Mitt Romney, dressed as Willard, Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, United States) is an American politician who served as governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and afterwards as a senator for Utah from 2019 to. In 2012, he was the Republican Party’s presidential candidate.
Romney was born into one of the most renowned Mormon families as the youngest of four siblings. His father, George Romney, was a successful corporate leader who led American Motors from near bankruptcy to record profits and later served in President Richard M.Romney attended Stanford University in California, but he took a break from his studies in 1966 to go on a 30-month missionary effort in France for the Mormon religion. He was critically injured in a vehicle accident while there, and he returned to the US a few months later. Romney earned a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University in 1971, summa cum laude. In 1975, he graduated from Harvard University with a J.D. and an M.B.A.
Romney then worked as an investment consultant in the private sector. He spent the following 20 years working at Boston-based consulting firm Bain & Company, as well as its investment-focused spin-off, Bain Capital, which he cofounded with Coleman Andrews and Eric Kriss in 1984. Romney amassed a multimillion-dollar fortune during his time at Bain.
Romney ran for the United States Senate in 1994, but lost to Democratic incumbent Ted Kennedy. Romney’s dramatic turnaround of the scandal-plagued 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, recounted in Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games (2004), provided as a springboard for his victorious 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign.
Romney addressed the state’s fiscal challenges after taking office in 2003, enacted universal health insurance for the uninsured, and established a scholarship programme for lower- and middle-income students attending Massachusetts universities. Early in his political career, Romney took centrist positions (for example, during his 1994 campaign against John F. Kennedy, he claimed that gays needed “greater support from the Republican Party” and that “abortion should be safe and legal”), but later in his career, he fashioned himself as a fiscal and social conservative, claiming that his views on such subjects had evolved.
Romney was opposed to homosexual marriage and attempted unsuccessfully to get the issue placed on the ballot after the Massachusetts Supreme Court declared in November 2003 that the denial of marriage licences to same-sex couples was unconstitutional. He did not seek re-election to a second term as governor, and he stepped down in 2007.
In 2008, Romney decided to run for the Republican presidential nomination. His political platform emphasised his accomplishments as governor, as well as his business expertise, and indicated that his governorship might be replicated at the federal level. In August 2007, his candidacy received a boost when he placed first in the Iowa straw poll. Romney, on the other hand, came in second place in both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary in January 2008, losing to Mike Huckabee and John McCain, respectively.
He won the largely uncontested Wyoming caucuses and finished second behind front-runner McCain on Super Tuesday (February 5, 2008). Recognizing the disparity in the number of delegates any contender might claim, Romney called off his candidacy a few days later.
Romney continued to be involved in politics and published the book No Apology: The Case for American Greatness (2010). In June 2011, he announced his intention to run for president again. Romney was widely regarded as the Republican Party’s front-runner at the start of the campaign.
During the following months, however, he struggled to get support among social conservatives, who still saw him as a moderate, and he finished second in crucial primaries, like Ohio’s, to more conservative contenders. Despite this, he was able to unify the Republican Party around his candidacy and gain enough delegates to secure the presidential nomination after the Texas primaries in May 2012. Romney chose Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running partner in August.
