Mahershala Ali (born February 16, 1974 in Oakland, California, United States), is an American actor who rose to prominence in the 2010s and received an Academy Award for his emotional and nuanced performance as the fatherly heroin dealer Juan in the film Moonlight (2016).
Ali was born and raised in Hayward, California. His father left the family when Ali was a baby to pursue a career as a dancer, and his mother was a Baptist minister. Ali received a basketball scholarship from St. Mary’s College in California. He began engaging in poetry slams when he was there, and he also appeared in a production of the play Spunk (based on Zora Neale Hurston’s stories). He converted to the Amadiyyah sect of Islam and changed his last name to Ali while he was there.
