Mark William Calaway (born March 24, 1966) is an American retired professional wrestler better known by his ring moniker The Undertaker. From 1990 to 2020, he was most known for his WWE career.
Calaway debuted in 1987 as a gimmick for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) and several affiliate promotions, where he won the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship and the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship. He had a brief time in the mid-card as “Mean” Mark Callous after signing with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1989, before joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1990.
He’s also noted for his relationship with his in-story half-brother Kane, with whom he’s feuded or teamed as The Brothers of Destruction since 1997. The Undertaker has won the WWF/E Championship four times, the World Heavyweight Championship three times, the Hardcore Championship once, and the World Tag Team Championship six times throughout his career with the promotion. He is also one of WWE’s most prolific pay-per-view performers, having headlined many pay-per-view events, including five times at WrestleMania.
Calaway joined the World Wrestling Federation in October 1990. (WWF). On November 19, 1990, he made his debut as Kane the Undertaker at a Superstars taping. Calaway made his formal on-camera debut as a heel on November 22 at Survivor Series when he was Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team’s mystery partner. The Undertaker used his finisher, the Tombstone Piledriver, to eliminate Koko B. Ware around a minute into the contest. Before being counted out, he also eliminated Dusty Rhodes; however, his team won the match, and DiBiase was the sole survivor. Calaway was referred to as The Undertaker during the match, omitting the moniker ‘Kane,’ which was deleted shortly after the event (and was later given to another wrestler who became The Undertaker’s younger brother of the same name seven years later).
Undertaker brought his defeated opponents (nearly usually jobbers) to the back in a corpse bag. He continued to win squash bouts as he worked his way up to his first WWF rivalry with “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka.
During his absence, the WWF used video clips of people claiming to have seen The Undertaker to hype his return.
Ted DiBiase reintroduced an Undertaker to the WWF after WrestleMania X. This Undertaker, played by Calaway’s real-life cousin Brian Lee, was a false Undertaker (called “The Undertaker” by fans) who led to the real Undertaker’s return in the SummerSlam main event, as a fresh version of his Deadman character, with cool colors replacing grey and purple replacing grey. After three Tombstone Piledrivers, The Undertaker vanquished the impostor and rolled him out in the casket he had brought to ringside.
In a casket match at Survivor Series, The Undertaker beat Yokozuna. The Undertaker had a feud with members of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation for the majority of 1995. While The Undertaker was battling King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania XI (a match he won), Kama took the urn and turned it into a big gold necklace to irritate him. At SummerSlam in August, Undertaker defeated Kama in a casket match. Several weeks later, The Undertaker injured his orbital bone near his eye, necessitating surgery and a hiatus until the Survivor Series.
Paul Bearer attempted to rejoin The Undertaker in May 1997, threatening to divulge The Undertaker’s “deepest, darkest secret” to the world if he did so. When Bearer was a youngster, he accused The Undertaker of setting fire to his family’s funeral house, killing his parents and, apparently, his younger half-brother. The Undertaker disputed everything, but Bearer claimed to have proof in the shape of The Undertaker’s half-brother Kane, who had survived despite being scarred and burned. Kane was raised by Bearer after the fire, and he was institutionalized from the time of the fire until he reached maturity. Kane had been longing to inflict vengeance on his older half-brother since the fire.
Undertaker defended himself by claiming that Kane, a pyromaniac, was the one who started the fire and could not possibly have survived. During this time, Bearer unwittingly confesses to having an affair with Undertaker’s mother. As a result, The Undertaker learned that Kane was his half-brother. Until that time, Undertaker had been under the notion that Kane was entirely linked to him and his family (for the length of the father’s life). The Undertaker also made an appearance in Michinoku Pro Wrestling around this time, defeating Hakushi in a singles bout.
