David Goggins is an ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance biker, triathlete, public speaker, and author from the United States. He is a former member of the US Air Force Tactical Air Control Party and a retired US Navy SEAL who participated in the Iraq War. Can’t Hurt Me, his book, was published in 2018. As one of the few African Americans at his elementary school, Goggins was subjected to racism. Goggins started working at his father’s skate rink alongside his family when he was six years old. Goggins began long-distance running to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation after three of his buddies perished in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings in 2005. Goggins has raised more than $2 million for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation by competing in endurance events, including the Badwater Ultramarathon three times.
Goggins intended to run the Badwater Ultramarathon as a fundraiser, but organisers told him he needed to run another ultramarathon beforehand, as the Badwater is an invitational race. Goggins competed in the San Diego One Day ultramarathon in 2005, which took place at Hospitality Point in San Diego. He completed the race in 19 hours and 6 minutes. He qualified for the Boston Marathon by finishing the Las Vegas Marathon in a time that qualified him. In Hawaii, Goggins competed in the Hurt-100. Goggins was invited to compete in the 2006 Badwater-135 and placed fifth overall.
He competed in the Ultraman World Championships Triathlon in Hawaii three months after completing his first Badwater Ultramarathon in 2006. In the three-day, 320-mile race, he finished second. In 2009, he competed in the Furnace Creek-508 Invitational Cycling Race, an ultra-distance invitational race.
Goggins’ greatest finish at the Badwater-135 came in 2007, when he finished third overall. After a sabbatical from the event since 2008, he competed in the Badwater-135 in 2013 and finished 18th. He competed in 14 more ultra-endurance races over the next two years, finishing in the top five in nine of them. At the 48-hour national championships, he broke a course record, surpassing the previous mark by 20 miles with a total distance gone of 203.5 miles.
Goggins travels and speaks to sports teams as an inspirational speaker. He has spoken with players from professional clubs such as the Atlanta Hawks and Seattle Seahawks, as well as NCAA football players from Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan. After seeing Goggins compete in a 24-hour ultramarathon, entrepreneur Jesse Itzler called and hired him to live with him for a month. Itzler documented his experience on his blog, and the account was later published as the book Living With A SEAL.
