An ex-soccer player for the United States national team, Mia Hamm (born Mariel Margaret Hamm-Garciaparra) won the Women’s World Cup twice and the Olympic gold medal twice. From 1989 until 1994, she attended UNC on scholarship and played a crucial role for the Tar Heels women’s soccer team, helping them win four NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. Upon being selected, she entered the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007. Her entry into the World Football Hall of Fame took place in the year 2013. Later that year, she was named to the US Soccer’s USWNT All-Time Best XI. She was presented with the Golden Foot Legends Award that year. Mia Hamm married US Marine Corps chopper pilot Christiaan Corry in 1995; they filed for divorce in 2001. Nomar Garciaparra, a shortstop for the Boston Red Sox, married his longtime girlfriend on November 22, 2003. They have a son named Garrett Anthony and two daughters named Grace Isabella and Ava Caroline.
She has written the best-selling nonfiction book “Go For the Goal: A Champion’s Guide to Winning in Soccer and Life” and the award-winning novel “Winners Never Quit.” In memory of her adoptive brother Garrett, who passed away at a young age in 1997 from aplastic anemia, she founded the Mia Hamm Foundation.
The foundation’s mission includes both public education on bone marrow diseases and financial support for people in need of transplants. It also creates new opportunities for women to rise in the ranks of the sports industry. She was a spokesperson for many brands during her career as a professional soccer player, including Gatorade, Nike, Dreyer’s Ice Cream, and Pepsi. Famous magazines like Sports Illustrated, Time, and People have all featured her on their covers.

Previous to this, Hamm had the record for most goals scored by a player in an international competition. There is a consensus that she is the best female soccer player ever. She retired from professional soccer after an outstanding 17-year career and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame just three years later in 2007. In that same year, ESPN named her the greatest female athlete of the last four decades (2012).
