Trevor Rees-Jones (also known as Trevor Rees; born 3 March 1968 in Germany) is a British bodyguard who was seriously injured in the vehicle accident that killed Diana, Princess of Wales, on August 31, 1997 in Paris. He has no recollection of the crash because he sustained a significant head injury.
According to some media reports, he was wearing a seat belt and survived the crash, however investigations found that none of the car’s occupants were wearing seat belts.
Rees-Jones was born on March 3, 1968, in Rinteln, Germany, as the middle child of Colin Rees, a British Army surgeon, and Gill, a nurse. Gareth, his older brother, and John, his younger brother, are his siblings. He moved back to Oswestry, near his father’s childhood home, with his family when he was ten years old. He joined the Combined Cadet Force at Fitzalan High School.
Rees-Jones was critically injured in the car accident that killed Diana, Princess of Wales on August 31, 1997. Dodi Fayed, the Princess’ boyfriend, and Henri Paul, the car’s driver, died at the scene; Rees-Jones was the only survivor. His face was flattened, and he had multiple broken or crushed bones. Maxillofacial surgeon Luc Chikhani used roughly 150 pieces of titanium to hold the bones together and replicate the original form of his face, which was rebuilt from family photographs. His face had practically returned to normal after a year.
Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, Rees-employer Jones’s at the time of the crash, covered some of the hospital charges, while the British National Health Service covered the remainder (NHS). Rees-Jones’ tongue was thought to have been lost in the crash at first, however this was not the case. He endured a ten-hour operation to get his jaw back to normal.
Rees-Jones returned to the United Kingdom on October 3, 1997, after spending a month in hospital. He could only communicate at the time by whispering and writing down answers. On May 19, 1998, he resigned from his employment as a bodyguard, claiming that his work would be accessible if he wanted to return.
Following his rehabilitation, Rees-Jones relocated to north Shropshire, where he worked for a time in a small family-run sportswear shop in Oswestry. On February 15, 2003, he married Ann Scott, a teacher at Belvidere School in Shrewsbury. The event was held at Welshpool, Wales.
With the help of ghostwriter Moira Johnston, Rees-Jones wrote a book titled The Bodyguard’s Story: Diana, the Crash, and the Sole Survivor (ISBN 0-446-61004-6) on his experiences, which was released in 2000. Rees-Jones’ incomplete memories and those of his family and friends were used to reconstruct the events in the book. He chose to publish the book after hearing numerous strange stories about the disaster and being accused of not doing his job correctly by his former boss, Mohamed Al-Fayed.
