A saint of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, Premanand Swami lived from 1784 to 1855 and was considered one of Swaminarayan’s Paramahansa. Hathiram was the name given to Premanand Swami at the time of his birth in 1784 in the town of Ogan, Viramgam, by his Hindu (Brahmin) parents. While he was still a child, his parents gave up on him and left. In 1784 CE, Premanand Swami was born into a Sathodara Nagar Brahmin family in a hamlet close to Nadiad (however, a school of thought maintains that he was born in the village Dora, close to Bharuch) (Samvat 1840).
His mother was beautiful, but the others despised and mocked his father because they believed he was insane. They immediately began to spread rumors about the mother after he was born. They said, “This kid is not the mother’s legitimate offspring; thus, she must either disown him or put him to death.” Our household will not tolerate such behavior in any form. This resulted in a significant deal of suffering for the mother. Yet, to appease the people around her, she walked out of the hamlet early one morning while holding the infant to her bosom, and then she abandoned the child in the hollow of a tree.
When some time had passed, a caretaker who was walking by unexpectedly saw the toddler lying in the tree hole. When he first saw the kid, he was overcome with happiness. He reasoned, “I do not have a kid of my own; this is God’s gift to me.” He brought the infant inside and told his wife, “Look at this,” as he showed her the baby. This kid has been sent to us by God. Let us celebrate.” After saying those remarks, he returned the infant to his wife and left the room. When some time had passed, this carder went to Jetpur with his son, who was eleven years old at the time of their trip. At that period, Ramanand Swami was in the process of passing the leadership of the Sampraday on to his spiritual successor, Sahajanand Swami.
A massive feast was held to commemorate Sahajanand Swami’s spiritual elevation to the position of king. Hundreds of worshippers around the nation had made their way there to pay their respects. The carder couldn’t help but feel grateful that he was able to attend this Hindu celebration and see it firsthand. On the coronation day, Sahajanand Swami rode through the town streets in a vibrant parade, which began with him mounting a horse. The carder showed up there as well to see the sacred procession. Also watching was his kid, who did so while clinging to the hand of his foster father.
The little child broke free and went through the crowded area to reach the horse being ridden by Sahajanand Swami. He grabbed the stirrup and began strolling next to the horse as it trotted ahead. Shriji Maharaj saw the little lad as he walked along the equine’s side while clutching the stirrup. The youngster continued to walk through the town until the procession ended at the darbar of Unnad Khachar. The ashram of Ramanand Swami may be found right in the middle of Unnad Khachar’s darbar.
The parade ended at this location, and as Sahajanand Swami dismounted from his horse, he walked straight into the ashram. The little youngster was so worn out that he quickly slept off while sitting on the stairs of the ashram. When some time had passed, Maharaj suddenly recalled the youngster. He went outside to seek at him and saw him dozing on the stairs. When the child finally awakened, Maharaj gently patted his head and brought him food and drink. Meanwhile, his father and several other relatives went there to find the missing boy. The sight of his kid brought him a great deal of joy.
He introduced Maharaj to his kid and said that he was on his way back home. Even after Maharaj had approved, the youngster was adamant about not moving from his position. The father did all in his power to get the youngster to go home with him; he even threatened to beat him, but the boy was adamant about not going with his father. Ultimately, the father conceded and walked away, thinking, “After all, he was not my son.” After then, Shriji Maharaj inquired of the young man, “What have you chosen?” The little child responded, “I want to remain with you.” The all-knowing Maharaj was aware of his previous samskara, and because of this, he instructed him to go to Ujjain.

In obedience to Shriji Maharaj’s instruction, the young man traveled to Ujjain and found his way to the location of the music school there. The head of the school was curious about the reason for his visit and asked him what it was. The young man voiced his wish to remain in that location. Thus, he took a job working as a servant. The young man began his work in the organization with zeal and passion. The youngster impressed the music instructor, so the teacher gave him some music lessons.
