacqueline (born 1989) and Michael (born 1991), but she divorced him in 1992, citing physical and emotional violence. Rosie, Jenni’s younger sister, admitted in 1997 that Jenni’s ex-husband (Marn) used to sexually molest her and was now doing the same to Chiquis; a physical examination revealed that he had done the same to Jacqie. The molestation lawsuit was filed in 1997, and Marn evaded capture for nine years before being arrested in April 2006, convicted of sexual assault and rape, and sentenced to more than 31 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Before divorcing in 2003, they had a daughter named Jenicka and a son named Juan Angel. López was accused of cocaine trafficking in 2007. In 2009, he died in jail from pneumonia complications.
