It was in Swindon, England, on October 14, 1946, that the man who would become known as “Justin Hayward” was born. When he was nine years old, he got his first guitar as a gift. In 1965, he joined Marty Wilde’s backing band, the Wild Cats, together with the other English rock band, the Beatles. By the year’s end in 1965, Hayward had penned four compositions he was confident enough in to release as solo efforts. Because of this, he decided to contact Lonnie Donegan, a producer who had experience as a “snuffle king.” On the last day of 1965, Pie Records released “London Is Behind Me,” Hayward’s debut solo single. The single, however, did not achieve any significant chart success.

Allophone released a follow-up song on August 26, 1966, titled “I Can’t Face the World Without You,” which also became a hit. Hayward joined the band shortly after responding to an ad published by lead guitarist Eric Burdon. After filling the role himself, Burdon suggested he contact the Moody Blues, who were looking for a guitarist/singer to replace Denny Laine. Burdon was the former occupant of the role. The Moody Blues’ most well-known lineup wouldn’t have been complete without Hayward, who first heard them when he was a teenager and eventually joined the band.

Through the first half of that year, after Hayward joined, the band maintained the R&B-influenced sound that had made them renowned before he did. But eventually, they began performing and recording new material. Their career took off in a big way after this when Decca/London Records asked them to participate in a stereo demonstration record that fused rock with symphonic sounds. Days of Future Passed (1967), the album that arose from these sessions, was crucial in resurrecting the fortunes of the band, not least of all due to the popularity of Hayward’s now-iconic compositions “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon.”

Over the course of the next seven years, the band’s sound would be based on this lush, romantic style. While all of the band members contributed songs and lead vocals, Hayward eventually took center stage as the band’s primary vocalist and songwriter, penning timeless hits like “Lovely to See You,” “The Story in Your Eyes,” and “New Horizons.” Hayward sang lead vocals and wrote songs as well. While the rest of the band was on hiatus in 1974, John Lodge (bass) and Hayward (guitar/vocals) released the album Blue Jays. As a result, in 1975, 10cc’s “Blue Guitar” single was released, which featured a track by the band as background music. When Hayward’s debut solo album, Songwriter, was released in 1977, he officially launched a solo career. When compared to his previous work with the Moodies, the tone on this album was more stripped-down, upbeat, and acoustically rich.

In 1980, Jeff Wayne released his second solo album, Night Flight, following the success of his Top Ten single “Forever Autumn,” which first appeared on his 1978 album War of the Worlds. Hayward devoted most of his time and energy to the reunited Moody Blues over the next few years, when they would embark on a busy recording and touring schedule. His third solo album, 1985’s Moving Mountains, returned to a sound reminiscent of his early 1970s work. In the late ’80s, Hayward’s “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” and “Your Wildest Dreams” were the Moodies’ last major chart successes. In terms of the Billboard Hot 100, both singles were number one.

Hayward recorded several solo albums in the 1990s, beginning with the orchestral “Classic Blue” in 1989, then “The View from the Hill” in 1996, and finally “Live at San Juan Capistrano” in 1998. (1998). Hayward, bassist John Lodge, and drummer Graeme Edge are the only remaining members of the original lineup of The Moody Blues, which remains one of the most in-demand bands for live performances. In 2005, Hayward was honored with ASCAP’s Golden Note Award for British composers. In 2013, he was honored with his second Ivor Novello Award from the Performing Rights Agency in the United Kingdom.

Over the course of more than fifty years at the top of the music and entertainment industries, Justin Hayward has become a household name around the world. His tenacity as a musician has helped define the eras in which he has performed, especially in his roles as lead singer, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter for the Moody Blues. His fame stems primarily from his participation in the group. The group has sold over 55 million records and won numerous awards over the course of its 45-year career.

The Moody Blues are universally recognized as musical trailblazers and innovators. The critical acclaim they’ve received has mirrored their commercial success, which in turn has boosted their entire stature. Justin and his fellow members of The Moody Blues were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. When Justin was only five years old, his grandfather gave him his entire collection of 78 rpm recordings. Justin, a British native who grew up in the town of Swindon, credits this experience with inspiring an early interest in music. Justin continues by saying that he now has “a whole new universe” to draw inspiration from as a result of the event.

