Tina Turner (born November 26, 1939) is a Swiss singer, songwriter, and actress of American descent. She rose to notoriety as the lead singer of Ike & Tina Turner before starting a successful solo career. She is widely referred to as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
Turner debuted in 1957 with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. In 1958, she released her first single, “Boxtop,” under the moniker Little Ann. Tina Turner made her debut in 1960 with the classic track “A Fool in Love.” The duo went on to become “one of history’s most fearsome live performances.” Before disbanding in 1976, they had singles like “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” “River Deep – Mountain High,” the Grammy-winning “Proud Mary,” and “Nutbush City Limits.”
Turner made “one of the greatest comebacks in music history” in the 1980s. Her hit song “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year She was the oldest female solo artist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, at the age of 44. “Better Be Good to Me,” “Private Dancer,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome”),” “Typical Male,” “The Best,” “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” and “GoldenEye” continued her chart success. She set a Guinness World Record for the largest paying crowd for a solo act (180,000) during her Break Every Rule World Tour in 1988. Turner also appeared in Tommy (1975), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Last Action Hero (1993). What’s Love Got to Do with It was released in 1993, based on her autobiography I, Tina: My Life Story. Turner announced her retirement in 2009 after finishing her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, which was one of the most successful tours of all time.
Bullock and her sister began frequenting St. Louis and East St. Louis nightclubs. At the Manhattan Club in East St. Louis, she first watched Ike Turner and his band the Kings of Rhythm perform. Bullock was blown away by his abilities, claiming that she “nearly went into a trance” while watching him perform. Despite the fact that few women had ever sung with Turner, she requested him to let her join his band. Turner promised to call her, but he never did. During an interlude in 1957, she snatched the microphone from Kings of Rhythm drummer Eugene Washington and sang the B.B. King blues classic “You Know I Love You.” Turner inquired whether she knew any other songs after hearing her sing. She sang the remainder of the night and joined his band as a featured vocalist. He taught her the finer qualities of vocal control and performance throughout this time. Bullock’s first single, “Boxtop,” was released in 1958 under the moniker Little Ann. Along with Ike and fellow Kings of Rhythm singer Carlson Oliver, she is listed as a vocalist on the album.
