Sydney “Syd” Bennett is a Los Angeles, California-based alternative R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, record producer, DJ, and audio engineer. She was born on April 23, 1992, in the United States of America. In addition to her work as a solo artist, Syd had previously been a part of the alternative hip hop group Odd Future from Los Angeles and is now the main singer for the neo-soul band The Internet. Travis “Taco” Bennett, a member of the band Odd Future, has her as his elder sister. Her recording contract is present with Columbia Records.

Bennett’s passion for music was shaped in part by the fact that he came from a musically talented family. Her mother had a passing interest in becoming a DJ, and her uncle is a reggae producer working in Jamaica. She went on to say that “I began wishing that I could claim credit for some of my favorite songs. That was when I started to create my own – I only started singing my own songs after I truly started composing.

Bennett built a small music studio in her home when she was 14 years old and worked on sound engineering before getting into production. During the first half of her high school years, Syd attended Palisades Charter High School. Bennett felt left out and had few friends at Palisades, so she transferred to the Hamilton Music Academy, which she considered a more open-minded school.

In this additional episode from 2018, former host Sam Sanders has a conversation with singer-songwriter Syd about her work with the hip-hop collective Odd Future and now with her own band, The Internet. They discuss how she produced The Internet’s fourth album, Hive Mind, as well as how she incorporates her sexuality into the writing of her songs.

It’s all in the title for anyone wondering why it took Syd five years to release her sophomore album Broken Hearts Club. The Internet frontwoman, who is two weeks shy of her 30th birthday, experienced her “first real broken heart” — one she admits she never saw coming. She reveals that fact with a laugh in the present day, as she sits on the floor of her Los Angeles home with two foster dogs. The painful ordeal caused her to take a long break and put the creation of her album.

Although Broken Hearts Club was released five years after its predecessor, the artist took approximately two years to complete it. During that time frame, Syd took a three-month break, restarted the record, removed and added songs to the tracklist, wrote new songs, and took her sweet time with the mixing process “because sometimes you need time to really see how they sit with you.” Although both Syd and the album were going through major overhauls at the same time.

she found that the resentment she felt from the breakup was being reflected in the music she was creating. “I didn’t want to go out like that,” she says. All of the negative emotions pushed her to self-reflect, which in turn changed her songwriting in a way that allowed her to talk about the breakup without feeling resentful. “Those couple of songs that I wrote right after the breakup was really good for me personally.

She was at the mercy of the several producers she was working with and the issues they were going through, so it took her some time to dig through their creations and find what fit her. “I don’t write to just anything. I write to what I feel,” she said. As Syd began to move on from the breakup and Broken Hearts Club began to take on an improved form, she was confronted with another challenge that is a little harder for her to control: the pandemic.

Syd believes that she generally walks the line between R&B and alternative and that those who follow a similar path like hers and The Internet are outliers. “I don’t necessarily want to fit more into one box than another,” she says. “I’m comfortable straddling that line and I’m proud of it because I feel like I’m in good company, being in an alternative space.” The album takes inspiration from a number of different factors and sources of inspiration.

The “good company” she finds herself surrounded by joins her in the new album; the guest appearances of Kehlani, Smino, and Lucky Daye the latter of whom was actually introduced to Syd by her mother all came together with time, as there were bonds already in place between her and the three. Syd is friends with Kehlani, with whom she shares the Disclosure song “Birthday,” and Smino, who sent back his contribution almost immediately.

“She introduced me to him in full,” she confirms. “I’d heard a single or two, but my mom was actually the one who was like, ‘Yo, here are the songs from his album.'” Daye’s feature, however, was a full-circle moment for both artists as the Candytrip singer initially reached out to The Internet via Instagram a few years ago. The DM remained unopened, however, because “we just don’t check our Internet Instagram.

She hopped on several collaborations, learned more about her voice during the creation of Hive Mind (“I think my voice should always be a work in progress, if anything”), and founded the wellness and meditation DAO $UEMS, Universe Eaters Meditation Society. All of this occurred despite the fact that the gap between Syd’s solo albums is a lengthy one. Despite this, she has remained a formidable face in music, fashion, and modern technology.

“He’s one of those guys that’s been to every class, he’s studied the hardest yoga and the most serious types of meditation. At the end of the day, he’s like, ‘It’s personal. It has to be what you want it to be,'” she explains. “Meditation doesn’t have to come with all these rules.” The collective is inspired by her manager who meditates and practices yoga on a daily basis.

The baristas at Syd’s local coffee shop can recite her order by heart: an espresso over ice with almond milk and a dash of vanilla. She started frequenting the café when she moved into a new apartment a year ago; her girlfriend says they come almost every day. This is just one of the many small comforts of familiarity that have served as an anchor in Syd’s life up to this point.

Her apartment in Los Angeles is only ten minutes away from the house she grew up in, the house where she first built the studio that would launch her career, the only house she has ever really known, save for the one time she rented a spot with her friend Matt Martians (and Mike G) and started her band, The Internet. Although she has traveled the world by this point, home is still where she calls it.

She had been clarifying her relationship to fame and the culture of celebrity thirty minutes earlier. Having seen some of the best and worst of what it has to offer – from unruly obsessives mobbing her in public to not being able to walk around the area outside her hotel because showgoers have lined up early – she had to sit down and assess what she really wanted: the affirming power of swarms of screaming fans, or some level of control and the peace that might come with it.

And in a city known to be a haven for the rich and the famous, both established and aspiring, there’s something refreshing about Syd’s conscious rejection of the spectacle, even though she concedes that she does crave recognition. This self-assurance has always been a part of her, which is something she claims she inherited from her father.

When asked if she anticipated that she would be able to make a living off of her art, she gives a resounding yes before adding, “the truth is, I had higher expectations for myself.” When looking back over the more than a decade-long rollercoaster of her career, one would think that there were times when she questioned what was possible. However, she doesn’t hesitate for a second when the question is brought up.

She never expected to be a solo singer, never expected to lead a band, and never expected to have a record deal of her own. Instead, she thought she’d be behind the scenes, perhaps in management or executive producing. Make no mistake, these aren’t failures nor wallowing. Calibrating and recalibrating are all a part of the process, and one of her biggest triumphs, she says, has been learning along the way.
