In the Irish village of Moate, Westmeath County, on November 29th, 1951. Lynam played the saxophone in a local band called the Merrymen when he was a student. At the outset of his career, he was profoundly impressed by the recordings of George Jones and Buck Owens, and he faithfully imitated their vocal techniques. The reason being, he aspired to achieve the same level of success as them. We hoped that by taking this step, our reputation would rise in the neighborhood. He joined the band the Hillbillies in 1969 and quickly found himself shouldering the role of a lead singer. Frontmen for the band at the time included not only Billy Condon but also Kevin Sheeran, the band’s guitarist.

Sooner or later, both of these gifted players would join Daniel O’Donnell’s band. His succeeding number-one singles, “Sweet Rosie Jones” and “Gypsy Jo And Me,” solidified his status as a pioneer of Irish country music. His performance of “Busted” shot him to fame in 1970, and his succeeding hits “Sweet Rosie Jones” and “Gypsy Jo And Me” also made him a household name. After Lynam and the band played at the Wembley Festival in London in 1971, they were invited to play in a number of other festivals and concerts across the UK.  The British Country Music Association hailed them as “the greatest European pair,” and they went on to have a lot of success at the Wembley Festival in that same year, 1974.

The group entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1975. They recorded two albums together, with the songs “You’re the One I Can’t Live Without” and “My Elusive Dreams” both being hits in Ireland. Together, as a duo, they also achieved phenomenal success in the recording industry. Together, they recorded both of these songs. In 1974, Lynam made the trek to Nashville, Tennessee to make his debut studio album.

It was in the USA where the tracks for this album were laid down. Moate native Ray Lynam and former “The Saturdays” member Ana Healy are set to perform a duet on this year’s Christmas Carol event on RTÉ One. The program will air at 9:10 p.m. on Christmas Eve on RTE 1. Since American folk artist John Prime passed away in April of this year, the upcoming event will serve as a tribute to his memory. This year, Mary Kennedy and Ruth Smith host a Carols show like no other, including a star-studded lineup of musicians from all around the country performing classic and modern takes on Christmas carols.

An ode to American folk singer John Prine is being paid in a duet by Moate native Ray Lynam and Molly Healy, a country icon and pop sensation. Mary Kennedy and Ruth Smith will host the event, which will feature appearances by YouTube sensation Allie Sherlock, as well as Irish celebrities Lisa Hannigan, Imelda May, Loam, Celine Byrne, Mick Flannery, and Susan O’Neill. Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, Micheal o’ Muircheartaigh, and Donnas Vuma also weigh in on what it means to celebrate Christmas at home in light of a year that has both brought us closer together and further apart.

Traditional and modern carols will be performed by the Manoah University Chamber Choir, the Choir of the National Seminary, Scholar Gregorian, and the RTÉ Cor na nogs, all of whom have not been able to sing together previously. No broadcast of “Carols” would be complete without the musical talents of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. A rebroadcast of Christmas at Home will air on television at 7.20 am on Christmas Day, and on the radio at 1.15 pm on RTE Radio 1.

He returned to the recording studio in the early 1980s to create an album of Music Man.  He and Begley reunited to record an album for Ritz while Lynam was enjoying success in the UK with his cover of “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile,” David Allan Coe’s 1984 number-one hit single. Since then, he has continued to perform actively, cementing his status as a major player in the Irish and British country music scenes. Earlier in his career, American country performers like George Jones and Merle Haggard were a major influence on Lynam, and their styles informed his own singing voice. Merle Haggard and Merle Jones are two of these artists.

With his renditions of “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “If We’re Not Back in Love by Monday,” two of Ireland’s most successful songs of the 1970s and 1980s, he was able to break into the country’s mainstream charts. Country music listeners agree that Ray Lynam’s singing is the only thing Ireland has ever produced that sounds like it was made in Nashville. The vast majority of those who listen to country music agree with this statement. The guy from Westmeath laughs at such a statement in his own understated way, saying that after more than forty years in the music industry, he’s simply thrilled to still be doing what he’s always wanted to do: singing songs and making people happy. It’s been over forty years since he first started doing this.

We had arranged to meet for coffee in Wexford town on a calm weeknight, and so far, 2016 has been treating the always-pleasant Ray quite well. He and his longtime performing partner Philomena Begley have been touring with Mike Denver all through the month of January, following the success of the reunited Hillbilly tour at the end of 2015. Since the two first began working together, Philomena Begley has been Mike Denver’s musical partner. This is a working relationship that will continue throughout the months of February and March. He goes on to say, “Mike and I have been great friends for a long time, and it has been a lot of fun playing together, in fact, all of us who perform on the Irish country circuit are close friends.” It was more or less on the whim of the moment, but Phil and I did wind up singing a duet together at Mike’s wedding.

Ray Lynam has spent the better part of the last four decades immersed in the performing arts, which has had a profound effect on his development as a person. He may have been raised in the middle of the country, but music has always held a special place in his heart. Yet, contrary to popular belief, he did not begin his musical career on the guitar but rather the saxophone. He has received numerous honors over his career. He continues, “My father, Patrick, was a baker on the main street in Moate, which is located in Westmeath.” My mom, Nora, was the business brains behind the operation. There were many happy and enjoyable times during my childhood.

She explained that she had practiced the piano on the way to and from school every day. A piano was present in the dwelling. When I go back to my childhood, one of the things that stands out most is the record player that my family possessed. In retrospect, I can pinpoint the exact moment that I first started playing records and have done so continuously ever since. I can still see the player’s expression clearly and vividly in my mind, even at this late hour. It was one of those skyscrapers, and its turntable was located in a precarious spot at the building’s peak. I like standing on the chair to play the LPs while listening to Radio Luxembourg.
