Krist Anthony Novoselic is a musician and activist from the United States. His full name is Krist Anthony Novoselic (Croatian: Novoseli), and he was born on May 16, 1965. He co-founded the rock band Nirvana and served as the band’s bassist. Nirvana was created in 1987 by Novoselic, Kurt Cobain, and Aaron Burckhard, the band’s drummer. Novoselic and Cobain recruited Burckhard. Nirvana established itself as an integral component of the Seattle grunge culture during the latter half of the 1980s, and in 1989, they released their first album, Bleach.
After Dave Grohl’s previous band, Scream, disbanded in 1990, he joined Nirvana as the band’s drummer. Before that, Nirvana had a revolving door of drummers. In addition to that, he was a fan of Yugoslavian bands such as Zabranjeno Puenje, Prljavo Kazalte, and Azra. He was only 14 years old when he moved to Croatia for a year, and during that time, he developed an interest in punk music. He became aware of bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones during his time in Croatia. He has pointed to musicians like Paul McCartney, Geezer Butler, John Entwistle, and Gene Simmons as the primary inspirations behind his bass playing.
Novoselic’s brother Robert introduced him to his buddy Kurt Cobain, who had been paying attention to the loud music emanating from the Novoselic household’s upper level. Robert shared with Kurt Cobain the information that his elder brother was the one who was into punk music. Cobain subsequently became friends with Novoselic, who was older than him, because the two individuals had similar musical preferences, including a passion for the local band Melvins.
The two people knew numerous people in common and started hanging out together shortly after that. While Krist went to Aberdeen High School, Kurt went to Montesano High School in the same general area. After showing Novoselic a demo tape of his previous band, Fecal Matter, Kurt Cobain eventually requested Novoselic to join him in forming a band. Novoselic ultimately listened to the recording after a few months had passed, and he loved what he heard. As a result, he decided to form a band with Kurt Cobain.
Novoselic found employment as a painter and decorator shortly after graduating high school, but he was soon let go. Inspiring one another, Cobain and Novoselic formed a cover band of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Cobain played the drums while Novoselic sang and played the guitar in the round. After a few months had passed, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic got together with drummer Aaron Burckhard. Nirvana existed in a previous iteration before the current band, although they did not call themselves by that name. Burckhard was briefly in the bar before being replaced by Melvin’s drummer, Dale Crover. This continued until Novoselic and Cobain were introduced to Chad Channing. Bleach, the band’s first album, was released in 1989 after the trio recorded it.
After Channing departed from the band in 1990, Crover and Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters served as a temporary replacement. Novoselic contributed to the composition of several songs and was a source of inspiration for Cobain. Grohl was Nirvana’s sixth and final drummer when he left the band in 1994. When the crew arrived at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles in the spring of 1991 to record Nevermind, they were working on the album. The song “Polly” was written in part by Novoselic. Nevermind (1991) was an album that, upon its debut, surpassed all expectations and became a financial success all over the globe.
Nevermind’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became an international smash success, catapulting the band to the forefront of the music industry. Nirvana was awarded Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards for their music video for the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Nirvana performed “Lithium” throughout the concert. As Novoselic began to play the introductory bass line, he indicated that he could not hear his bass and continued playing.
Instead of carrying on with the performance, Novoselic performed a “Bass Toss,” in which he flung his bass guitar into the air. He subsequently claimed that he had miscalculated the ball’s height and “faked like he was knocked out.” He was unsuccessful in catching the ball. The musician Brian May immediately raced to provide him with medical assistance; fortunately, he did not sustain any injuries. Novoselic joined Cobain in singing “The Money Will Roll Right In,” originally performed by Oakland punk band Fang, during Nirvana’s show in Reading 1992.
Novoselic was a member of Nirvana and occasionally contributed vocals and backup vocals to the band. He was known to sing “Scoff” and “Rape Me” during live performances. In his own words, Novoselic has claimed, “I kind of discovered my voice for the first time, and the more I did it, the better it got.”Nirvana’s third studio album, In Utero, was released in September 1993 and debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart.
The recording sessions Steve Albini mixed were criticized by the band members, who said that parts of the songs “didn’t sound perfect.” Additionally, the band members agreed that Novoselic’s bass lines sounded “too low” in the mix. The number of copies of In Utero sold in the United States is 3.5 million. Nirvana performed on MTV Unplugged in November of that year, during which Lori Goldston played cello, Pat Smear made his debut as a guitarist, and Krist Novoselic played acoustic bass guitar, accordion, and acoustic rhythm guitar all at the same time.
This live performance was recorded and published as an album a year later under MTV Unplugged in New York. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. The band planned some session time at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle to work on recordings before starting their European tour in 1994. Because Cobain was missing most of the three-day session, Novoselic and Grohl spent their time working on demos of their compositions.
The two musicians finished several songs, some of which are titled “Exhausted,” “Big Me,” “February Stars,” and “Butterflies.” Cobain made the meeting until the third day of the session. The band made their last studio recording of the song “You Know You’re Right.”Nirvana disbanded unexpectedly in April 1994, just after Kurt Cobain passed away. Novoselic withdrew himself from public view for the better part of the remainder of that year. One of Nirvana’s rare public appearances occurred in September of the same year at the MTV Video Music Awards, when the “Heart-Shaped Box” music video was honored with the Best Alternative Video award.
Novoselic made use of the chance to show his respect for Kurt Cobain. Novoselic continued to experiment with other musical pursuits after Cobain’s passing away. In 1995, he and the Venezuelan artist Yva Las Vegas collaborated to establish the band Sweet 75, which issued a self-titled album the following year. In 1996, vocalist Johnny Cash, guitarist Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, and drummer Sean Kinney of Alice in Chains collaborated with Novoselic to record a rendition of Willie Nelson’s “Time of the Preacher” for the tribute album Twisted Willie, which was released in January of that same year.
Novoselic directed his debut film, L7: The Beauty Process 1998. It is a pseudo-documentary incorporating concert footage shot in 1997 in three American locations. Novoselic’s film was released in 1998. In 1999, he became a member of the No WTO Combo with Jello Biafra and the guitarist for Soundgarden Kim Thayil. During the recording sessions for the One by One album in 2002, Novoselic contributed uncredited backing vocals to the Foo Fighters song “Walking a Line,” written as a memorial to Kurt Cobain.
