Benjamin Millepied (born June 15, 1977) is a French choreographer and dancer who has lived and worked in the United States since 1995, when he joined the New York City Ballet as a soloist in 1998 and a principal in 2002. He’s also choreographed pieces for other prominent companies and devised choreography for them. In 2011, he left the NYCB.
He founded and led the LA Dance Project from 2011 to 2014. From October 2014 to 2016, he was the Director of Dance at the Paris Opera Ballet, where he resigned in 2016. He is best recognised for his role as a dancer in the film Black Swan (2010), which he choreographed and starred in.
Millepied took courses at the School of American Ballet (SAB) in the summer of 1992 and returned to full-time study in 1993, thanks to a scholarship from the French Ministry of Culture (Bourse Lavoisier or Lavoisier Scholarship). Millepied was trained by choreographer Jerome Robbins early in his career, who took an interest in him. He got the Prix de Lausanne and a prominent role in Jerome Robbins’ debut of 2 and 3 Part Inventions at SAB’s Spring Workshop in 1994.
In 2011, Millepied established and directed L.A. Dance Project, which received a two-year commission from Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Los Angeles Music Center. The annual operational budget for the company is around $1 million. The firm was founded by Millepied, composer Nico Muhly, producer Charles Fabius, composer Nicholas Britell, and Matthieu Humery. With the goal of presenting new works throughout the city, L.A. Dance Project secured a full-time residency at Los Angeles Theatre Center in 2012. The Music Center commissioned L.A. Dance Project’s first performance, which took place on September 22, 2012 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Millepied and Amanda Wells of the L.A. Dance Project performed a 30-minute duet called “Framework” at the Museum of Contemporary Art later that year. Moving Parts, a Millepied debut with a score by Muhly and visual design by painter Christopher Wool, was featured in the dance collective’s first programme. A revival of Merce Cunningham’s 1964 Winterbranch, a movement exploration of falling bodies set to a mostly two-note score by La Monte Young, and William Forsythe’s Quintett, a 1993 study in loss and hope set to avant-garde composer Gavin Bryar’s composition Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, are also featured on the programme. Rodarte, Barbara Kruger, and Alex Israel, a modern California painter and video artist, are among Millepied’s partners.
Millepied met actress Natalie Portman on the set of Black Swan in early 2009 and reportedly left his live-in partner, Isabella Boylston, a lead dancer with the American Ballet Theatre, to pursue a relationship with her. On August 4, 2012, Millepied and Portman married in a Jewish ceremony in Big Sur, California. After Millepied obtained the role of director of dance with the Paris Opera Ballet, the family moved to Paris for a while. They have two children: a son named Aleph (born in 2011) and a daughter named Amalia (born in 2012). (b. 2017). Millepied announced in January 2014 that he was in the process of converting to Judaism (his wife’s faith). The family relocated from Paris to Los Angeles in 2016.
