The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are one of the most successful sports franchises in Oregon’s history.. Over a 17-year period, the Volcanoes won seven divisional championships, five Northwest League championships, and saw 112 players from the Northwest League make their way to the big leagues, including Buster Posey and Tim Lincecum as well as Buster Posey’s younger brother, Pablo Sandoval.

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, like the Salem Senators, were transplanted from Bellingham, Washington to Salem. The Bellingham Giants were relocated to Keizer in 1997 and a new stadium, Volcanoes Stadium, was erected by Volcanoes owners Jerry and Lisa Walker and Bill Tucker. The Volcanoes played their whole season in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League of Professional Baseball, and they will continue to do so through 2020.

Class A Short Season Best American Franchise in 2001, National Team of the Year in 2007 and Best Promotion in Minor League Baseball in 2017 have all been given to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. After the 2006 Volcanoes set an all-time Northwest League record of 55-21 (.724), the 2007 Volcanoes surpassed it with a 57-19 record (.750). There were no days in which the Volcanoes were not in first place over the whole season in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009!

This year marks the Volcanoes’ 20th year hosting the award-winning Cancer Awareness Weekend. Lisa Walker, owner of Volcanoes and a cancer survivor, and Dr. Bud Pierce, an oncologist, came up with the idea for this well-known weekend to commemorate cancer survivors with on-field ceremonies and gifts. At the 2005 Baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas, Lisa was named Rawlings National Woman Executive of the Year for her efforts to recognize cancer sufferers.

After many years of recognizing and honoring our military personnel and veterans during the Volcanoes’ annual 4th of July Patriotic Tribute, Jerry Howard was awarded the Charles K. Murphy National Patriot Award during the Baseball Winter Meetings, held in San Diego, California.

This year marked another milestone for the Volcanoes organization, as Mickey Walker, son of Jerry and Lisa Walker, was chosen CEO and a new generation now oversees the Volcanoes. Yes, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are still running strong, and the larger Willamette Valley still has plenty of opportunities for fun, safe, and wholesome family time. This storied franchise is still “PLAYING BALL” because of the Walkers and their legions of devoted followers.

As Major League Baseball (MLB) and its 30 MLB teams announced a dramatic restructure of baseball’s Minor League system, shrinking from 160 teams to 120 teams across the country, the demise of Class A Short-Season baseball in Salem-Keizer became official on Wednesday, December 9.

When the San Francisco Giants announced Wednesday that the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes would no longer be their Single-A club, the connection between the Volcanoes and the Giants was over.

The Northwest League, which had eight clubs, was reduced to a six-team Class A league as part of the restructuring. Six teams will be added to the Northwest League in 2021: Vancouver, Everett, Tri-City, Spokane, Hillsboro, and Eugene. Boise and Salem-Keizer are two of the 160 locations that Major League Baseball has pledged to play baseball in.

These specifics are currently being worked on, but they should be released soon. The Bellingham Giants, a Minor League Baseball affiliate in Washington state, began play in Bellingham in 1995. In 1997, the San Francisco Giants relocated to a new stadium in Salem-Keizer, and the Volcanoes were born.

Owner Jerry Walker described the team’s recent success as “a wonderful run.” At least 112 players from the Volcanoes’ career as an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants ended up playing in Major League Baseball.
