rock opera pioneers the Who, a prominent and influential British rock band from the 1960s and 1970s. With the exception of Keith Moon, the band’s four founding members were Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle (all born in London in 1944 and 1945 respectively), as well as drummer Keith Moon (born August 23, 1946 in London and died September 7, 1978 in London). Even when their instruments were demolished, the Who firmly stated that they advocated for using violent wrath as a rock cathartic experience.
The Who were predominantly a singles band until 1967’s The Who Sell Out, a satirical concept album presented as a pirate radio broadcast. Although they had eight top ten singles between 1965 and 1967 in the United Kingdom, their lone Billboard top ten song in the United States was “I Can See for Miles,” published in 1967. While serialising The Boy Who Heard Music in 2005 and 2006, Townshend also composed “Wire & Glass,” a mini-opera that was included on Endless Wire (2006), the band’s first new album since 1982.
