Abby Lee Miller

As the star of Lifetime’s reality show “Dance Moms,” Abby Lee Miller became notorious for her tirades and rigorous training. She was sentenced to a year and a day in jail in 2017 for, among other things, bankruptcy fraud.

Abby Lee Miller received a passion for dancing from her mother, founded her own group at the age of 14, and opened her own studio in 1980. With the Lifetime show Dance Moms, which chronicled Miller, her pupils, and their diva parents, she became a star in her own right in 2011. Miller’s legal troubles finally caught up with her in 2016. She pleaded guilty to a variety of offences, including bankruptcy fraud, and was sentenced to a year and a day in jail in 2017.

Miller was raised in a dance family, so it’s no wonder that she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Maryen Lorrain, a 50-year member of the Dance Masters of America, led various dance classes before settling down in the Pittsburgh suburbs with George L. Miller. On September 21, 1965, they welcomed their first child.

Miller’s greatest passion was dancing, particularly competitions, however she enjoyed other activities such as Girl Scouts, ski club, clarinet lessons, and charm school. She chose to teach rather than perform since she disliked it. While still a teenager, she started the Abby Lee Dance Company. She founded her own dance studio in 1980.

Miller’s students have gone on to perform in shows like Footloose, Wicked, and The Lion King on Broadway, as well as in Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular. Miller transitioned from being on the sidelines to taking centre stage when Lifetime gave her a reality show called Dance Moms.

Dance Moms premiered on July 13, 2011, and followed a group of young want tobe dancers and their stage moms at Miller’s dance studio. It became a cultural phenomenon, with 2.8 million viewers tuning in for the third season premiere in January 2013. The hit show’s eighth season premiered on June 4, 2019.

Because Miller’s Lifetime show was so popular, the network awarded her another show, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, which premiered on October 9, 2012. Twelve dancers competed for $100,000 and a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School in New York on the show. Along with Robin Antin, the originator of the Pussycat Dolls, and dancer/celebrity choreographer Richard Jackson, Miller served as a judge. The show had a two-season run.

Abby’s Studio Rescue, a follow-up series, featured the no-nonsense dancing coach assisting other studio owners with their failing enterprises. After seven episodes aired in 2014, the show was cancelled due to a lack of interest.

However, Lifetime cancelled the show in June after the parents of two African American Dance Moms participants disclosed Miller’s history of bigotry.

Despite the fact that her reputation as a villain was one of the reasons for Dance Moms’ success, Miller refuses to perceive herself as a villain. In a 2013 interview with In Touch magazine, she explained that while her tactics may appear harsh, they are justified. “I’m kind the first time I tell a child something. After the 15th time, I am irritated. They’re doing 100 push-ups by the 30th time, and I’m shouting at them, and of course, that’s what they show on TV “she stated

Miller departed the show in March 2016 due to mounting legal issues, and was replaced by dancer Cheryl Burke of Dancing with the Stars fame.

Miller was charged with 20 counts of bankruptcy fraud in October 2015. She was accused of hiding more than $750,000 in earnings between 2012 and 2013. She was sentenced to a year and a day in prison in May 2017, as well as a $40,000 fine and two years of probation after her release.
