Karen L. Pritzker is a documentary film producer, investor, and philanthropist who was born in 1958. She is the granddaughter of A.N. Pritzker and the daughter of Robert Pritzker, and she is a member of the Pritzker family.
Pritzker is the daughter of Audrey (née Gilbert) and Robert Pritzker, and was born in Oberlin, Ohio. Jennifer N. Pritzker (b. 1950), a former Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and founder of the Pritzker Military Library, and Linda Pritzker (b. 1953), a Tibetan Buddhist American lama, are her two siblings. In 1979, her parents split. Albert B. Ratner, the co-chairman of Cleveland-based real estate developer Forest City Enterprises, remarried her mother in 1981. Her father remarried in 1980 to Irene Dryburgh and has two children with her: Matthew Pritzker and Liesel Pritzker Simmons.
Her father, together with his brothers Jay Pritzker and Donald Pritzker, diversified the Chicago-based family business, the Marmon Group, into a portfolio of over 60 varied industrial corporations. In 1957, they founded the Hyatt Hotel brand, and from 1983 to 1988, they owned Braniff Airlines. In 2006, the family sold Conwood, a smokeless tobacco company, to cigarette company Reynolds American Inc for $3.5 billion; in 2007, the family sold control of the Marmon Group to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway for $4.5 billion; and in 2010, the family sold its majority stake in Transunion, a Chicago-based credit reporting company, to an undisclosed buyer.
Pritzker earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University. Pritzker served as an editor at Working Mother magazine before the family sold it in 1986, and she has written for publications such as Success, Seventeen, Kirkus Reviews, and Newsday. Pritzker controls a wide asset base of growing biotechnology, medical device firms, consumer technology items, and real estate through her investment portfolio, the Pritzker/Vlock family office. Pritzker also runs LaunchCapital LLC, a venture capital firm that focuses on the technology, consumer, and medical sectors.
The Seedlings Foundation’s president and director is Karen Pritzker. Since its inception in 2002, the Seedlings Foundation has provided millions of dollars in grants, sparking progress in medical research, social assistance, adult job retraining, affordable housing, and internet news sites dedicated to local, factual, ad-free reporting. Pritzker and her husband gave the Yale University School of Medicine a $20 million gift. (including $3 million to fund a professorship); $5 million to Teach for America; and $1.5 million to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in honour of her father, who suffered from the disease. Pritzker contributed $1 million to the Treblinka concentration camp in 2007 to establish a new visitor centre. Karen also contributed to a new website called Truth in Advertising (TinA), tina.org, which gives information on deceptive advertising incidents. She is also a board member of Grameen America, a nonprofit that provides low-cost microloans to women living in poverty, as well as Grameen PrimaCare, a nonprofit that provides cheap health care to immigrant women.
