Sharon Gamboa Cuneta Pangilinan is a Filipino actress, singer, and television personality. She was born on January 6, 1966, and her full name is Sharon Gamboa Cuneta-Pangilinan. She has acted in more than 60 movies, hosted more than ten television series, and released more than 40 albums. Because she was the first actress to win the Box Office Queen title five times, she was inducted into the “Box Office Hall of Fame” in 1990. This honor was bestowed upon her. She would claim the record for most Box Office Queen titles, with nine different accolades.

She has been recognized as the “Best Actress” multiple times. She has been nominated for 23 awards throughout her career as an actress, including by the Film Academy of the Philippines, FAMAS, the People’s Choice Awards, the Metro Manila Film Festival, PMPC Star Awards for Movies, KOMOPB Awards, and Gawad Genio Awards, among other notable Filipino award-giving bodies. The year 1996 was especially significant for her because it was the year that she won the title of “Best Actress” from all of the major award-giving bodies in the Philippine entertainment scene, including the PMPC Star Awards for Movies, the Film Academy of the Philippines, the People’s Choice Awards, the FAMAS Awards, and the Gawad Urian. This accomplishment earned her the title of “Grand Slam Year.”

Sharon Cuneta was born on January 6, 1966, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Santa Mesa, Manila. Her parents were Pablo Cuneta (1910–2000), a former mayor of Pasay who was the longest-serving mayor in the Philippines from 1951 to 1998, and Elaine Gamboa (1934–2014), the sister of actress and singer Helen Gamboa. Pablo Cuneta was the longest-serving mayor in the Philippines from 1951 to 1998. Elaine Gamboa was the sister of the actress. Her formative years were spent at San Lorenzo Village, Makati, and then in their family home on Paraiso Street in Dasmarinas Village, also in Makati. Both locations are in Makati.

Cuneta spent her childhood listening to records that were part of her father’s collection. Her mother, Elaine Gamboa, had studied piano at the University of the South’s Conservatory of Music when she was younger. Because of this, when Sha-Sha was a little child, she began taking piano, guitar, flute, and piano classes to widen her musical training and exposure. Cuneta started accompanying her renowned aunt Helen Gamboa to the recording sessions for her television programs when she was three.

She also imitated her Aunt Helen’s singing on Ike Lozada’s program during the Bulilit segment, another of her first genuine appearances on television. Ike Lozada hosted the show. Cuneta made her film debut at the same early age as Rosanna Ortiz and George Estregan in Lovers for Hire, in which she portrayed one of Roderick Paulate’s playmates. The film also starred Rosanna Ortiz and George Estregan. For her primary and secondary studies, Cuneta received her education at St. Paul College in Pasig and the International School in Manila.

Sharon Gamboa Cuneta, then 12 years old, paid her first visit to the location of Vicor Records at 782 Aurora Boulevard in January of 1978. At the time, Vicor Records was located there. Her Uncle Tito Sotto, Vice President of Vicor, invited her to record “Tawag Ng Pag-Ibig,” which he produced for her at Vicor. Shortly after that, she went on television for the first time promoting her song, and it was on the TV program Discorama, which TVJ presented.

During a live interview on Discorama, a younger version of Sharon said, “This is the program I watch weekly.” This is the program that people around the nation tune in to see, and I have no idea if hundreds of thousands or millions of people do so. When it finally dawned on me, I was rendered speechless. The MEGA Treasure Book: Sharon My 40 Years (2018) is set to be released later this year. In May of 1978, Sharon Cuneta released a follow-up single named “Mr. DJ,” which included a song written by Rey Valera. Her producer at Vicor, Tito Sotto, wanted Valera to create a piece that would appeal to the Radio DJs and persuade them to broadcast her record on the air. He wanted Valera to develop a song that would be played on the radio.

Cuneta earned the nickname “DJ’s Pet” as a result of the success of her song “Mr. DJ,” which was a huge hit (which also became the title of her debut LP). Cuneta was honored with her first Gold Record for her performance, and her record company, Vicor Records, went on to release subsequent albums such as “Sharon,” “Sharon Cuneta,” and “High School,” all of which achieved the same degree of commercial success. During the Manila Sound period, Cuneta recorded several more famous singles, such as “Naaalala Ka,” “I-Swing Mo Ako,” “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” and “High School Life.”

All of these songs were hits in their own right. Aside from her work as a music artist, Cuneta also started co-hosting a television variety show with her aunt, Helen Gamboa. The program was broadcast on IBC 13 and was branded C.U.T.E. or Call Us Two for Entertainment. Cuneta was given a chance to record her first George Canseco song, “Tubig at Langis,” in 1980 by her employer at the time at Vicor Music, Boss Vic Del Rosario. Boss Vic Del Rosario recognized Cuneta’s commercial success as a young singer and wanted to reward her. This song was used as the theme for the movie of the same name, directed by Danny Zialcita and starring Vilma Santos.

