Michael Ashley Ball OBE is a well-known English singer, presenter, and actor. He was born on June 27, 1962 in England. After making his debut as Marius Pontmercy in the first London production of Les Misérables in 1985, he went on to feature in The Phantom of the Opera in 1987 in the role of Raoul. He made his debut on the West End in 1985. The song “Love Changes Everything” was taken from the musical Aspects of Love, in which he played the role of Alex, and it propelled him to the number two spot on the UK Singles Chart in 1989.
Both in London and on Broadway, he portrayed the part of the actor. It is now his 4th album to reach number one in the UK, with Coming Home to You being his most recent number-one album. Although he had never had singing classes, he learned to sing as a child by singing along to music, such as songs by Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, and Frank Sinatra. He has never received any formal training in singing.
Because his parents believed that sending him to Plymouth College, an independent boarding school, would provide him with a quality education, they enrolled him there when he was 11. However, this made him feel miserable since he could not integrate well into the school’s social, intellectual, and athletic atmosphere then. Sunday morning saw him in St. Andrew’s church with the rest of the junior boarders, where he participated in the Pathfinder bible study group.
During one of the summers, he spent time at the Pathfinder camp on the island of Jersey. When Ball was a young boy, around 14 years old, he saw a play of King Lear by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre that had an impression on him. His father brought him to see shows during school vacations since Ball was interested in the theater, and one of these productions was King Lear at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
He started by participating in a youth theater, ultimately leading him to pursue drama at the Guildford School of Acting. There, he discovered an atmosphere conducive to his growth as an actor. When he was a student, he and a female student companion would spend their Saturdays in Guildford town busking to earn some more spending money. In 1984, he received his diploma. Soon after his certificate, Ball launched his career as a singer with lightning speed.
His maternal grandmother had a musical ear and was pleased with Ball’s early vocal abilities. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack just one week before Ball made his debut in The Pirates of Penzance. After graduating from theatre school in 1984, Ball’s first role was in the musical Godspell, performed at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Subsequently, he spent a few months performing in regional theater in Basingstoke. Still, his first significant break was a starring role in a production of The Pirates of Penzance, which was shown at the Manchester Opera House.
During an open audition, he was chosen from around 600 hopefuls who formed a line to participate in interviews, including singing, acting, and dancing, which took place in three distinct rooms. His next significant part came when Cameron Mackintosh cast him as Marius in the original London production of Les Misérables. Unfortunately, he became ill with glandular fever. He had to miss work for six or seven weeks to recuperate from tonsillitis and post-viral tiredness that came along with it.
When he returned to work, he was still suffering from weariness, and he started having panic attacks while performing. These episodes consisted of overpowering anxiousness, a quick pulse, perspiration, and issues with eyesight. These began to occur at other times, such as while he was heading to work. After leaving Les Miserables, he spent most of the subsequent nine months living alone in his apartment while experiencing feelings of depression. He did not seek treatment for his condition and abandoned Les Miserables.
Despite Ball’s struggles with nervousness, Thames Television allowed him to perform at the Miss England competition, which was shown live on television. His performance was successful. After seeing a tape of the event later, he realized that no one would have been able to tell how tense he was, and as a result, he felt less concerned about his anxiety issue.
Around the same time, Cameron Mackintosh asked Ball to play Raoul in the second casting of The Phantom of the Opera in London. This casting was necessary because Michael Crawford, who played the Phantom, and Steve Barton, who played Raoul, left the London show to appear in the Broadway production in New York City. Mackintosh believed that Ball would be put under manageable strain in his role as Raoul and that he was the ideal candidate for the character.
Ball portrayed the role of Alex in both the London and New York productions of Aspects of Love. He also played Giorgio in the production of Stephen Sondheim’s Passion, which was shown in London. In November 2005, Ball returned to Broadway in the part of Count Fosco in The Woman in White, a production that had originated on the West End in London. However, he was compelled to quit the play due to a viral illness purportedly induced by the fat suit that was necessary for the part. According to reports, this caused Ball’s body temperature to rise by several degrees while performing in the show.
Ball debuted at the New York City Opera in September 2005, performing the role of Reginald Bunthorne in Patience by Gilbert and Sullivan. As a result of the sickness that forced him to abandon his Broadway role in The Woman in White, he was forced to spend the first three months of 2006 completely resting his voice. By the middle of July, Ball had already participated in the celebration performance of “The Rocky Horror Show” at the Royal Court Theatre.
He performed the central part in Kismet for the ENO in June and July of 2007, and he appeared on the Richard & Judy show on Channel 4 on June 22, 2007, to promote the play. After that, he performed as a solo artist for the BBC’s ‘Musical Theatre’ Prom on August 27, 2007, in London’s Royal Albert Hall. The event was met with controversy.
