The Ray D’Arcy Show is the name given to two different versions of a radio show presented by Ray D’Arcy, which was first broadcast on Irish commercial radio station Today FM from the late 1990s until 2014, before shifting in February 2015 to Raidió Teilifs Éireann-owned radio station RTÉ Radio 1. The show airs every weekday afternoon (it used to air from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. between the late 1990s and 2014).
The original mid-morning radio show competed with Gerry Ryan (and his successor Ryan Tubridy) on RTÉ 2fm, Pat Kenny on RTÉ Radio 1 (and his successor Sean O’Rourke) on RTÉ Radio 1 (and his successor Sean O’Rourke) on Newstalk, and Tom Dunnea on Newstalk (and his successor Pat Kenny).
While presenting that edition of the show in the 2000s, D’Arcy received three Meteor Awards in a row for “Best National DJ.” Jenny Kelly, Will Hanafin, and Mairead Farrell, the production crew, were heavily featured, with Kelly best known for her monthly Fix-it Friday segment and Farrell for her daily “Odd-One-Out Quiz.” Maeve Higgins, Quentin Fottrell, Conor Pope, Pixie McKenna, and Arthur Murphy were among the guests on The Ray D’Arcy Show (morning edition).
D’Arcy moved to Today FM in the late 1990s. He took over Tim Kelly’s mid-morning show, which aired from 10:00 to 12:45 a.m. This time slot was then shifted from 9:00 to 12:00, putting it in direct competition with The Gerry Ryan Show on RTÉ 2fm. The Ray D’Arcy Show is credited with establishing the professional career of comedian Maeve Higgins, who auditioned for the show’s nationwide competition in February 2004.
Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Myleene Klass, Dylan Moran, Trinny and Susannah[6] Dermot O’Leary, Anne Doyle, and Miriam O’Callaghan were among the guests during the show’s prime.
Jenny Kelly, Mairéad Farrell, and Will Hanafin, D’Arcy’s production team, once performed a spoof version of the OK Go hit “Here It Goes Again” in D’Arcy’s back garden in freezing temperatures. A petition for Amhrán na bhFiann to be sung following Ireland’s Call in the 2007 Rugby World Cup was included on the television in 2007.
Nude portraits of the Taoiseach were placed in the National Gallery of Ireland and the Royal Hibernian Academy’s gallery on the weekend of March 21–22, 2009, by an unnamed person. The artist emailed the show anonymously, claiming credit for the paintings’ production but not their hanging. Garda raided the Today FM studios after the paintings were placed, and producer Will Hanafin was ordered to hand over the emails alleging immorality, provocation, and criminal damage. Without a warrant, Hanafin refused to hand up the emails.
Ryan Tubridy’s interview with British chef Gordon Ramsay on The Late Late Show in late 2009 sparked controversy in the Irish media when Ramsay made personal remarks about Tubridy’s appearance. Tubridy’s ears were compared to Dumbo’s by Ramsay, who said: “Take a look at those things as you descend the stairwell. I’m astonished you were able to get in “..
The “Odd-One-Out Quiz” was broadcast three times each day and fifteen times per week on the half-hour of every hour the show was on the air. Over the course of thirty seconds, D’Arcy asked a phone-in contestant a series of questions, each involving three things, one of which would be the odd one out. Two consonants plus a vowel is a common example. Although D’Arcy was usually generous in his delivery and would often repeat questions after the stipulated time had elapsed, the fast-paced delivery was usually enough to unhinge the competitor. Listeners were requested to enter if they met a specific and relevant theme that changed everyday, such as having an interesting pet, being a member of the hairless community, or supermarket customers who had an accident.
