Somers later wrote a series of self-help books regarding bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, including Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones (2006). She has two autobiographies, four diet books, and a poetry collection under her belt.
Somers has been chastised for her opinions on a variety of medical issues, as well as her support for the Wiley Protocol, which has been branded “scientifically untested and harmful.” The American Cancer Society has criticised her for promoting complementary and alternative cancer treatments.
Somers was the third of four children born into an Irish-American Catholic household in San Bruno, California. Marion Elizabeth (née Turner), Marion’s mother, was a medical secretary, and Francis Mahoney, her father, was a labourer and gardener. Suzanne’s father became an alcoholic when she was six years old. Somers’ father would humiliate her by calling her names.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Somers began appearing in modest roles (including on various talk shows promoting her book of poetry, and bit parts in movies, such as the “Blonde in the white Thunderbird” in American Graffiti, and an episode of the American version of the sitcom Lotsa Luck as the femme fatale in the early 1970s). She also had an uncredited part as a topless “pool girl” in Magnum Force in 1973 and appeared in The Rockford Files in 1974. She also appeared as a passenger in the first episode of The Love Boat and as a guest star in a 1976 episode of One Day at a Time. In 1977, she won her most recognised role on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company as the sassy blonde “Chrissy Snow.” She also appeared with her husband Alan Hamel on Tattletales and was a celebrity panellist on Match Game that year.
In January 1977, Somers landed a role on ABC’s Three’s Company. Somers was suggested by ABC president Fred Silverman, who had seen her on the Tonight Show, after actresses Suzanne Zenor and Susan Lanier failed to convince producers during the first two test pilots. She was auditioned and hired the day before the third and final pilot began taping. Chrissy Snow, a stereotyped dumb blonde working as an office secretary, was the character she played.
The comedy of errors stars John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt as two single ladies living with a single male who claims to be gay in order to get around the landlord’s rules barring single men sharing an apartment with single women. The show was a ratings hit right away, and a short-lived spin-off series was created (starring Norman Fell and Audra Lindley). Somers became a fan favourite, with the media hailing her as the show’s breakout star and establishing her as a prominent sex symbol of the time. She was widely credited with making the show a global sensation.
Somers returned to network television in 1990, largely for ABC, in a series of guest appearances and made-for-TV features. Lorimar Television and Miller-Boyett Productions, who were developing a new sitcom, took notice of her roles in these films, which included the film Rich Men, Single Women. Somers co-starred in the film with Heather Locklear, who unwittingly drew the attention of both production firms to Somers as a result of Locklear’s leading performance in Lorimar’s and Miller/Going Boyett’s Places. Lorimar was almost pleading with Somers to return, as they were the only ones who had created She’s the Sheriff.