He quickly progressed to the guitar and was performing with bands by the time he was a teenager. He left school at 17 to audition for British rock and roll star Marty Wilde after seeing an ad for an open call in the magazine Melody Maker. For me, Marty’s offer to have me play guitar for him was akin to a lifelong dream coming true. The company decided to hire me. Justin says it was Marty who encouraged him to become a composer. Justin appeared at the London Palladium during his time playing and recording with Marty’s “Wilde Three.” Their friendship has endured the test of time: “Marty is still my idol.”

He first established himself as a writer with a few songs released under his own name before, in the summer of 1966, he joined the Moody Blues. He’s been there since the beginning, helping form the group. Early success with the single “Fly Me High” was followed by even greater success with “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon,” both from his ground-breaking album “Days of Future Past.” After becoming a hit with NASA’s astronaut crew, this record was taken on multiple trips aboard the Atlantis shuttle by Chief Astronaut “Hoot” Gibson.

Success seemed unlikely to abate for Justin, as seen by his continued release of classics like “Question,” “The Voice,” “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere,” and “Your Wildest Dreams.” They laid the groundwork for the Moody Blues’ meteoric rise to fame and for his solo career, which he has maintained to this day.

During a break in Moody Blues’ 1975 tour schedule, Justin worked with the Blue Jays on an album that included the hit single “Blue Guitar” (recorded with the members of 10cc). Songwriter, Night Flight, Moving Mountains, and The View From the Hill are just a few of Justin’s solo albums. This is in addition to the many albums the Moodies have released, which have helped cement their place as one of the most successful recording and touring acts.

Written for Jeff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” album, Justin’s 1978 hit “Forever Autumn” proved he could write hit singles for artists other than the Moody Blues. This song became a signature for him as a songwriter, and he took the stage for five consecutive years (2005–2010) to star in the unforgettable live stadium show. A member of the elite “SODS” (The Society of Distinguished Songwriters) since the 1980s, the group crowned him “King SOD” in 2012. Furthermore, in 1989, he collaborated with Mike Batt and the London Philharmonic Orchestra to make the album “Classic Blue.”

The television show “This Is Your Life” featured Justin in March of 1997. Several of Justin’s pals, including Marty Wilde, Lionel Bart, and astronaut “Hoot” Gibson, were there for the decision-making process. One of the highest honors that can be granted to a British writer is ASCAP’s “The Golden Note” award, which he received in 2005. In addition, he has participated in numerous Nashville showcase events alongside other songwriters. The Performing Rights Society of the United Kingdom honored him with an Ivor Novello for “Outstanding Achievement” in 2013, making it the second time he has won the award.

When recording or performing, Hayward typically uses a red Gibson ES-335, but he also uses other guitars. A 1955 Martin D-28 “Dreadnought,” a James Olson six-string acoustic, a black Guild acoustic, a Squire Stratocaster (basically an affordable version of the Fender Stratocaster since Squire is a subsidiary of Fender), a black Guild electric, and a black Guild acoustic are among the other guitars in the collection. From 1965 until 1968, he did not have access to his Gibson 335, therefore he played different guitars, the most prominent of which was a 1964 Fender.

Telecaster and a hand-built 12-string guitar that he had refinished for Donegan and then bought from Donegan’s widow. Nevertheless, in an interview shot in 2005 and included on the Lovely to See You performance DVD, Hayward claims that he has owned the 1963 Gibson 335 since 1967. His go-to guitar for recent albums and live shows is a Collings D3. Hayward played mandolin, sitar, and other instruments on his albums A Question of Balance and In Search of the Lost Chord.

When one relationship with Hayward ended, another began, he wrote “Nights in White Satin” “in appreciation of all women,” he says. He wrote it as he was moving on from one serious relationship to another. The couple tied the knot on December 19, 1970. His daughter Doremi was born on December 3, 1972; she sang backup on the track “Raised on Love” on Hayward’s 1977 album Songwriter. In 2013, Hayward talked about how he and his fellow Moody Blues bandmates had learned transcendental meditation in 1967.
