An ex-soccer player for the United States national team, Mia Hamm (born Mariel Margaret Hamm-Garciaparra) won the Women’s World Cup twice and the Olympic gold medal twice. In addition to her given name, she goes as “Mia Hamm.” She spent 17 years as a member of the U.S. women’s national soccer team and held the record for most goals scored in international tournaments until June 2013. Besides being named FIFA’s World Player of the Year for two consecutive years, Mia Hamm also made a record by being named Soccer USA’s Female Athlete of the Year a record-tying five times.

She also had a prominent role in promoting the development of women’s professional soccer in the United States. She has made 276 appearances for the U.S. national team, putting her in third place all-time, while her 104 career assists rank her first (144). She was the first female player inducted into the World Football Hall of Fame and was named the Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation for two years running. In addition to being a co-owner of the Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer, she is the global ambassador for the soccer club Barcelona FC.

She also joined the National Soccer Hall of Fame’s board of directors in 2014. She also established the Mia Hamm Foundation to support bone marrow research. Mia Hamm was Bill Hamm, an Air Force pilot, and Stephanie Hamm, their fourth child. She entered this world on the 17th of March, 1972, in Selma, Alabama. Since her father served in the United States Air Force, the family relocated frequently as she was a child. Out of the five kids, she’s the baby.

When she and her family moved to Florence, Italy, she decided to give soccer a shot for the first time. The University of Texas was her first experience with organized soccer. While she and her adopted brother Garrett pursued sports careers, their father served as a mentor and guide. During her time at the junior high she attended, she excelled as a member of the boys’ football team. She also participated in soccer for the Texas Notre Dame Catholic High School. She was only 15 years old when she made her US national team debut in 1987, competing at the US Olympic Festival. To that point, she had been the youngest woman to ever play for the U.S. women’s national soccer team.

She played a pivotal role on the 1989 Virginia state champion Lake Braddock Secondary School soccer team in Burke, Virginia. From 1989 until 1994, she attended UNC on scholarship and played a crucial role for the Tar Heels women’s soccer team, helping them win four NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. Mia Hamm represented the United States at the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China at the tender age of 19. She was the youngest member of the team at the time. She not only won the game-winning goal but also played a key role in the team’s first-game triumph.

They reached the final after beating Norway in a close game and then overcame Germany in the semifinals to win their first World Cup. In 1995, her second time competing in the World Cup, she scored a goal, but the score was tied with China. In the second encounter, the American team defeated Denmark.

They beat Norway to make the semifinals but then lost against them in the finals. U.S. women’s soccer team beat Denmark, Sweden, and Norway in 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, the first time that women’s soccer was an Olympic sport. Hamm got hurt in the final game against China and had to be taken off the field. Regardless, the American team won the gold medal at the Olympics for the first time in their country’s history.

With her 108th goal for the United States in 1999, she surpassed the previous record held by an Italian player, Elisabetta Vignotto. Prior to June of 2013, when American great Abby Wambach surpassed her, Hamm held the record. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, she helped set up the game-winning goal for the United States team against Norway.

After beating Nigeria, they advanced to the final four thanks to Hamm’s game-winning goal versus Brazil. With this goal, she surpassed the previous record for the most goals scored by a player of either gender in an international competition. Norway beat the United States in the finals, and the Americans ended up with the silver medal.

In 2001, she was a founder member of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA). The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) was the country’s first professional women’s soccer league. For three years, from 2001 to 2003, she played basketball for the Washington Freedom. She was justly celebrated as the league’s shining star throughout its entire existence.

In a game against Australia in July 2004, she got her 151st career international goal. This goal gave her the all-time record for most goals scored by a player, male or female, in international competitions. The record still holds, after all, this time. Her record stood until 2013. Hamm announced her retirement on May 14, 2004, when she was 32 years old. It was in December of 2004 that she played her final international match.

She participated in 42 international competitions with the U.S. women’s national soccer team and scored 14 goals during her time there. She made 276 appearances for the US national team. Once in China, once in Sweden, and once in the United States (2001), she competed in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was the team captain at the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta, 2000 in Sydney, and 2004 in Athens. While playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels women’s soccer team, Mia Hamm set a new record by being named ACC Player of the Year a record three consecutive years. As if that weren’t enough, she won the ACC Female Athlete of the Year award for a record-tying two years in a row.

Two years in a row, the Women’s Sports Foundation named her its Sportswoman of the Year. Nike recognized Hamm’s contributions to the company by dedicating its largest office building after him in 1999. In the year 2000, she was recognized as one of the top three female soccer players of the 20th century by being named to the FIFA Women’s Team of the Century. Furthermore, from 1994 to 1998, she was named Female Athlete of the Year by the United States Soccer Federation. She won three ESPYs, the most notable of which were Player of the Year in Soccer and Female Athlete of the Year. She was acknowledged as one of the top active soccer players and was included on the FIFA 100 list in the year 2004.

Both the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame have inducted her: the former in 2006 and the latter in 2008. Upon being selected, she entered the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007. Her entry into the World Football Hall of Fame took place in the year 2013. Later that year, she was named to the US Soccer’s USWNT All-Time Best XI. She was presented with the Golden Foot Legends Award that year. Mia Hamm married US Marine Corps chopper pilot Christiaan Corry in 1995; they filed for divorce in 2001. Nomar Garciaparra, a shortstop for the Boston Red Sox, married his longtime girlfriend on November 22, 2003. They have a son named Garrett Anthony and two daughters named Grace Isabella and Ava Caroline.

She has written the best-selling nonfiction book “Go For the Goal: A Champion’s Guide to Winning in Soccer and Life” and the award-winning novel “Winners Never Quit.” In memory of her adoptive brother Garrett, who passed away at a young age in 1997 from aplastic anemia, she founded the Mia Hamm Foundation.

The foundation’s mission includes both public education on bone marrow diseases and financial support for people in need of transplants. It also creates new opportunities for women to rise in the ranks of the sports industry. She was a spokesperson for many brands during her career as a professional soccer player, including Gatorade, Nike, Dreyer’s Ice Cream, and Pepsi. Famous magazines like Sports Illustrated, Time, and People have all featured her on their covers.

She also made appearances on numerous other shows like “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” and many more. ESPN’s SportsCentury and Biography have both featured articles about her. Patti Phillips, founder of the Women Leaders Performance Institute and CEO of Women Leaders in College Sports, will chair a question and answer session with Hamm following the lecture. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, as it is free of charge. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis due to a limited number of seats.

Previous to this, Hamm had the record for most goals scored by a player in an international competition. There is a consensus that she is the best female soccer player ever. She won the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year title on two separate occasions and the ESPY Award for Female Athlete of the Year on two separate occasions.

She retired from professional soccer after an outstanding 17-year career and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame just three years later in 2007. In that same year, ESPN named her the greatest female athlete of the last four decades (2012). Mia Hamm’s sustained success has made her an inspiration to young women who aspire to compete at the top levels of athletics.
