Katherine Jenkins, a Welsh mezzo-soprano, is a well-known performer who rose to prominence in the early 2000s as Britain’s all-time best-selling classical artist of the last 25 years. Jenkins, who has a warm voice and an engaging stage presence, rose to prominence in 2003 after performing at Westminster Cathedral for Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee. Her 2004 debut, Premiere, debuted at number one on the U.K. Classical Album Chart, owing to her presence.

Since then, she has had critical and commercial success, with six of her albums reaching the top of the U.K. classical charts. Two of the albums, Second Nature in 2004 and Living a Dream in 2005, also won the Classic Brit Award for Album of the Year. While she is still a sensation in the United Kingdom, she is also well-known abroad. In 2012, she took a break from music to compete on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, where she ended as a runner-up. Jenkins was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2014 for her contributions to music and charitable work.

Jenkins, who was born on June 29, 1980, in Neath, West Glamorgan, Wales, fell under the spell of classical music at the age of seven, playing piano and singing in her local choir throughout her childhood. She joined the Cathedral Singers of the Royal School of Church Music in 1990 and also sang with the National Youth Choir of Wales.

Jenkins was accepted into London’s Royal Academy of Music at the age of 17, where he performed a number of operatic roles while studying Italian, German, French, and Russian. She continued to study opera as a postgraduate while also working as a vocal instructor, but after winning the Face of Wales modeling competition, she decided to supplement her income as a fashion model. Jenkins signed a six-album, seven-figure recording contract with Universal Classics in 2003, possibly the greatest deal in the history of classical music in the United Kingdom.

Together, the CDs catapulted the singer to a level of commercial popularity previously unheard of in classical music circles, and she capitalized on her rising mainstream appeal by recording a classical rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” on 2005’s Living a Dream.

Serenade topped both the classical and album charts in the United Kingdom in 2006, while Rejoice accomplished the same the following year. Her penultimate album for Universal was Sacred Arias (2008) before she moved to Warner Bros. for the more contemporary Believe (2009) and Daydream (2010). (2011). (2011). Jenkins released her first official holiday album, This Is Christmas, the following year.

In 2013, she returned to Decca with the release of the L’Amour collection, and in the same year, she ran the London marathon and raised nearly £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in the United Kingdom. Her contributions to philanthropy and the music industry were recognized with an O.B.E. in 2014 at the New Year’s awards. Jenkins returned to her classical crossover roots the following year with the album Home Sweet Home, which featured a collection of rousing anthems with allusions to her homeland.

Jenkins took a break from the music industry in 2015 to give birth to her first child, but she returned in 2016 with her 11th studio album, Celebration. The CD, which was released to coincide with Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations, included a variety of patriotic songs, including the whole three-verse version of the British national hymn “God Save the Queen.”

The following year, she appeared as Julie Jordan opposite Alfie Boe’s Billy Bigelow in an English National Opera production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel. In 2018, she returned to the studio with Guiding Light, releasing the song “Jealous of the Angels.” 2020’s Cinema Paradiso, in which she addressed songs already popular in films, was followed by her Christmas Spectacular, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall under COVID-19 lockdown and released in theatres as well as on Blu-ray and CD.

Welsh Mezzo-Soprano Superstar Katherine Jenkins OBE was named ‘The Biggest Selling Classical Artist of the Century’ by Classic FM, making her the world’s most successful classical singer. She solidified her status even further by achieving her 13th number one album, smashing the record books since joining Universal Classics at the age of 23.

Katherine broke onto the music world in 2003, when she sang at Westminster Cathedral to commemorate Pope John Paul II’s Silver Jubilee, became the mascot for her much-loved Welsh Rugby Team, singing the hymn before crucial international matches, and made her debut at the Sydney Opera House.

Following that came awards and honors, as well as invitations to sing for Popes, Presidents, and Princes. Jenkins is a favorite of the British Royal Family, having performed ‘God Save The Queen’ at Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, The Queen’s Coronation Concerts at Buckingham Palace, and Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday celebrations at Windsor Castle.

Katherine learned to sing as a chorister in the St. David’s Church choir in Neath, South Wales. Her passion for music was nurtured in the Welsh Valleys, where she was able to join choral groups, perform with Welsh Male Voice Choirs, and compete in Eisteddfods and other musical events.

She has always attributed her down-to-earth personality to her Welsh ancestors and her wonderful family, whom she affectionately refers to as ‘The Taffia.’ Sadly, Katherine’s father Selwyn died of cancer when she was only 15 years old, and his memory has been a driving force in her life ever since. Every record, every award has been dedicated to him.

Katherine signed the ‘biggest recording deal in UK classical music history’ and released her debut album ‘Premiere’, which became her first classical number one album, just months after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music. Six months later, her second album, ‘Second Nature,’ debuted at number one and earned Katherine her first Classic BRIT Award for best album in 2005. The following year, Katherine received her second Classic BRIT Award for ‘Album of the Year’ for ‘Living A Dream.’
