Reading is a hobby of mine.
Still, I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to create books as a career. I create works of fiction and nonfiction, including picture books, for both young and old audiences. Caldecott Medal winner and New York Times bestseller BLACKOUT is only one of many prestigious awards bestowed upon my novels. I’ve illustrated several best-selling series by Rick Riordan, including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus.
John Rocco is best known for his novels and short stories, including A Not So Pleasant Surprise (2012), The Night Sitter (2018), and Just Say No (2011). John Rocco is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of numerous acclaimed books for kids, including the Caldecott Honor-winning Blackout and the Sibert Honor-winning How We Got to the Moon, which was also longlisted for the National Book Award. Rocco has illustrated the covers for three of Rick Riordan’s internationally best-selling series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo.
Also, he was responsible for the illustrations in the New York Times best-sellers Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
In the entertainment industry, Rocco spent a great deal of his career as an art director. At Dreamworks, Rocco was the pre-production art director of the smash hit animated film Shrek. When he wasn’t designing attractions for Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, he was working as the art director for DisneyQuest, the virtual reality theme park in Downtown Disney.
The Newseum in Washington, DC, and Paul Allen’s Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame are just two of the museums where Rocco has made significant contributions. He worked alongside Robert Abel, a pioneer in the field of computer graphics who created some of the earliest CGI advertisements and special effects. John, his wife, and their daughter live in a 170-year-old house in Rhode Island. They also have a dog, two cats, three birds, seventeen tropical fish, and a few mice who make their home in the walls.
Rocco did not start taking art seriously till he was 19 years old. Rocco’s resume also includes stints as an international art director in the entertainment industry. Rocco was the pre-production art director for the Shrek movie at DreamWorks. He oversaw the design of DisneyQuest and Epcot attractions, and he also worked on the Disney World and Disneyland attractions. The companion volumes to the Percy Jackson series, Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods and Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes, were published in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and feature exquisite inside artwork by Rocco.
A starred review from Kirkus said of Riordan, “Riordan has a sure touch when it comes to squeezing lots into a little space—as does Rocco’s artwork, which smokes and writhes on the page as if struck by lightning.” After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, John Rocco spent 18 months working as the animation director at Imagine Asia in Manila, Philippines.
Rocco was involved in and oversaw several projects that included computer-generated imagery, motion capture, and original content development during his tenure. That I wrote novels was not a constant occurrence. Before I dedicated myself to writing and illustrating children’s books, I was an art director in the film and television industry. Television, theme parks, museums, and films all served as my canvas.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo are just some of the YA books whose covers John Rocco has done for the American market. And he did the interior and exterior art for the American editions of The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson, and the Olympians: Gods and Heroes, and Heroes of Olympus as well.
To relax, I enjoy a good book.
Still, I count my blessings every day that I get to write books for a living. I write fiction and nonfiction, including picture books, for readers of all ages. One of my books, BLACKOUT, was awarded the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times bestseller. I’ve done the artwork for numerous of Rick Riordan’s bestsellers, such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus.
