A native Californian, Rhonda Fleming attended public and private schools in Beverly Hills. Harold Cheverton Louis was her dad (1896-1951). Her mother, Effie Olivia Graham (1891-1985), was a renowned New York model and actress. She appeared in over 40 movies, including Alfred Hitchcock’s David O. Selznick’s Spellbound (1945), Jacques Tourneur’s Out of the Past (1947) and Robert Siodmak’s The Spiral Staircase, respectively (1946). One time in one of her films, a cameraman remarked how beautiful he was so struck that, as a gag, he tried to intentionally photograph her badly, he was amazed to find out that no matter how deliberately he was bugging it, it still seemed stunning.
Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, Glenn Ford, Burt Lancaster, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Rock Hudson and Ronald Reagan were among their co-stars over the years (with whom she made four films). In addition to film pictures, Fleming made her Broadway debut in “The Women” by Clare Boothe Luce, tried “Lalumerole “‘s in “Kismet” at the Los Angeles Music Center, and toured in “The Boyfriend” on “Madame Dubonnet.” At the opening of the Tropicana Hotel’s showroom, she made her musical stage debut in Las Vegas. Later on, at the Hollywood Bowl, she performed at a one-woman concert with compositions by Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. She also played with Skitch Henderson on a national ten-week concert tour featuring George Gershwin’s music. Her guest appearance includes Wagon Train (1957), Police Woman (1974), The Love Boat (1977), Last Hours Before Morning (1975) and McMillan & Wife two-hour special (1971). Waiting for the Wind (1991) reassembled her with Robert Mitchum, former co-star.
Twenty-three years ago, she married Ted Mann, a producer and chairman of Mann Theatres, in private life, until his death in January 2001. ARCS (ARCS) is a member and support for Childhelp USA, a Life Associate from Pepperdine University, a Lifetime Member of Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation, a Founding Member, French Foundation For Alzheimer Research, a Benefactor of Los Angeles Music Center, and a Member of the Board of Directors of Center Blue Ribbon. She is a member of the Olive Crest Treatment Center Advisory Board for Abused Children and a trustee for World Opportunities International. She helped build the Jerusalem Film Institute in Israel together with her husband. She is also a member of the UCLA Foundation board of trustees and a member of the Revlon/UCLA Women’s Health Research Program board of advisers. In addition, she established the Rhonda Fleming Mann Research Fellowship at the City of Hope Hospital, to further advance cancer research and treatment.
In 1991, she and her husband founded the Rhonda Fleming Mann Clinic at UCLA Medical Center for Women’s Comprehensive Care. This clinic offers a range of expert gynaecological and obstetrical treatments for women.This Center fulfils her view of creating a safe and warm place where women cancer patients and their families receive the highest level of mental and emotional care and support for complex practical problems with cancer. In August 1997, the “Reflections” Center opened a unique retail and advisory centre with pergolastics, head coverings, breast prostheses and other products to help men, women and children to cope with the physical changes caused by cancer and its treatments. Clinical, central and shop staff are guided by their conviction that caring, compassion, communication and commitment are essential parts of the healing process.
