MercyMe is a contemporary Christian music band from Edmond, Oklahoma, United States.
Before joining with INO Records in 2001, the band started in 1994 and released six independent albums. The group’s breakthrough came with the crossover single “I Can Only Imagine,” which helped their debut album, Almost There, achieve triple platinum status. Since then, the band has released eight more studio albums (six of which have been certified gold) as well as a best hits collection, totaling ten albums. The band has also had 13 top 5 singles on the Billboard Christian Songs chart in a row, with seven of them reaching No. 1. MercyMe has been nominated for many Grammy Awards and has won eight Dove Awards.
Following an invitation from his youth pastor, singer Bart Millard met pianist James Phillip Bryson in Lakeland, Florida. On a vacation to Europe, they each headed a praise squad. They both felt compelled to pursue music full-time. They were eventually joined by guitarist Michael John Scheuchzer, and they relocated to Oklahoma City. The group was founded at Edmond, Oklahoma’s Henderson Hills Baptist Church in 1994.
In an old abandoned day-care centre, the trio set up a studio and a “living space.” Later, bassist Nathan Cochran and drummer Robby Shaffer joined the band, and they helped the group release six indie albums until signing with INO Records in 2001. Unlike their first three major label albums, their early indie releases leaned more heavily on rock rhythms. Millard came up with the moniker “MercyMe” while working as a youth ministry intern in Florida. Millard’s grandmother, concerned that her grandson was at home whenever she called, would exclaim, “Well mercy me, why don’t you find a real job?”
Following the publication of Undone in 2004, the band decided to take some time off before publishing their next big album, so they chose to concentrate on a Christmas album. On September 27, 2005, The Christmas Sessions was recorded and released. Seven tracks from the album charted in the top 40 of the Christian Singles chart (one at No. 1 and two others in the top ten), as well as four songs in the top 40 of the Adult Contemporary list (with one peaking in the top 10). The album reached number 64 on the Billboard 200 and number three on the Christian Songs list.
The Generous Mr. Lovewell, MercyMe’s sixth studio album, was released on May 4, 2010. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Christian Albums list (MercyMe’s highest debut to date and first top 5 album on the chart). The album’s three songs – “All of Creation,” “Beautiful,” and “Move” – all achieved number one on the Christian Songs chart and are loosely related to the self-titled character. MercyMe was asked to perform the national anthem at a Dallas Cowboys game after wrapping off their “The Generous Mr. Lovewell” tour.
