Peter Gabriel is considered one of the most important singers and musicians of his time. ‘Sledgehammer’ from the album ‘So’ is one of its unforgettable hits. Interestingly, he was initially a drummer and had several rock bands. Once famous Mike Rutherford said, ‘Pete was—and I believe still is—a frustrated drummer.’

This was due to the poor sound strengthening system. He realized that only by drawing attention through other means could he attract crowds to listen to him. So he drew fantastic costumes. He left ‘Genesis’ and began his solo career. For a while, he became interested in percussion in the world and since then has collaborated with many famous musicians. In addition to music, he was also a humanitarian activist for various causes. He has a long-time partnership with ‘Amnesty International’ and has worked extensively for it. He also declared support for the British Labor Party when it won Tony Blair’s landslide margin. He was married twice on a personal level and had a live relationship.

Peter Brian Gabriel was born in Chobham, Surrey, England to Edith Irene Allen and Ralph Parton Gabriel. His dad was an electrical engineer, and his mom taught him at a young age to play the piano.

He attended Cable House, a private elementary school in Woking, Surrey. After that, he went to St. Andrews Prep School in Horsell, then to Charterhouse School. He founded the ‘Genesis’ band in 1967 in partnership with Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and Chris Stewart, Charterhouse lads.He helped progressive rock progress through his newly formed band to new theatrical levels.

His biggest success with ‘Genesis’ was probably the 1974 concept album ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.’ In this album, he was the lead singer and lyricist.

Director William Friedkin approached Peter for a small film. In 1975 he left the band for this film briefly, only to return one week later. A number of his fans were shocked when he suddenly left the band.

After the news of his wife’s pregnancy, he permanently left the band in 1976. Next year, he debuted solo with the single ‘Solsbury Hill’ that was an instant hit when it came out.The second album, titled by the guitarist Robert Fripp, was released in 1978. It was an experimental album and didn’t sell very much.

His new interest in world music, especially in percussion, has gone into the third self-titled studio album. It is the first album to use ‘gated drum’ sounds on the instrument with Phil Collins.

In 1982, the album “Security” was released, which largely due to the single “Shock the Monkey” became a huge commercial success. It sold well despite stunning videos and strange sounds.

In 1985, another solo album called ‘So’ was composed and released the following year. A single called ‘Sledgehammer’ was very successful and used stop-action animation in its video. In 1986 he embarked on a benefit tour for Amnesty International and basked on the success of ‘So.’ During this tour, he worked with Sting and U2 musicians.

He released “Passion: Music for Christ’s Last Temptation” in 1989, which he composed and used widely. This album was very successful and was awarded subsequently.

After this album, there was a break, during which he underwent many personal upheavals. His album ‘Us’ in 1992 echoed his tensions and produced rather darker sounds and singles.

During the 1990s, he participated in the work of the Real World Record Label, his first company. With the group, he has created several multimedia projects, such as ‘Xplora’ and ‘Big Blue Ball.’

During this time, there were few singing projects for films. The song ‘That’ll Do’ was sung in 1998 for ‘Babe: Pig in the City.’

He released a solo album called ‘Up’ in 2002, after a decade. In Canada it was certified ‘gold,’ but it did not sell in the United States as well. This album was followed by lots of tours and two ‘Growing Up Live’ and ‘Still Growing Up: Live & Unwrapped’ concert DVDs.

In 2010, there was the release of an album called ‘Scratch my Back,’ covering songs sung among others by Radiohead, Paul Simon, and David Bowie. This was followed by the release of ‘New Blood’ the following year.

In 2012, 25 years since the release of his album ‘So’ have been celebrated. The sales of several deluxe versions of this record resulted. ‘So’ Studio album of Peter, released 1986, was charted on UK chart at No. 1 and on US Billboard 200 at No. 2. It has been triple in the United Kingdom and five times in the United States.

In 1987, he was awarded the ‘Best British Male Solo Artist’ British Phonographic Industry Award for his solo album ‘So.’ The Music Fraternity, which presented him with the ‘Music Industry Trusts’ Award in 2004, has recognized his lasting impact on music. In 2006 he was awarded the Man of Peace Award by the Nobel Peace Prize winners. From 1971 to 1987, he married Jill Moore and the couple has two daughters. He is believed to have lived with actress Rosanna Arquette for some time between the 1980s and 1990s, but both never married.

In 2002, he got married to Meabh Flynn and he has two sons with him: Isaac Ralph and Luc. He continues to be a soldier for the cause of world music, apart from his own music. He was involved in training Westerners on Yungchen Lamho, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Youssou N’dour. His work with ‘Witness’ was widely accepted as a non-profit organization to educate people on human rights abuse.

Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 and became deeply interested in world-music rhythms and textures, reflected in four eponymous albums (the latest was released for its American release, 1982, Security). Then Gabriel announced his political convictions in songs such as “Games Without Border” and “Biko.” This two-sided participation in Third World affairs led to the foundation of the WOMAD Festival of 1982 and Real World Records of 1989.  The work of Gabriel was also characterized by an imaginative visual component.

In 1994, Gabriel published Xplora 1, one of a major artist’s first media CD-ROMs, and six years later OVO, a multimedia performance for the Millennium Dome in London. When he created On Demand Distribution, an internet service that became one of Europe’s leading online music providers in 2000, Gabriel showed that he remained ahead of the technological curve. New material emerged from the Real World studios as Gabriel contributed single songs to film soundtracks or as a guest performer appeared on the albums of other artists. He released Long Walk Home in 2002, his film score of Rabbit-Proof Fence, and then followed up on his first full studio release 10 years later that year. The first recalled Passion’s work, while the last recalled a dark meditation on loss and longing.

In 2008, the Big Blue Ball was created, a 17-year-old international music project, with the resultant album performed by Gabriel, Sinead O’Connor, Joseph Arthur, and numerous international artists. Again, Gabriel distinguished himself for his soundtrack work with WALL5-0E by Pixar Animation (2008). Gabriel worked with the composer Thomas Newman to make “Down to Earth,” an up-market track that won the Grammy Award in 2009 for the best song for a film.

New Blood (2011) was also ornamented by symphonic orchestration and Gabriel himself reinterpreted selections from his catalog. Live Blood, a 2011 concert recording, was released in 2012. In 2019, he released two compilation albums: Rated PG, a collection of songs that he contributed to films, and Flotsam & Jetsam, which included B-sides, rarities, and previously unreleased songs.

In 2008, Gabriel received Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award for decades of support. The following year he was awarded the Polar Music Prize for his lifetime achievement by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, stating that Gabriel “redefines the very concept” of popular music. Gabriel was introduced as a member of Genesis (2010) and a solo artist to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2014).
