Ex-professional basketball player from the United States, Rex Everett Chapman was born on October 5, 1967. In college, Chapman excelled at the University of Kentucky, and he spent the next 12 years playing for four different NBA clubs. He eventually worked for the Denver Nuggets as their v.p. of player personnel.

While attending high school at Apollo High School in Owensboro, Kentucky, Chapman became a basketball sensation, drawing attention from colleges around the country. But he stayed close to home by signing with his alma mater, the University of Kentucky. In his first two seasons with the Kentucky Wildcats, Chapman was a major contributor and was recognized by being chosen to the All-Southeastern Conference Team. With the help of Chapman and fellow future NBA star Winston Bennett, the Wildcats went 27-6 and won the SEC championship for the 37th time in Kentucky’s history during Chapman’s second season.

The Wildcats entered the 1988 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament as the number two seed in the South region, having been ranked sixth in the country by both the Associated Press and UPI. Kentucky’s talented players got them to the Sweet 16 of the tournament, but they ultimately lost to Villanova there. In a losing cause, Chapman scored 30 points. Prior to entering the NBA draft, Chapman scored 1,073 points in just two years at Kentucky. According to Chapman, his decision to depart early for the NBA draft was driven by pressure from the university forbidding his interracial relationship.

In the 1988 NBA draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Chapman eighth overall. He was the team’s first draft pick and first player signed. Basketball fans in Charlotte went crazy for Chapman in his rookie season, when he averaged 16.9 points per contest. Unfortunately, the expansion Hornets went 20-62 despite his efforts that season.

In his debut NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Chapman placed sixth, behind only Dominique Wilkins. However, in the 1990–1991 season, Chapman and teammate Kendall Gill competed again. He was defeated by Celtics player Dee Brown, coming in third place overall behind Shawn Kemp and Brown.

Despite Chapman’s 17 ppg that season, the Hornets finished with a record not much better than the previous year’s. Chapman spent another year and a half with the Hornets before being sent to the Washington Bullets in the middle of the 1991–1992 season. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury and was limited to playing in the season finale. This was the first of many injuries that would plague Chapman for the rest of his career. On February 19, 1992, the Washington Bullets acquired Chapman from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Tom Hammonds. He appeared in 60 games during the 1993–1994 season and 45 games during the 1994–1995 season.

He was moved to the Miami Heat after suffering his second serious injury during the next season. Chapman had a promising season at first, culminating in a 14.8 ppg average. In a game against the Chicago Bulls on February 23, 1996, he scored 39 points (making 9 of 10 3-point tries) and led the injury-depleted Miami Heat to a 113-104 victory, delivering the Bulls one of their 10 losses during their historic 72-10 run. He was only able to play in 56 games because he was injured again later in the season. He joined the Phoenix Suns in the end.

When Chapman joined the Suns for the 1996–97 season, he quickly became a fan favorite, as had been the case with many of his other Suns teammates. He averaged 13 points per game in 65 appearances. His three-pointer in Game 4 of the 1997 First Round against the Seattle SuperSonics made him a local hero in Phoenix.

For most basketball fans, Chapman will always be associated with this one moment: the Phoenix Suns were up 2-0 in the series against the Seattle SuperSonics, but behind by three points with a minute left to play at America West Arena in Phoenix. With 1.9 seconds remaining, Chapman saved the inbounded ball as it was about to go out of bounds, fired up a three-pointer, and made it to force overtime. Sadly, the Suns lost the game and the series in a decisive Game 5, thereby missing the playoffs entirely. Chapman has said in public that he does not want to be reminded of the incident too much because the Suns ultimately fell short.

During the 1997-1998 season, Chapman appeared in 68 games with the Suns and averaged 15.9 points per contest. However, he suffered another injury and only managed to participate in 38 games during the strike-shortened 1999 season. Chapman would suit up for 53 games during the 1999–2000 campaign before deciding to call it quits due to a recurrence of his injury.

In his 666 career NBA regular season games, Chapman scored 9,731 points (14.6 ppg), dished out 1,798 assists (2.7 apg), and pulled down 1,645 rebounds (2.5 rpg).

Chapman stayed on with the Suns after retiring from playing, first as a scout and then as the Director of Basketball Operations. He worked as TNT’s color commentator for the 2004 and 2005 NBA Playoffs. He joined the Minnesota Timberwolves as a personnel scout after relocating from Phoenix in 2005. He joined the Denver Nuggets in 2006 as their vice president of player personnel.

