It was not long before a young Verstappen came to the racecourse, he was born in Hasselt, Belgium, in 1997, and regularly traveled to Genk, Belgium, by 2003. In 2015, Verstappen joined Scuderia Toro Rosso, turning him into the youngest F1 driver in history, which almost two years surpassed Jaime Alguersuari’s record. In his debut season, Verstappen scored an impressive 49 points, taking two fourth places.
Verstappen has moved from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing and race alongside Daniel Ricciardo after just four races in 2016. In his first great team prize in Spain, he defied the odds and took the victory of an epic maiden under the relentless pressure of 2007 world champion Kimi Räikkönen. But Verstappen wasn’t finished. Another six podiums, perhaps the high-profile drive in rainy Brazil, finished Verstappen fifth in the 2016 World Championship and proved him the hottest young talent in F1. More promising results were obtained in 2017, with victories in Malaysia and Mexico, Japan, and China, securing it sixth overall.
In the 2019 Formula One Season, Verstappen was once again better off with a 3rd place overall finish due to consistent performances, which earned it top places in Australia and Spain, a memorable win at the Red Bull Ring at the Österreicher Grand Prix, and a dramatic and rain-fed German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring.
After this campaign he finished the 2019 podium campaign in Hungary, Singapore, the U.S., Brazil, and Abu Dhabi, confirming his reputation as one of the most awesome and improving drivers of Formula One. Afterward, Verstappen ended speculation about his future by signing a contract extension, a move that seemed to inspire even greater results by 2020.
He finished second in Hungarian Grand Prix and British Grand Prix after winning third place in the Styrian Grand Prix. At that point, it was obvious that Verstappen was home on the F1 podium for himself, and once again he won first place in the UK 70th anniversary Formula One Grand Prix. The Netherlands driver ended the season in style with victory in Abu Dhabi and finished third overall in the campaign. At only 17, Verstappen came as the youngest Formula 1 rider ever to compete, pushing his car, his rivals and the sport’s record books to their limits. The baby-faced Dutchman took the Toro Rosso – and then the Red Bull– in his instinctive style by his horns with a lion’s heart.
At the age of 18 years and 228 days, F1’s youngest scorer became his youngest winner soon with an opportunistic but controlled first-time drive for Red Bull in Barcelona 2016. Another impressive drive from the back of the pack to the podium on a treacherous wet trail in Brazil kept the applause coming.
Verstappen’s unbridled attitudes and tough defenses sometimes ended up with his peers and paymasters in hot water. But the mistakes which had initially marred his potential have given way to maturity, while his bravado and energy have remained – and victories have continued to come.
The son of Jos Verstappen, the former F1 driver, and Mum Sophie Kumpen, super-fast, racing through his genes. The expectations for the leading light of the next generation are high – but with Verstappen, there is a sense that the sky is at its limits.
Verstappen will also earn additional revenues from his personal sponsors, including the Dutch companies Ziggo and Jumbo, and the clothing company G-Star Raw.
Their first car of Verstappen was a yellow Renault Clio, a gift given to him. Even though he was driving for Toro Rosso in Formula I at that time, he could not initially drive the car without a road driving license. Verstappen also owned a Porsche 911 GT3 RS and an Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante.
Jos was the guide of Verstappen’s career, who was present during his Karting days and who continued to influence his son through the junior formulas. Verstappen Sr is always present in Red Bull Garage today and supports the progress of his son as he seeks a world championship. In recent times, Max spoke of the desire of the pair to compete in a future endurance event together.
The early F1 helmets from Verstappen were dominated by Red Bull corporate colors, with a heavy dark blue presence. In 2020, however, the Netherlands turned to a largely white design with Red Bull logos flashing over the lid and orange shades, a design that is going to be maintained by 2021.
In 2008 there were additional titles including the Belgian Cadet Championship, Verstappen, now 11, began to climb the karting ladder. A move towards the international level did not help him as he won the WSK KF3 World Series and the Euro Title – the latter of which he retained the following year.
In 2012, he continued to compete in various categories of karting and enjoyed mixed success. But the following season he came of age, collecting an awesome collection of trophies. The world championship was also won by CIK-FIA KZ and several rivals, including former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari.
Verstappen also added the European titles of the KF and KZ, lifted the crowns of the KZ1 Euro Series and the KZ2 WSK Master Series, and added the Winter Cup of the KF2. Following one of the most impressive karting campaigns of recent years, the 16-year-old Verstappen was ready to take a step into slippery racing.
His first stop was the 2014 Florida Winter Series, with a dozen races running over four weeks at the start of the year. He started off badly when he crashed into the pits of Antonio Fuoco shortly after the first session. But Verstappen won two times in the field of Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Three. Unusually, the series did not generate a general champion with no classification system.
The two categories were potential 2014 campaign destinations. Verstappen has tested both machines but he decided to plunge into the most competitive Formula Three Championship – the Europe-wide series – after a promising course in the German Formula Three Cup car.
The younger Verstappen won the race for the same Van Amersfoort team that his father had raced for once at his second F3 weekend. Soon after he struck a rich vein of shape, and scored six consecutive victories at Spa-Francorchamps and the Norisring.
In the prestigious F3 Masters in Zandvoort, a seventh straight win was won, but it didn’t count towards the championship. Lotus-backed rival Esteban Ocon of Verstappen kept his lead in the rating of the drivers by 74 points, partly because of his car’s superior reliability. Ocon pulled more than 100 clear points in Moscow with his own hat trick the following weekend.
