Rob Marshall, a famous Hollywood filmmaker who was born in Madison, Wisconsin on October 17, 1960, is no stranger to the world of musical theater. He has also worked as a choreographer in addition to directing. Robert D. Marshall and Anne Marshall are Marshall’s parents. Rob’s dad was a college professor. Thereafter, Rob made the decision to pursue a career in dancing and began appearing in Broadway productions. Later, while performing in “Cats,” he experienced a Slipped Disc. After he improved, he stopped dancing entirely and instead pursued careers as a choreographer and eventually a director.
Rob got his start in the movie business in 1999 with the telemovie “Annie,” which was based on popular music of the same name. This telefilm not only won an Emmy but also generated a tidal wave of positive feedback from fans. After that, he directed the film Chicago (2002). This allowed him to purchase the inexpensive guitar and amplifier set he’d had his eye on. He then went on to teach himself the instrument by repeatedly playing along with albums by Hendrix, T-Rex, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys.
Lyca Sleep, Rob’s first serious band, spun languid, dreamy psychedelic music and toured widely with South, The Warlocks, and Engineers in the year 2000. A later incarnation of Lyca Sleep, Exit Calm, was praised by Mojo for “reclaiming the guitar band as something to have trust in again.” They performed at festivals like Glastonbury, V, and Leeds/Reading, and both of their albums received high marks from critics. After that, they went on a massive tour with support from bands like Doves and The Music. Rob was a loner in rough and tumble, bohemian Hastings on England’s South Coast after the band broke up in 2015 following extended tours of Europe and Japan.
Humanist was inspired by the documentary “The Living Room,” which was about the singer Gavin Clarke, whose manager Rob used to be. Rob was so affected by learning that Gavin had taken his own life the following day that he sat down to write, quickly developing a piece that would later become the germ of an idea for a lofty, ambitious project that tackled the most profound themes of life: death, meaning, and the freedom of the spirit.
Rob Marshall (guitarist of Exit Calm and co-writer of Mark Lanegan’s celebrated “Gargoyle” album) wrote, played, and produced all the music on Humanist, resulting in a whirling Niagara of fuzzed-out guitars, pounding drums, and soaring vocals from artists like Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age), and Mark Gardner (Ride).
Rob’s first solo project and the first music he had ever fully produced, Humanist is also a magnum opus musically, a fully realized and rounded work; he taught himself production while making the record, just as he had done with his signature guitar sound, forging its rich, brooding sound-world on instinct. His work is similarly unpolished, passionate, and original. Rob also performed and recorded practically all of the instrumentation, but he had a vision of the album expanding far beyond a one-man endeavor, expanding its palette and scope by featuring many of the singers he had always respected.
I’ve always loved the art of collaboration; maybe growing up in bands has something to do with that. “I can sing a little, and I do sing on some of the tracks, and I’ve written some of the vocal sections too. So, I gave my manager my early tapes and this silly “wish list” of vocalists I’d always admired.
I was totally prepared for a negative response. To my astonishment, the overwhelming majority of them responded positively. I couldn’t believe it. I was and am now incredibly honored to share the stage with such illustrious musicians.
Mark Lanegan of Queens of the Stone Age was the first to reply, initiating a long and fruitful musical partnership. Mark had never heard of Rob before hearing his music, but he immediately connected with it and decided to contribute to multiple tunes. Later, he inquired of Rob about using any Humanist outtakes on his own album. Rob didn’t, but in a weeklong burst of creativity, he composed and produced six songs for Mark that ended up on their debut album together, “Gargoyle” (2017) on Heavenly Records, which was hailed by Mojo as “A triumph” and by The Guardian as “A bravura statement,” becoming Mark’s most successful album since 2004’s Bubblegum. The songs that sparked Mark and Rob’s friendship are finally available on Humanist, but you can hear their new collaborations on Mark’s upcoming album “Somebody’s Knocking” (Heavenly Records, October 2019).
Mark Lanegan, Mark Gardener (Ride), Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Joel Cadbury (UNKLE), Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics), Carl Hancock Rux (David Holmes, Portishead), and John Robb (The Membranes) are just a few of the artists whose voices can be heard on the album. Rob supplied the completed music and song titles, which suggested the subject matter, and the vocalists responded to these themes with their own lyrics, giving the work unusual richness and scope, giving each individual track on the Humanist debut its own distinctive elements within a unified whole, united by an overarching exploration of the concept of Humanism, or, in Rob’s words, a study of.
Life, death, religion, and being mortal are all topics that need to be discussed. Pondering of the meaning of life and the worth of human relationships from a philosophical perspective… It’s about how people respond to ideas like creationism and evolution, heaven and hell, death, and the afterlife. It’s an album about the importance of keeping optimism alive.
As a result, we have faith in music’s promising future. Humanist is a visceral, cinematic, tripped-out, mesmerizing cacophony of songs, from the thunderous gothic opener “Kingdom” to the cataclysmic finality of “Gospelclosing “‘s notes; from the kraut rock number “English Ghosts” to the out and out rock / post-punk inspired “Skull”; these are songs with gnarled roots, where demonic and angelic impulses collide. Rock anthems and heartfelt songs with a raucous, powerful sound reminiscent of bands like Doves, Killing Joke, UNKLE, and record labels like Factory Records. All of it was a great backdrop for Rob’s signature guitar tone. Whatever its origins, Humanist is exactly what we need: a collection of contrasting, gritty productions in the spirit of Martin Hannett, in which the sounds of Joy Division and Durutti Column clash with the cinema of Sigur Ros.
