Vin Scully

Watching a baseball match in Los Angeles without Vin Scully announcing it is like eating a hamburger without a ham! In the history of sports broadcasting, Vin Scully is a name to count on. Its 67 seasons and partnership with the Dodgers, from Brooklyn Dodger days to Los Angeles Dodgers as their television station, is the longest-standing tenure of any professional sports broadcaster with one team. Scully was fascinated by football broadcasts on radio since an early age and dreamt one day to become a sports broadcaster.

His dream came true when he took on the profile of a Fordham University student broadcaster and journalist. His first professional experience was broadcast in November 1949 by Red Barber for the CBS Radio Network. In the following year, he first became one of the announcers in his radio and TV booths in the Brooklyn Dodger team. He quickly became the team’s play-by-play announcer and remained with the team until 2016. Interestingly enough, his broader vision and his complete know-how on and off-field events distinguished him from his counterparts. He tried to infuse his knowledge of current affairs and how this relates within his broadcasting to a particular game. His impressive style and unique signing description were added: ‘It’s time for Dodger’s baseball!’

Vin Scully was born in The Bronx, Washington Heights, Manhattan, on 29 November 1927. His dad was a silk salesman while his mother was a homemaker.
He has taken menial jobs since his early years to make ends meet. He sent beer and e-mail to the New York City Pennsylvania Hotel, pushed garment racks and cleaned silver. He graduated from the Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx. Interestingly, he was caught listening to the radio broadcast of football and aspired to be a sports broadcaster.

After completing his studies, he joined the U.S. Navy for two years. Freed from his navy duties, he realized his childhood dream of being a broadcaster. He then took the profile of a Fordham University student broadcaster and journalist.

At the same time, he also played the Fordham Rams baseball team center fields and called radio stations for baseball, soccer, and basketball teams in Ram. After acquiring sports broadcasting experience, he applied on almost every radio station along the eastern seaboard.

In November 1949 he finally got the chance to broadcast a match for the CBS Radio Network. Driven by his passion, he performed excellently and impressed his employer the first time. He was one of the announcers of Brooklyn Dodgers’ radio and TV booths with Barber and Cornelius Desmond as early as 1950. Gillette made a profitable rift between Barber and World Series sponsors in 1953 when Barber left the team.

He made Barber the team’s advertiser and became the youngest man ever to broadcast a World Series game, a record to date. His impressive style, remarkable game knowledge, and excellent microphone technology earned him the position of the team’s principal advertiser. In 1957, before the club moved to Los Angeles, he announced the Dodger game in Brooklyn.

He accompanied Brooklyn Dodgers and remained their chief transmitter in Los Angeles. He announced the first game for the club, renamed Los Angeles Dodgers, in the 1958 season. Interestingly, his action description on-air was listened not just to those who missed the chance to watch the game live, but also to fans on the ground due to the colossal reasons and unable to follow the game.

The increased fan popularity earned him an offer from New York Yankees’ lead play-by-play advertiser. He chose to stay with the Dodgers, however and rejected the proposal. In the 1980s and 1990s, he called all but the third and seventh inning, giving other Dodger announcers a chance. Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter were his broadcast partners.

He also tried his hand in football while his career was at its peak. From 1975 to 1982, the National Football League TV games for CBS Sports were announced. What is remarkable is that even in football he has proven his credentials. In addition, he served as an advertiser for the CBS tennis and golf tournament, apart from baseball and football. His growing involvement in other games led him to devote less time to the Dodgers.

In 1977 he called CBS Radio Baseball, which continued for the All-Star Game until 1982. He was the official advertiser for the World Series from 1979 to 1982 together with Sparky Anderson.

During the 1981 NFL season, while John Madden was selected by CBS as their star color commentator, Pat Summerall and Scully became top 2 play-by-the-play commenters. Eventually, the two filled up because of the other commitments for each other’s absence.

After Summerall has been chosen for Super Bowl XVI as its main advertiser with Madden, he and Stram became the official advertiser for the NFC Championship Game.

In 1983, because of the growing conflict between him and CBS, he left CBS for NBC. Instead, he served as the lead TV broadcaster of NBC from 1983 to 1989. During his tenure at the NBC, he not only called for the Saturday Week Game, but also for three World Series, four National League, and four All-Star Games. He also saw several historical moments at NBC.

He didn’t let go of his association with the Dodgers while he was with NBC. Instead, he broadcast home games on Dodgers TV network radio android games.

His career in the 1989 season had a little downhill slide. He had laryngitis first, which prevented him from taking the microphone. Later that year, NBC lost TV rights to cover CBS’ Major League.

His contract with NBC ended the same year after the Championship, allowing him to focus the Dodgers on all his energies. Again he served as CBS Radio’s national radio advertiser. His first assignment in the new capacity was the 1990 World Series.

He remained for seven years in the CBS. In the meantime, he broadcasted the annual Skins Game for ABC from 1991 to 1996. Between 1992 and 2000, he called the ABC Senior Skins Game and various TBS golf events.

He served as the Master of Ceremonies for MasterCard’s All-Century Major League Baseball Team in 1999.

Dodger management re-established its contract with the club in the baseball season of 2008 in 2006. He is currently calling around 100 games a season for KLAC radio and television flagship radio stations, KCAL-TV and Fox Sports West, and Prime Ticket.

On 23 August 2013, Scully announced his return to the booth in 2014 as team broadcaster for his 65th season.

2 October 2016 marked the final match of the iconic 67-year Dodgers broadcasting career of Vin Scully, and his career was finished as it should only be – calling a Giant Dodgers game. In 1982 he was a proud recipient of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Ford Frick Award. He received the Emmy Sportscasting Lifetime Achievement Award.

The American Sportscasters Association, the National Radio Hall of Fame, NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame, and California Sports Hall of Fame have introduced him to this Hall of Fame. He was named the National Sportscaster of the Year three times in 1965, 1978, and 1982. In addition, he was named California Sportscaster of the Year 29 times. The American Sportscasters Association named him Century Sportscaster in 2000 and TOP 50 All-Time Sportscaster in 2009.

In 2009 he was awarded the LA Sports & Entertainment Commission Ambassador Award of Excellence. He has a star at 6675 Hollywood Blvd on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He was recently named Grand Marshal for the 2014 Roses Parade Tournament in 2013 In 1957, he was married to Joan Crawford. The relationship, however, lasted 15 years as a result of his wife’s tragic death from an accidental medical overdose in 1972.

The next year, that is in 1973, he again tied his marriage with Sandra Schaefer, who had two kids from her previous marriage. The couple was blessed with a son who died in a helicopter crash at the age of 33. He is a faithful Catholic Roman.
