Anderson Hays Cooper (born June 3, 1967) is an American political pundit and television journalist. Anderson Cooper 360°, a CNN news broadcast, has him as the principal anchor. Cooper works as a correspondent for CBS News’ 60 Minutes in addition to his job at CNN.
Cooper, who was born into a rich Manhattan family, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1989. He began traversing the world as a young journalist, shooting footage of war-torn countries for Channel One News. Cooper was the younger son of novelist Wyatt Emory Cooper and artist, fashion designer, writer, and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, and was born in Manhattan, New York City. He is also descended from Civil War brevet Major General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, who accompanied General William Tecumseh Sherman on his march through Georgia, through his mother. He is a second cousin, once removed, of screenwriter James Vanderbilt through his maternal side.
Cooper worked as an intern at the Central Intelligence Agency for two summers during college while studying political science. He has been a self-described “news junkie since I was in utero” and pursued journalism without a traditional journalism background. He took a year off from reporting after his first correspondence job in the early 1990s and stayed in Vietnam for a year, studying the Vietnamese language at Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
Cooper sought unsuccessfully to get an entry-level job with ABC answering telephones after graduating from Yale. Cooper needed a phoney press pass to get his foot in the door of on-air reporting, so he enlisted the help of a friend to make one. Cooper was working as a fact checker at the time for Channel One, a tiny news organisation that produces a youth-oriented news programme that is transmitted to many junior high and high schools around the country. Cooper then travelled to Myanmar on his own, using a falsified press permit, to meet with students who were protesting the Burmese government. He was eventually able to sell Channel One his home-made news segments.
