Diane Hendricks did not have the privileged upbringing of a famous or powerful person when growing up. Instead, she had an unconventional upbringing, spending her formative years on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, where she learned the work ethic that would be so useful in building her successful empire.

Hendricks, who is worth an estimated $11.6 billion, topped Forbes’ list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women for the sixth year in a running, as reported last week. ABC Supply, a construction materials firm she and her late husband founded in 1982, is the primary source of her wealth. She is the current head of the business.

Hendricks, who got pregnant at 17 and had to finish her senior year of high school at home, told Forbes in 2017 that she learned her work ethic from watching her parents manage the farm around the clock. At 21, she filed for divorce from her high school love and, as a single mother, worked a variety of odd jobs in offices to make ends meet before deciding to get her real estate license and focusing all of her energy on it.

Hendricks explained that she matured rapidly after becoming a mother. But that didn’t deter me from working toward my goal. Actually, I feel like I laser-focused in on my goals even more.

Hendricks noted that some of her ambitions were quite modest, such as relocating to a city and working in a suit. Those plans changed once she met and married Ken Hendricks, a roof contractor, in the 1970s. They pooled their resources and expertise to establish ABC Supply in Beloit, Wisconsin.

As of 1994, the corporation has 100 locations worldwide. Forbes reports that it initially reached yearly revenues of over $1 billion four years after it was founded.

Hendricks has been running ABC Supply alone since her husband passed away in 2007. According to its website, the company now has more than 840 sites around the country, and Forbes ranks it as the 23rd largest private corporation in the United States. According to ABC Supply’s website, in the last five years, the company has expanded by acquiring the assets of 18 other businesses, a clear indication of its supremacy in the industry.

However, there has been some dispute around the success. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel stated that Hendricks “didn’t pay a penny in state income tax from 2012 through 2014” in 2016, the first year she topped the Forbes list. According to the report, she had no state tax liability in 2010.

That might not be against the law: Scott Bianchini, director of taxes at ABC Supply, told CNBC Make It that the company had converted from a C-corp to an S-corp during that time period. If ABC Supply paid all of its federal taxes, it might qualify for S-corporation status under federal law and C-corporation status under Wisconsin law, allowing it to avoid state income tax and perhaps cash cheques made out to Hendricks.

Hendricks is still operating out of Beloit, which is home to fewer than 37,000 people today. Forbes claims that she has spent millions revitalizing rundown neighborhoods and recruiting new businesses to the state.

Hendricks launched a local career center in 2017 that provides classes in areas like coding and construction to students in grades 7 through 12. When asked by Forbes about the program’s goals, she said they included teaching young people “the value of a job.”

Fantastic work, guys. The Wisconsin businesswoman and her late husband, Ken Hendricks, established ABC Supply in 1982. The once-small shingle supply firm has expanded rapidly over the years to become the leading roofing distributor in the United States. Hendricks took over as CEO after her husband passed away in 2007, and she has since directed the company single-handedly, presiding over a series of key acquisitions (such as the 2016 purchase of L&W Supply for $670 million) that have increased revenue from $3 billion when her husband passed away to $9 billion today.

Hendricks has done a lot of different things with her money, including helping the economy of Beloit, Wisconsin (where ABC Supply was founded), funding Hollywood film productions, and donating over a million dollars to Republican organizations. Hendricks, who is 71 years old and has a net worth of $6.8 billion, recently ranked 76th on the annual Forbes 400 list of American billionaires, surpassing Marian Ilitch, a businesswoman from Michigan who had previously held the distinction of richest self-made woman. Hendricks was one of nine girls raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Hendricks told Forbes last year that despite having “a great life, living on the farm,” she always “wanted to wear a suit.”

A few hurdles needed to be cleared before she could proceed. She had a baby and married her “first love” when she was just 17. She told Forbes she almost didn’t finish her final year of high school because she got pregnant. She graduated from high school after completing her coursework at home.

I still had the determination to pursue my goal despite that “Forbes, she revealed.  Hendricks told the New York Times in 2009 that she followed her husband’s employment to Janesville, Wisconsin, where he worked at Parker Pen. She departed after three months to pursue a career in the new-homes sales industry. Soon after that, she committed herself to obtaining her broker’s license through rigorous study.

Hendricks explained that she had to figure out how to provide for herself without help from anyone else when she gave an interview to The New York Times. “I always knew I’d be able to provide for my son. Within a week of turning 21, I filed for divorce.” Roofing contractor Ken Hendricks became her future husband not shortly after she met him, and the couple quickly went into business together. After purchasing and fixing up a hundred houses in Beloit, Wisconsin over the period of three years. In 2007, Hendricks’s spouse tragically lost his life after falling through the roof of their Wisconsin house. He was 66.

It was all we had ever done “In an interview for same paper in 2009, Hendricks made the revelation. For the first year following his passing, I ran the company out of my home, where all of the top staff members came to do business.

After her husband passed away, Hendricks took the company to new heights. Forbes reports that under her leadership, the company’s revenue increased from $3 billion in 2007 to $9 billion in the most recent fiscal year, and she handled the company’s two largest acquisitions in 2010 and 2016. Hendricks told the Times in 2009 that she planned to prioritize “being more judicious about” acquisitions and “capital repairs instead of capital replacements” in the near future.

Hendricks explained that the decision was made to repair the parking lot rather than replace it entirely. As the saying goes, “progress is a lot of easy tiny decisions.” Beloit, Wisconsin, straddles the state line between Wisconsin and Illinois, and its population is 36,966. Hendricks has invested millions of dollars to alter the town’s appearance. The New York Times published a profile of her in 2017 detailing her efforts to attract new business to the city by purchasing a country club, mall, and the city’s historic library, among other properties.

When Hendricks looks at abandoned structures, he sees “an opportunity to put things in them,” as he explained to the New York Times in 2017.

Although Hendricks’ efforts to improve the area have been well received, they have drawn criticism. According to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, a video from 2011 shows Hendricks and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker discussing Walker’s plan to “split and destroy” unions in the state. Additionally, she was criticized after it was revealed in the Journal Sentinel that she had failed to remit any state income taxes for the years 2012–2014. Hendricks and ABC Supply “have paid hundreds of millions of dollars in federal and state income taxes throughout the years in question,” a business spokeswoman told the Associated Press at the time. Hendricks is a major Republican fundraiser who has shown unwavering support for both President Trump and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Bloomberg claims that Hendricks donated a whopping $1 million to the Wisconsin Republican Party and $540,000 to each of Walker’s two gubernatorial campaigns. She was also a Trump supporter and ended up working as an economic consultant for the candidate’s team. Heather McRae, a senior loan officer at Chicago Financial Services, warns that “lender affinity can backfire if you don’t shop around to see if there are lower rates.” And that’s especially true in the competitive modern refinancing market.

Black Knight found that the percentage of retained lenders was at a record low. Of the expected 2.8 million homeowners that refinanced in the fourth quarter of 2020, only 18% stayed with their mortgage servicer (the business that collects your mortgage payment). When it comes time to refinance your mortgage, here are the pros and cons of switching lenders.

In 1975, Ken was a tiling contractor and she was selling custom-built homes. They tied the knot and immediately went into business together. In 1982, the founders of ABC Supply discarded their credit lines in favor of a loan. Confidential ABC Supply supplies roofing, windows, grooves, and siding for business and residential construction.

Diane Hendricks is the holder and chairwoman of the ABC Supply and the keeper of the Hendricks Holding Company. She has also produced a number of films, such as the Iranian rural triumph The Stoning of Soraya M., as well as the critically acclaimed An American Carol (2008) and the critically panned Snow me (2010).
