Her first solo album ‘Bella Donna’ charted on the ‘U.S. Billboard’ at #1 and received platinum certifications in the months following its release. Her second album ‘The Wild Heart’ was also certified platinum by Nicks as a soloist. She had lots of music industry friends and invited them to play music for their albums. Her next album ‘Rock a Little’ was also a huge hit and was certified platinum like her predecessors. However, the stress of working so hard affected her mental and physical well-being and she developed a problem of drug addiction. The talented singer struggled hard to overcome their drug abuse and finally managed to put this disturbing part of her life behind her. She is prolific and has produced over 40 ‘Top 50’ hits with sales of more than 140 million albums.
Stevie Nicks was born to Jess Nicks, a corporate executive, and Barbara, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA on 26 May 1948. She lived in a large family and she was taught to sing and play guitar by her musically loving grandfather.
The nature of her father’s job moved her family a lot, she spent her childhood in Phoenix, El Paso, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles. For her 16th birthday, she was given a guitar and spent her teens writing and playing music.
In 1975, Nicks and Buckingham joined the ‘Fleetwood Mac band, Mick Fleetwood. Their first album, ‘Fleetwood Mac,’ was released in 1975. Nicks sang ‘Rhiannon,’ the hit single.’ Rumors’ was released in 1977. The band members had a difficult time and hoped for success. The album had its single, ‘Dreams,’ which was a bestseller and was awarded a ‘Grammy Award.’
She performed with the band before she started solo careers in ‘Tusk’ (1979) and ‘Live’ (1980); she continued to perform for the band in the future. Her first solo album ‘Bella Donna’ was released in 1981, culminating in ‘U.S. Billboard Chart’ at No. 1. The album has received several certifications for platinum and has established it as a solo star.
Her next album was ‘The Wild Heart’ in 1983, then ‘Rock a Little’ in 1985. Both albums have been accredited as platinum. She took a period of four years from her solo career and returned in 1989 with ‘The Other Side of the Mirror.’ The hit single ‘Rooms on Fire’ was included.
Her problem of cocaine addiction worsened during this time and she became dependent on a sedative called Klonopin. She toured extensively in the UK, the US, and Europe after the album’s release but claimed she had no recollection of the tours because of her problems with medicine.
She came up with the album ‘Street Angel’ in 1994 following a very difficult period both in her personal and professional life. The album was not good, forcing her to take the time to overcome her dependence on drugs.’Fleetwood Mac’s band members gathered for a tour entitled ‘The Dance’ to mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s very successful Rumors album. The tour was an enormous hit and gave Nicks the confidence to move forward.
Since then, she has toured with other bands like ‘The Pretenders.’ She also performed ‘Lust for Life’ in Lana Del Ray’s album. Her first album ‘Bella Donna’ (1981) culminated in chart No.1 and received several platinum certifications. It had hit individuals such as ‘Edge of Seventeen and ‘Leather and Lace.’
The album, The Wild Heart (1983), featured several prominent musicians and hits such as ‘Stand Back,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ It has been certified in the United States for double platinum. Her 1985 album ‘Rock a Little,’ which was accredited as gold in the United States, was platinum certified only 1 month after its release. The hit singles ‘Talk to Me’ and ‘I Can’t Wait’ were brought forth. For several years she was in a relationship with Lindsey Buckingham before she broke up.
She married her best friend’s widower in order to look after her friend’s baby left behind. Although the marriage didn’t last, she had a good relationship with her former stepson. She launched “Stevie Nicks’ Band of Soldiers,” a charitable organization that works to improve injured soldiers.
In April 2019, she became the first woman to be inducted twice, once before as a member of the ‘Fleetwood Mac band in 1998, in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was named ‘The Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll’ by ‘Rolling Stone magazine. She was rumored to be a witch. She is known for making platform boots in the general public fashionable.
Stevie Nicks was born in Arizona, Phoenix. She showed her grandfather a love and ability to play music and sing country and western duets when she was four years old. After moving to San Francisco, she began writing songs and performing at Menlo-Atherton High School, where she met Lindsey Buckingham, her future longtime friend. After the failure of smaller projects, she and Lindsey signed “Buckingham-Nicks” with Polydor Records and produced their partnership. It flopped, and the two (now lovers), but not before Mick Fleetwood invited them to join the Fleetwood Mac, were dropped from the label. Two years later, in 1975, the self-titled album of Fleetwood Mac topped the charts, led by “Rhiannon” Stevie. The band’s success and Stevie’s success were immediate. The legendary “Rumors” album was released in 1977, and the relationship between Stevie and Lindsey had come to an end. Their solo career of Stevie began in 1981 and was immediately successful. She had too much stress from her personal career and staying with Fleetwood Mac, and was subject to cocaine and prescription medications. After receiving her addiction treatment, she vowed to never play again but was lured out of her retirement at the 1997 Fleetwood Mac meeting and still performs, writes, and records.
Stevie Nicks, a member of Fleetwood Mac, wrote the iconic song “Silver Springs” for their album “Rumours” in 1977. However, it was not included in the final release, causing her much frustration. A few years later, Nicks requested to use the song for her “best of” solo album “Timespace – The Best of Stevie Nicks,” which ultimately led to her temporary departure from the band.
In 1998, Fleetwood Mac was nominated for “Silver Springs” during their reunion tour, indicating the song’s enduring popularity.
Nicks’ health struggles also impacted her career. She underwent breast implant surgery in 1976, and the implants were removed in 1994 due to complications that led to the Epstein-Barr virus. She also had humble beginnings, once working as a waitress and cleaning the house of engineer/producer Keith Olson.
Before her success with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were part of a band called “Fritz” and opened for legendary musicians Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Despite her health challenges and early struggles, Nicks went on to achieve massive success. As a solo artist and with Fleetwood Mac, she produced over 40 top 50 hits and sold over 140 million albums worldwide. However, she also battled addiction, seeking treatment for cocaine addiction in 1986 and taking tranquilizers to prevent relapse.
Nicks’ debut solo album “Bella Donna” spent over 150 weeks on the Billboard album chart, including one week at #1 and 26 weeks in the top 50. It was the best-selling album by a female artist in the United States for two years and has sold over six million copies.
