Lee Trevino

Among American professional golfers, Lee Trevino is often regarded as among the best of all time. He had a difficult upbringing because of the extreme poverty into which he was born. Due to his inability to maintain regular school attendance, he took a job as a caddy. By working as a caddie, he was able to watch and imitate the techniques of many different PGA Tour players. Soon after, he hustled and gambled on his golf strokes while serving in the United States Marine Corps, rising quickly from caddie to successful rookie professional golfer. His experience at the U.S. Open in Oakhill was his first real taste of success.

In the early 1970s, he had his best season ever, winning the Canadian Open, the British Open, and the U.S. Open in the span of twenty days. In the same year, he also took home the trophy for the U.S. Open for a record-tying second time. There are a total of 29 victories in his record book, with six of them being major championships. He is one of just four players in history to win the US Open twice. The Open Championship is a golf tournament held annually on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. It was the Augusta Masters, the one major title he didn’t win, because he didn’t think his game had a chance.

While he was a prolific talker and exceedingly intelligent on the golf course, off the course he was a recluse. Lee Trevino was born to poor Mexican-American parents in Dallas, Texas, on December 1, 1939. Many Mexican Americans looked up to him as a symbol of success and cheerfulness, earning him the nicknames “the Merry Mex” and “Supermex.” To start a family, Trevino was the firstborn in his family. His mother, Juanita Trevino, raised him alongside his gravedigger grandfather, Joe Trevino, when his father, Joseph, abandoned the family.

Although he tried, he was not able to keep up with his schooling because he had to work to help support his family. Working in the cotton fields by the time he was five years old was already a source of pride for him. His uncle handed him an old golf club and some balls when he was young, and that’s how he got into the sport. In fact, he got his first job, as a caddy at the Dallas Athletic Club, when he was just fourteen years old. At age 17, he enlisted to serve his country. While serving in the Marines, he played golf with officers and competed in Asian tournaments.

His professional career began in earnest in 1960, after he was dismissed from the Marine Corps with honor. After waiting another six years, he finally made the journey to America. Open. He had a respectable performance, finishing in a tie for 54th. Victory at the 1967 United States Open was a turning point in his career. He came in as #5 overall, just 8 shots behind eventual champion Jack Nicklaus. Additionally, he was given guaranteed eligibility for the position the following year. He had a breakthrough year in 1971. Within a span of twenty days, he was able to win the U.S. championship. A golfer who wins the U.S. Open, the Canadian Open, and the British Open in the same calendar year makes history as the first player to accomplish this feat. Open, the Rogers Cup, and the Wimbledon Championships.

In 1972, he defeated Jack Nicklaus, the tournament favorite, to win the British Open at Scotland’s Muirfield. In doing so, he joined the exclusive company of Arnold Palmer, who had defended his title 10 years prior. He had just won his first PGA Championship in 1974 when he was struck by lightning and injured his spine in the Western Open in Chicago. The collision necessitated surgical removal of a spinal disc that had been injured. In 1984, at the Shoal Creek PGA Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, he won a PGA Tour event for the last time. He shot 15 under par, breaking Hal Sutton’s record of 10 under par from the previous year. In the end, he scored 273 points.

He joined the Senior Tour at the end of 1989 and won seven titles the following year. Perhaps the most notable of these victories was the US Open triumph over Nicklaus. For the Older Players Only. As a result of the course’s design not suiting his game, he avoided the Augusta Masters on numerous occasions. When the dust settled, he knew he’d made a mistake by sitting out the competition.

Trevino won his first major tournament in 1968 at the Oak Hill Country Club East Course in New York by four strokes over defending winner Jack Nicklaus. In 1971, he beat Nicklaus in the U.S. Open, won the Canadian Open (his first of three), and the British Open all within a span of three weeks. In his career, Trevino won 29 times on the PGA Tour, including six majors.

After the 1970 PGA season, he had amassed $157,037 in earnings, making him the tour’s all-time money winner. With six victories the next year, he was named PGA Player of the Year, while Jack Nicklaus took home the highest prize money. He won five times on the PGA Tour between 1970 and 1980, earning him the Vardon Trophy, the PGA of America’s award to the player with the lowest scoring average. He won the Sportsman of the Year title from Sports Illustrated in 1971 for exemplifying “the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence,” and the Male Athlete of the Year honor from the Associated Press that same year.

In the 1990s, he earned the Byron Nelson Award for lowest scoring average on the Champions Tour three times and the Arnold Palmer Award for most money won in a season twice. After experiencing failed marriages to Claudia Fenley and Linda, Trevino wed Claudia Bove in 1983. Twice in the 1990s, he finished as the Champions Tour’s money winner, earning him the Arnold Palmer Award. He had six children from three different marriages: Richard, Daniel, Tony, Lesley Ann, Troy, and Olivia.

This golfing legend played himself in the movie “Happy Gilmore,” starring Adam Sandler, which was about a fictional unsuccessful hockey player with an unrealized ability to golf. Once upon a time, a witty golfer made a statement along the lines of “You earn a lot of money in this game.” Any of my ex-spouses will confirm this for you. They’re so wealthy that both of their wives can afford to stay at home with their children. This superb golfer played himself in the Adam Sandler comedy “Happy Gilmore,” which was about a fictional hockey player who discovers he has an untapped talent for golf.

This humorous golfer said something like, “You earn a lot of money in this game.” Any of my ex-spouses will confirm this for you. Among the many things Trevino said back in January 1971, “Neither of their spouses work since they are so wealthy” stands out. When he spoke to a young reporter in Seaside, California, he was feeling good about the game he was playing and the year ahead. In an instant, he was Babe Ruth pointing to center field, Joe Namath predicting a Super Bowl, and Muhammad Ali predicting a round.

This hardly needs updating: Trevino won three times in 1969 and 1970. However, the Tucson Open was the site of two of the victories. Even though Lee Trevino won the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill by four strokes over Jack Nicklaus, he went on to lose the next eight major championships he entered. Successful golfers like Lee Trevino, who has won six major championships and 29 PGA Tour events, measure their success in terms of major titles. After holding a two-shot lead going into the final round of the 1970 British Open at St. Andrews, the “Merry Mex” ultimately finished in second place.

Nicklaus offered him an impromptu pep talk in the locker room at the Doral Eastern Open that spring, and he gladly took it. The “Golden Bear” didn’t tell his opponent anything he didn’t already know, but he did give him the facts. A man, according to Trevino, came down next to him and remarked, “You don’t realize how talented you are, you can win everywhere.” Lack of conviction was never an issue. Nonetheless, it’s a major deal when the best player in the world compliments your skills.

The two golf pros were pictured taking off off the tee at the charity event, where they would go on to win a total of 77 tournaments between the PGA and LPGA Tours. Trevino, a 6-time winner of a Major Championship and 82 years old at the time of this writing, took his trademark posture and drove the ball in his typical fashion. After Lopez, a winner of 48 LPGA Tour events, teed off first and drove a great shot, Trevino repeatedly exclaimed, “that was wonderful” before he was ready to tee.
