Priscilla Chan (born February 24, 1985) is an American philanthropist and former paediatrician. In December 2015, she and her husband, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, Inc., launched the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, pledging to transfer 99 percent of their Facebook shares, which were worth at $45 billion at the time. She graduated from Harvard University and the University of California, San Francisco, with a medical degree.
She taught science for a year after graduation at the private Harker School before enrolling in medical school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2008. In 2016, she co-founded “The Primary School,” a nonprofit organisation in East Palo Alto, California, with Meredith Liu to provide K–12 education as well as prenatal care. Chan is the founder and CEO of “The Primary School,” a tuition-free private school.
Chan is in charge of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s day-to-day operations. Her charitable ambitions are centred on education, healthcare, and research, all of which are intertwined with her personal history. She is thought to have had a significant influence on her husband’s generosity. In March 2017, she was one of six finalists for The San Francisco Chronicle’s third annual Visionary of the Year award. The award recognises CEOs that work to improve the world while simultaneously driving change via the use of new, creative business methods.
Zuckerberg and Chan have donated $4.6 billion to charity, including $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital, where Chan previously worked. They donated 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in 2013, worth at about $970 million. The pair topped The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of the 50 most generous American donors for that year. They also donated $120 million to San Francisco Bay Area public schools.