According to an interview he gave in 2005, Chapman claimed that interracial dating was frowned upon and prohibited during his time as a student and professional athlete. He added that non-white athletes in Kentucky like Allan Houston and Derek Anderson were ignored by sports reporters at the time.

During the First Four and Second Round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Chapman acted as an analyst for CBS and Turner. Along with Seth Davis, Steve Smith, and Matt Winer, he was a broadcaster.

It has been revealed that Chapman would serve as the network TV color analyst for the Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team during the 2013-2014 season. Chapman was the commentator for Cox7 Arizona as the ‘Lopes began their first year of transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I, with play-by-play voice Matt Rosen. Cox7 Arizona aired every ‘Lopes home game played in the Grand Canyon University Arena.

Chapman was arrested on September 19th, 2014, in Scottsdale, Arizona, for allegedly stealing $14,000 worth of goods from an Apple Store. According to Sergeant Mark Clark, Chapman is suspected of picking up things from the business near Scottsdale Road and Greenway and then acting as if he were paying for them at the store’s self-checkout. After picking up his purchases, he’d walk out of the store without making any kind of payment. The things were purportedly sold at a pawn shop in his area. Multiple workers at the time recognized Chapman from his time spent in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns.

Local Louisville news station WDRB reported on March 31 that prosecutors had decided not to press charges against Chapman and had instead sent the case back to Scottsdale police for additional inquiry. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported on September 30, 2014, that Chapman had checked into a drug treatment facility in Louisville, Kentucky, to be treated for suboxone use. Suboxone is a medication used to assist people wean themselves off of opioid-based pain medications.

In 2015, Chapman disclosed that he had undergone ten surgeries throughout his 14-year NBA career and that he had struggled with prescription pain drug addiction for 17 years.

He claims he has no recollection, but the footage shows otherwise. The former Kentucky basketball icon, 12-year NBA veteran, and multimillionaire was spotted by surveillance cameras browsing the aisles of an Apple Store in Scottsdale, Arizona, before quickly purchasing numerous products and leaving the store. As a result of Chapman’s ninth offense of not paying, an Apple employee recognized him as a former shooting guard for the Suns and subsequently gave his identify to the police.

For selling products worth $14,000 to a pawnshop for $5,460, Chapman was arrested on September 19, 2014, outside his Scottsdale home and charged with nine charges of organized retail theft and five counts of trafficking in stolen property. (Chapman claims he has no recollection of pawning the goods, as well.) The two offenses are equally serious felonies. The attorney for Maricopa County has said a decision on whether or not to pursue prosecution will be made soon.

Chapman, now 47 years old, claims he has no recollection of committing the crimes for which he is being held responsible since his mind was in such a muddled, cloudy state due to his long-term prescription drug abuse. Chapman entered a rehabilitation facility in Louisville ten days after his arrest, marking his third time there since he retired from professional baseball in 2000.

He claims to be ready to confront the truth as he attempts to put his life back together, even if his account of the thefts turns out to be untrue. When the news surfaced, a Phoenix, Arizona, viewer told the station, “The public elevates these athletes so up, and they forget that they have a responsibility.

Chapman shrugs and says, “I don’t want to claim something I don’t remember.” I’m just trying to be as forthright and truthful as possible. In fact, I can barely recall any details.

Chapman has split his time between Scottsdale, where he and his ex-wife Bridget share custody of their four children (Zeke, 22; Caley, 20; Tatum, 16; and Tyson, 14) and Hermosa Beach, California, where he is staying at a friend’s house rent-free while he contemplates his next professional move. Since his arrest, 6’4″ Chapman has lost 40 pounds (he was up to 250) and his face now has a healthy, golden colour. He freely admits that he has no idea what lies ahead. However, he finally feels like he has one after a lengthy struggle. Chapman initially checked into Sierra Tucson hospital for treatment in the spring of 2001.

There was a time when he claims he was taking 40 Vicodins and 9 OxyContin every day. While Chapman was vomiting into trash cans and going in and out of consciousness during the first week of detox, he overheard one of the nurses comment to her coworker that his detox was identical to what heroin users generally go through. In retrospect, I was surprised and thought, “Heroin? “Are you serious? Chapman recalls. I really couldn’t believe she was referring to me.
