Kathleen Mary Griffin was born in Oak Park, Illinois, to parents John Patrick Griffin and Mary Margaret. She went to St. Bernadine’s Elementary School for her education.She later attended Oak Park and River Forest High School, where she joined the school’s musical theatre company with zeal. Her passion for performing grew at this time, and she longed to be an actress.
Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was eighteen years old in order to assist her pursue more acting possibilities.Her first television appearance was in a modest role in a commercial for the Chicago White Sox, a Major League Baseball team. She later joined with a number of Chicago talent agencies.She became a member of ‘The Groundlings,’ an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe, in the early 1980s. During this time, she struggled to break into the industry and repeatedly failed auditions.
She starred as a “alien extra” in the science fiction film “Battle Beyond the Stars,” directed by Jimmy T. Murakami, in 1980.
