James Patrick Page OBE (born 9 January 1944) is an English musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer best known for being the guitarist and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin, which attained international acclaim.
Page is known for his prolific guitar riffs, which include a variety of alternate guitar tunings, technical and melodic solos, aggressive, distorted guitar tones, and folk and eastern-influenced acoustic work. He’s also known for playing his guitar with a cello bow on occasion to add a droning sound layer to his music.
Page began his career as a studio session musician in London, and by the mid-1960s, he was one of the most in-demand session guitarists in the country, alongside Big Jim Sullivan. From 1966 until 1968, he was a member of the Yardbirds. He formed Led Zeppelin when the Yardbirds disbanded, and the band was active from 1968 through 1980. Following the death of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, he was a member of a variety of bands, including XYZ, the Firm, the Honeydrippers, Coverdale–Page, and Page and Plant, in the 1980s and 1990s. Since 2000, Page has performed live and in studio with a variety of artists, as well as taking part in a one-off Led Zeppelin reunion in 2007, which was documented in the 2012 concert film Celebration Day. He appeared in the 2008 documentary It Might Get Loud alongside the Edge and Jack White.
This “other guitarist” was a few years his senior named Rod Wyatt, who would practise at Page’s house with another boy named Pete Calvert; Page would practise for six or seven hours on some days and would always bring his guitar to secondary school, only to have it confiscated and returned to him after class. Scotty Moore and James Burton, which he’d purchased with money saved from his summer milk round and which had a pickup so it could be amplified, but his first solid-bodied electric guitar was a second-hand 1959 Futurama Grazioso, which was later replaced by a Fender Telecaster, a model he’d seen Buddy Holly playing on TV and a real-life example of which he had seen
Page used to perform at the Marquee Club alongside bands like Cyril Davies’ All Stars, Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, and fellow guitarists Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton when he was still a student. Jet Harris and Tony Meehan’s recording “Diamonds,” which soared to No. 1 on the singles chart in early 1963, was his first session for the label.
