Stephanie Sigman is a Mexican-American actress who has appeared in a number of films. Miss Bala, a Mexican crime thriller film released in 2011, was her breakout role. Pioneer (2013), Spectre (2015), Going Under (2016), and Annabelle: Creation are among her other credits (2017). Sigman appeared in the first and second seasons of both Narcos (2015) and S.W.A.T (2017) on television.
Sigman was born to a Mexican mother and an American father, Lee Sigman, a New York Yankees scout from Kansas, in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico. Her father is a citizen of the United States. She and her husband Brian Andrew Mendoza revealed in June 2019 that they are expecting their first child. Later in 2019, the child, a son, was born.
Sigman began her acting career on Mexican television before starring in her first film, Rio de Oro. Miss Bala, a Mexican crime drama film, featured her in the major role of Laura Guerrero in 2011. The film was chosen as Mexico’s entry for the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, although it did not make the final shortlist. In 2011, Sigman was nominated for a Dublin Film Critics’ Circle Award for her film performance. She starred as Catalina Aguado in the Canadian documentary film Flight of the Butterflies the following year. Sigman appeared in the Norwegian thriller Pioneer in 2013.
In 2013, Sigman starred alongside Bryan Greenberg in the USA Network drama pilot The Arrangement. It was not ordered to be made into a series. She was cast in a recurring role on the FX criminal drama series The Bridge later that year. She also appeared in the Arctic Monkeys’ “Snap Out of It” music video in 2014. In the Netflix crime drama Narcos, Sigman portrayed Valeria Vélez, a character based on Virginia Vallejo.
Sigman made her acting debut in the James Bond film Spectre in 2015, becoming the second Mexican actress to play a Bond girl, following Linda Christian’s portrayal of Valerie Mathis in the 1954 TV adaptation of Casino Royale. She went on to star in the action comedy Going Under and the war film War on Everyone. During the second season of John Ridley’s ABC anthology drama series American Crime, Sigman had a recurring role as Monica Ava. In the ABC detective drama pilot Presence, Ridley cast Sigman in the starring role as Presence Foster, a former Army veteran who finds herself as an unlicensed Private Investigator.
