David W. MacLennan (born 1959) is the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Cargill, an American corporation. MacLennan graduated from Amherst College with a BA in English and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago. Since 2013, when he succeeded Greg Page as chairman and CEO of Cargill, MacLennan has served as the company’s chairman and CEO. Kathleen MacLennan is his wife, and they have three adult children.

He began his Cargill career in the Finance Markets Division in 1991, where he assisted in the formation of Cargill’s proprietary financial business in distressed asset investing and trading. He worked in the Minneapolis and London offices. He relocated to Geneva to lead Cargill Energy after serving as Chief Financial Officer of the Financial Markets Division. Before becoming Chief Financial Officer in 2008 and Chief Operating Officer in 2011, he worked for Cargill Protein and Food Ingredients.
Prior to joining Cargill, he worked in the futures and securities industry in Chicago as a runner, phone clerk, and risk manager, where he learned the financial and commodities trading business from the ground up. He was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Board of Options Exchange, and later in his career, he worked at USBancorp Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis as president of fixed income capital markets.
MacLennan is a member of the boards of Ecolab, Caterpillar, the the boards of various public firms, as well as non-profit organisations such as Youth Frontiers and College Possible. He graduated fromMinnesota Business Partnership, and the Board of Trustees of Amherst College, as well as the executive committee of The Business Council. In support of his concern for the needs of underprivileged youth and their access to education, he has served on Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in English and an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Chicago.