The same year, “Langis at Tubig” was selected as an official entry for the Cebu Film Festival. The production company also commissioned a float for the Sinulog Festival procession. Only the director, Danny Zialcita, and the producer of Singing Silangan, Ernie Rojas, were there. No one else was there. Due to the fact that Vilma Santos, who played the leading role in the film, was expecting her first child at the time, none of the film’s stars could attend this event in Cebu. Singing Silangan approached Boss Vic Del Rosario and requested permission to invite the young Sharon Cuneta, who had sung the theme song, to ride with them on the float.

After receiving permission from Boss Vic, Cuneta traveled to Cebu with her mother, Elaine Cuneta, at her side. “Both my mother and I climbed on the float. We made our way to Cebu, and it was my very first trip there. As soon as I stepped foot on the float and it began to move, I was astounded by the other passengers’ responses that they were familiar with me. I felt overwhelming love coming at me like a barrage of arrows. The sensation is beyond my ability to describe. I was already 14 years old at that point. After two years of singing, a seasoned performer (laughs).

During the Sinulog Festival Float Ride that took place on the same day as the Cebu Film Festival, Director Danny Zialcita approached Cuneta with an offer to have her star in a forthcoming film. After some convincing, her parents decided to have a meeting with Danny Zialcita. Silangan unhesitatingly agreed to pay the requested quantity of money, despite the outrageously high charge being requested. “Ok so. Call”. That completed the exercise. Zialcita promised that she would turn herself into a celebrity if she did what she asked. It was an obligation on my part, a pledge that I had made to her.

The discussion turned to the protagonist of the story. The question was posed to me by Direk Danny: “Who would you like to play your leading man?” I responded that I would rather hear someone say anything else but Gabby Concepcion. It turned out that Gabby Concepcion was the only one accessible.”Cuneta made her debut in the leading role in the feature film Dear Heart. She was coupled with Gabby Concepcion, a Close-Up model at the time and a heartthrob for Regal Films in the 1980s. The Dear project Heart was a success and opened the door to opportunities for further cooperation. As a direct result of the movie Dear Heart’s financial success, a sequel was developed. Viva Films was founded by Mayor Pablo Cuneta and Vic Del Rosario due to Singing Silangan’s inability to produce a subsequent film due to a lack of financial resources.

Viva Films’ first production was a collaboration between the two men. P.S. I Love You was Viva Films’ first feature film, released on November 12, 1981. The film starred both Sharon Cuneta and Rosie Concepcion. The movie was a commercial success, followed by another film that Sharon and Gabby had worked on together called My Only Love (1982). From 1982 to 1983, Cuneta co-starred with several starring males, including Miguel Rodriguez (in Love Again), Rowell Santiago (in Cross My Heart and Friends in Love), and William Martinez (in Forgive and Forget). As a result, she was known as the Ms. RP Movies during those years.

Cuneta starred in three critically acclaimed and commercially successful melodramas in 1984: Sa Hirap at Ginhawa, Bukas, Luluhod, And Mga Tala, and Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin Ragudo. These films contributed to Cuneta’s eventual anointing as the Box Office Queen of RP Movies in 1984. In addition, Sharon Cuneta presented a two-night spectacular performance at the Araneta Coliseum on July 20 and 21, 1984, dubbed Sharon Solo with the Boys. The show was a sellout on both nights, and Aliw Awards recognized Cuneta as the year’s Most Outstanding Female Concert Hall Act.

Cuneta, Christopher de Leon, and Cherie Gil starred in the 1985 film adaptation of Bituing Walang Ningning, which was initially a passion project of the late Mina Aragon-del Rosario and was produced by Viva Films. Cuneta was crowned as 1985’s Box Office Queen of RP Movies and “Bida sa Takilya,” which was granted at the 1986 FAMAS Awards. The picture was released on Valentine’s Day in 1985 and was a triumph at the box office. Because of her consistent success at the box office that year, the media began referring to her as a “Megastar” during that period.

FAMAS and the Film Academy of the Philippines recognized Cuneta as the year’s best actress for her work in Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin (1984), for which she received a prize. Cuneta also won the award for Sa Hirap at Ginhawa (1987).She starred in three major movies in 1986, continuing her run of successful films: Nakagapos Na Puso (with Lorna Tolentino), Captain Barbell (in which she played a cameo role as Darna), and Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas (with Cherie Gil and Dina Bonnevie). The latter film earned her the title of Box Office Queen of RP Movies for 1986.
