Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter is an Israeli-American businessman and entrepreneur who was born on December 1, 1942. He is Marvel Entertainment’s Chairman and CEO Emeritus. He was the owner of Remington Products and Marvel Toys, among other businesses.
He created Odd Lot Trading, a wholesaler and reseller of closeout items, with a new partner, Bernard Marden, and by using his expertise as a wholesaler. They sold Odd Lot to Revco Discount Drug Stores in May 1984 in exchange for 12% of Revco equity. He immediately challenged Revco management for control of the company, but was turned down after receiving positive response. Perlmutter and his partner threatened a hostile takeover, but ultimately decided not to go through with it and sold their shares to Revco for $120 million.
Perlmutter had a close relationship with Coleco Entertainment Corporation’s executives since he had been purchasing unsold inventory from them for a long time. Payment conditions were frequently unique, as is normal in the industry. Perlmutter would purchase unsold inventory from Coleco in exchange for 50% cash and 50% “barter advertising credits” (basically a promise to pay for the future advertising expenses of Coleco). Perlmutter received $144 million in products, paid $73 million in cash, and provided $71 million in barter advertising credits to be paid in the future over a four-year period.
In 1988, he recognised an opportunity as Coleco suffered with debt as a result of the introduction of the personal computer, which had an impact on video game sales. Perlmutter paid $50 million for all of Coleco’s senior debt (with a face value of $85 million), effectively making them senior to their bondholders in the event of a bankruptcy. Despite his belief that a Coleco bankruptcy was likely, Perlmutter believed that the value of the company’s assets should be adequate to cover the full $85 million he had paid for it. Coleco filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 1988. Suing Perlmutter for fraudulent conveyance over the barter advertising credits (which made up a large item on Coleco’s balance sheet), the bondholders were suspicious of Perlmutter’s tight relationship with Coleco’s management. Coleco was sold to Hasbro Corporation for $85 million after protracted negotiations, and Perlmutter agreed to take $64 million for his now $90 million claim (principal plus interest) in exchange for the lawsuit being dropped.
Isaac Perlmutter was also a co-owner of Toy Biz alongside Avi Arad, having purchased the company’s forerunner from Charan Industries in January 1990. The Marvel deal reconstituted Toy Biz, Inc., with Perlmutter retaining ownership of the old Toy Biz, Inc., which was renamed Zib, Inc. Toy Biz International Ltd., a Hong Kong firm, and Perlmutter’s portion of the new Toy Biz, Inc. were controlled by Zib.
Perlmutter stepped down as Marvel Studios’ executive producer in September 2015. Disney believed that the studio head, Kevin Feige, should report directly to Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, so that all of Disney’s cinematic properties, including Pixar and Lucasfilm, were managed as a single entity. Feige’s “frustration” with working with Perlmutter, as well as several claimed contentious words and acts by Perlmutter, such as replacing Terrence Howard as James Rhodes with Don Cheadle because black people “look the same,” prompted the restructure. “Ike Perlmutter neither discriminates nor cares about diversity,” a source familiar with his creative approach said. “He only cares about what he thinks will earn money.” Up until 2019, Jeph Loeb, who controls Marvel Television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s television properties, reported to Perlmutter.
Trump had informally permitted three members of his Mar-a-Lago club to drive policy at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and provide instructions to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Peter O’Rourke, according to non-profit journalism outlet ProPublica. The Mar-a-Lago Crowd, which includes Perlmutter, was named as one of the three. The author of the article obtained “hundreds of documents” through the Freedom of Information Act, revealing that the three were in daily contact with the VA,