After a short period, the little kid could achieve proficiency in vocal and instrumental music thanks to specific intrinsic abilities and the blessings of Shriji Maharaj. One day, he had a startling recollection of Maharaj. He left Ujjain to find Maharaj, and following his intuition, he found his way to Gadhada. After recognizing him, Maharaj greeted him with a warm hug. In 1814 CE (Samvat 1870), he gave the little kid diksha and the name “Nijbodhanand.” He had previously kept the boy with him for some time. By the directives of Maharaj, he also gained some knowledge of Sanskrit.
Once, Maharaj requested him to write kirtans when he was in his presence and summoned him there. By the instructions given by Maharaj, he began writing kirtans even though he had no training in the pineal branch of music. He carefully examined every feature of Maharaj’s body, and the very first kirtan he ever produced was a lovely song describing the murti of Maharaj. At hearing it, Maharaj felt an overwhelming sense of contentment. But, the term “Nijbodhanand,” which appeared towards the conclusion of the kirtan, did not rhyme correctly. Maharaj responded, “Just as Brahma, Mukta, and Nishkula rhyme correctly, “Prema” will likewise rhyme.
Hence, from today, everyone will call you “Premanand.” During one of the kirtans, he referred to Chandrasakhi, one of Shri Krishna’s gopis. Because of his premlakshana bhakti, which translates to “deep passion and devotion,” Maharaj gave him the name “Premsakhi” as a sign of his admiration and respect. Maharaj gave him instructions to compose kirtans utilizing both of these names. Once, on the occasion of Ashadh sud 11 (Devpodhi Ekadashi), Maharaj offered special vows to be fulfilled through the auspicious charms. These vows were to be followed exactly as they were written.
Premanand Swami sprang to his feet and vowed, “O Maharaj! I solemnly swear to write eight pads in honor of your murti daily. When Maharaj heard that he was about to take such a challenging oath, he was excited. In the same manner that Premanand Swami’s heart overflowed with passion and devotion for Maharaj, Maharaj never failed to shower him with the most cherished of his blessings. Even he enjoyed listening to him sing religious tunes occasionally. Once, as it was late in the winter season, Premanand Swami got out his sarangi and began singing.
The air was filled with the sounds of the sarangi and his voice, which had a sarangi-like quality. The Akshar Ordi was inundated with the musical lyrics of the bhajan sung in honor of Maharaj. The pious music moved Maharaj, and despite the cold, he walked to the place where Premanand Swami was singing and stood silently behind him, listening to him sing kirtans with the most excellent attention. Premanand Swami, who had been engaged in the heavenly murti of Maharaj, kept singing bhajan after bhajan when the murti was brought into the room.
The freezing night of winter came to an end. As soon as he laid down his sarangi and stopped singing at daybreak, he was greeted by Maharaj’s calming and compassionate voice. I have spent the entire night listening to your beautiful kirtans; Premanand Swami spun around and fell at the feet of Maharaj, saying, “O Merciful Maharaj, how is it that you are here?” I have been standing here listening to your kirtans. Yet I feel like listening to more.” Hearing Maharaj speak so highly of him as a person caused Premanand Swami to experience profound emotion.
The dedication and poetry of Premanand Swami were held in very high esteem by Maharaj. He would shower supernatural blessings onto him in a variety of different ways. Once upon a time, Maharaj traveled to Kutch accompanied by many sadhus. As they arrived at this spot, Maharaj wrapped his arm around Premanand Swami and requested him to do the same as they made their way through the market in Bhuj while singing kirtans. Premanand Swami sang one line, and Maharaj sang the next. Thus, Maharaj showered him with many such one-of-a-kind recollections using such holy deeds.
At one point, the Nawab of Junagadh could attend the Swaminarayan Temple and listen to Premanand Swami perform. He thought that “singing from such a profound place in one’s soul is not conceivable anyplace in the world.” When some time passed, Gwalior musicians went to Nawab’s court to perform the dhrupad rag. He told them, “After hearing Premanand, a sadhu of Swaminarayan, I no longer listen to anybody else’s music.” His singing is unparalleled in the history of the globe.
Thus, the musicians traveled to Gadhada to meet with Maharaj. They arrived at Dada Khachar’s darbar at about noon. The gathering was ready to break apart into its parts.
