American Christian hip-hop music producer, songwriter, vocalist, and recording artist TobyMac is known simply as TobyMac. Toby’s songs are a welcome exception, especially given the consensus that Christian music does not enjoy the same popularity as conventional hip-hop music. Toby was nurtured in a traditional Christian home in Virginia, where he was born. Even from a young age, he had a deep appreciation for music.
In the late 1980s, Toby and two of his other pals, Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait, came together to establish a band called “DC Talk.” DC Talk has a string of critically acclaimed albums to their name. Toby started his solo music career after the round the trio was in taking a break from creating music together for a while. Momentum, his first studio album, was released in 2001. Toby found success with his CD by combining several genres of music, including urban rock and rhythms and traditional Christian music.
Since then, Toby has released six successful studio albums, including one titled “Christmas in Diverse City” and a holiday CD with his name. Toby has amassed seven ‘Grammy Awards’ during his solo career and has shifted more than 10 million copies of his albums. Toby is also the author of a few novels, including two books that are part of the ‘Jesus Freaks’ series that he co-wrote with Kevin Max and Michael Tait.
TobyMac was born in the suburbs of Virginia on October 22, 1964, to parents who were both very committed Christians. Toby’s affinity for modern music was something he discovered very early on in his life, and he listened to a wide variety of it, from rap to hip-hop to rock music. At thirteen, he attended a religious camp, where he was encouraged by teachings from the ‘Bible.’ Apart from him, there have only been a minimal number of artists who have mixed biblical texts with music.
His trustworthy source of motivation was the musician Sting, whose band, “The Police,” he saw in 1983 when they were on tour.Instantaneously, he was taken aback by the music and the idea that music could simultaneously be beautiful and provocative. After completing his high school education at a nearby institution, he decided that he wanted to pursue a music career and began seeking others who shared his interests so that he could start his career with them.
Michael Tait and Toby attended the same high school, and in 1987, the two decided to pursue their shared passion for music by creating a duet that would later be known as ‘DC Talk.’ They met Kevin Max Smith at ‘Liberty University,’ where they both attended, and once Kevin joined them, everything began making sense. Both of them went to the same school.1989 saw the release of the band’s first studio album, ‘DC Talk,’ in the wake of the record’s popularity, the band set off on a tour throughout the country.
Because of this, they gained even more visibility in the mainstream. They released their second album, titled ‘Nu Thang,’ in 1990 and were riding high on the popularity of their first effort. The ‘Recording Industry Association of America’ (RIAA) awarded the “gold” designation to the band’s second studio album since it was more commercially successful than their first, ‘DC Talk.’Their success continued with releasing their third album, ‘Free at Last,’ which was even more successful than ‘Nu Thang’ in sales.
The RIAA eventually awarded the album the platinum certification for sales. Because of their widespread popularity, they were invited to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” which catapulted them into the public consciousness in the United States. The band’s style was grungy but also included elements of rap and current Christian music, which resulted in a sound that was both authentic and modern. By the time they released their album “Jesus Freak” in 1995, they had reached the pinnacle of their careers.
The album received the “double-platinum” certification and was immediately followed by the massive “Jesus Freak Tour.” The band’s third and last full-length studio album, ‘Supernatural,’ was released in 1998 and was another nice success story for the band. In 2002, ‘DC Talk’ was recognized as “the most popular overtly Christian act of all time” by ‘The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music.’
All of their albums, except ‘DC Talk’ and ‘Supernatural,’ have been recognized with at least one ‘Grammy’ award each. Before the three members of the band went their separate ways, they came out with a record called “Solo,” which was an extended play that included two new songs from each of their solo projects. At that point, all three of them had already begun to focus their efforts on their projects. In 2001, Toby’s first solo album, ‘Momentum,’ arrived at the top of the ‘Billboard Heatseekers’ list. Toby’s sound eventually became characterized by a contemporary fusion of rap and grunge music.
A number of the tracks on the album, including “Extreme Days,” “Get this Party Started,” and “Yours,” have been used in several different movies and television shows. In addition to the single titled “Momentum,” all three tracks were included in the soundtrack of the video game “Crackdown.” The CD was nominated for a Grammy Award and won many Dove Awards.
Toby’s 2004 album, “Welcome to Diverse City,” continued in a style stylistically similar to his previous work but also included a reggae touch. He was given the prize for “Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year” at the “Dove Awards” since both music reviewers and fans of the genre favorably received the album. Toby continued to deliver the remixed versions of his first two solo albums, which were well-received by the general public.
His album “Portable Sounds,” released in 2007, was another example of his unique style, combining conventional rhythms with non-traditional ones. The record was yet another successful addition to his growing collection of albums. The ‘Billboard 200’ and the ‘SoundScan Contemporary Christian Overall charts placed the album in the top slot upon its first release. The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 list. As a result of his outstanding contributions to the record, Toby was recognized as the “Artist of the Year” at the Dove Awards.
Toby’s debut live album as a solo artist was titled “Alive and Transported.” It was released in 2008 and nominated for a Grammy and a GMA Dove award. Toby won both awards. The album includes cover versions of various hit tracks released by ‘DC Talk’ in the 1990s and singles released by Toby on his own. In 2010, ‘Tonight’ was launched and sold 79,000 copies in the first week after making it available to the public.
On the ‘Billboard 200’ chart, it debuted at position number six. Another one of Toby’s experiments that turned out well included not only Toby’s typical hip-hop, rap, and rock rhythms but also sounds reminiscent of Latin and funk music. Toby’s first Christmas CD, ‘Christmas in Diverse City,’ was published the following year (2011). This album was the product of Toby and several artists’ cooperation.
Toby’s third studio album, ‘Dubbed and Freq’d: A Remix Project,’ was published in 2012 and included a compilation of remixes of tracks from his first two studio albums. His second studio album, “Eye on It,” was published in the latter half of 2012 and dominated the “Billboard 200” charts. As a result, it was recognized as the first Christian album to win this award since 1997. Despite this, the album could only reach the number eight slot in the chart during its second week of release.
The song “This Is Not a Test” was released in August 2015 and debuted on the “Billboard 200” chart at position four. It debuted at number one on the ‘Top Christian Albums’ list after its first week of release, during which it sold 35,000 copies. Toby’s old bandmates from “DC Talk,” Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait, have collaborated on writing two books with him. The books are part of a series called “Jesus Freaks,” they celebrate the lives of various Christian martyrs.
Along with Tait, he is the author of the books ‘Under God’ and ‘Living under God: Discovering Your Part in God’s Plan,’ both of which were published. Toby has been a frequent guest on various chat programs broadcast on television, and the rights to some of his songs have been purchased by movie and television producers so that they may be used in their productions. The musician TobyMac has been married to his wife Amanda since 1994.
Toby makes frequent trips to her native Jamaica since she is originally from there. His admiration for Jamaican music is audible in a couple of the songs that he has written. The family of five presently calls Franklin, Tennessee home. The couple currently resides there with all of their children. It had been nearly three years since he had published an album before the unreleased in August of 2022 when the new one was finally made available. The project that the songwriter is working on is an account of his journey through difficult times and his dependence on God throughout it all.
Due to an unintentional overdose of fentanyl and amphetamines in 2019, TobyMac was forced to say goodbye to his firstborn son, Truett Foster McKeehan. TobyMac is now on the ninth installment of his annual Hits Deep arena tour, which provides an evening filled with music, religion, and fun activities for families.
